I would like to know what level people prefer to play on. I want to know because I am making a single player map(Corruption)and I would like to have some kind of idea of how challenging to make it.
I hope to have the map finsihed within a week or so but I may get behind.
I will probably base my level's difficulty depending on the selection that gets selected the most.
Thanks for responding to this poll.

I often play Starting the game at Medium.. I find it is the most fair and balanced. Then I will go back and try harder difficulties.. its pretty cool in some games because what a level may of been like in the medium setting will be completely different in a harder setting.

I follow the example of Muhnay - medium seems to be the fairest pitch, and it means if I get frustrated/stuck at a hard spot I am more likely to continue knowing that this isn't the toughest difficulty. If such a situation arose playing on hard i'd quit and take some persuasion to return.

It really depends on the game. For single player FPS, I usually do whatever is the most realistic. I can't stand non-id-style FPS games that require 12 hand gun shots to the face to take down an enemy, for example. *cough*BrothersInArms*cough*
Other than that, it really depends on the game. I play on the most enjoyable setting. Which is challenging, but not impossible. I hate games that are just ... absolutely impossible, they really piss me off.
As a result, most games I do on normal, certain FPS' on hard, or "nightmare" type modes, EA FPS' on Easy, because otherwise it takes like three shots from the most powerful weapon to kill the opponent. Call of Duty, is the most realistic on the hardest setting, but the way the game is set up ... it's just crazy hard to do. Rockets kill you in a single hit and they like to have those canyons where there's like four enemies with rocket launchers aimed at you and you really don't have enough time to take them down ... otherwise those games are really fun on that setting.
It's all about balance and the particular game. If the game makes the AI smarter on the harder settings, without messing with how things work in the world it self, I would play on the harder settings.

I usually pick medium, hard if I've already played the game on medium. Since dieing often means reloading and on my system, that means waiting, I'd rather stay alive and watch the scenery, with some occasional challenges thrown in. I quite like tactical fights, rather than frantic run-n-gun shoot-outs. A sort of over-arching 'puzzle' element in combat.

Hey Crono, I like what you had to say.. but let us also add instant head-shots without trying. The current version of CounterStrike drives me nuts on that.. every freaking kill now a days is a head-shot and most of the time the guy is shooting the ground when he gets it. No skill. As a trained marksman, I will tell you that most gun fights happen with in 15 feet, and most of the time no one hits anything... let along a head thats a very small target and goes against most training.. which teaches shooters to go for the center of mass.

I prefer Medium for the realistic things.

I just got done re-playing GRAW2.. and it was a blast. The whole bridge level at the end is rough.. and yeah I understand what your saying about lining up that sniper rifle on yonder hill, and pulling the trigger, seeing the blood spray and then the guy turn look in your direction and flip you off, and start shooting at you.. so you do it again and he shrugs it off.. yeah I dont get a kick out of that either. I have not run into that much though.. most games do pretty well with the headshot = kill formula.

Hardest. It's the only difficulty that matters :o
Online multiplayer is usually about twice as hard as the toughest singleplayer anyway.

I would say medium because it enables you to become familiar with the game without becoming too frustrated.
MEDIUM RULES!
