Wrong thread. And no. There are games other than Half-Life that have modding communities, you know. The Quake 3 mapping community, for example, has a steady hatred of Half-Life mappers.
Hmm, I tried Radiant for a few minutes and gave up. I should really try to pick it up again though...

I don't understand inter-community hatred. What's the point? There are great maps for every game, and a lot of crap maps too.
Even if you hate a particular game *cough*Counter-Strike*cough*, you can still recognise quality mapping for it.

@ campaignjunkie.
The Radiant Editor has quite a lot functions that hammer doesn't have. I admit, it's a hard nut to crack in the beginning, I'm still learning it at the moment, but check out some good tuts about it, you'll learn tons.

Wow, I had absolutely no idea Q3 mappers hate HL mappers...does that mean I have to hate them back?

Explain CJ, or is there no logic behind this hatred?

The Quake 3 goons are probably angry that the game they love is limited to boring arenas, bland textures, dull gameplay and peashooters for weapons. Their hardcore geek stylings mean they cant defect from ID Software, and thus become "The Cult That Vehemently Hates Anything Which Isnt Doom Or Quake."
Or, "TCTVHAWIDOQ!" for short. Further investigation reports that "tctvhawidoq!" means "tosspot/w*nker" in Russian.
So there.

the attitude i sensed with the Q3 scene kept me away from it.
whether its real hatred or not i am unsure, but the elitism is very pronounced.
the architectural ability of Q3 is just as real as HL, i have seen many maps superior to anything HL could achieve, but the problem i saw was, even s**t maps and mappers thought the were someone special, and farther up the ladder compared to any HL made map.
i know my place in the hierarchy of editing, i dislike anyone who doesn't realize theirs.

I've always been tempted to map for Quake3, since I love the gameplay in small games (especially one-on-one). But the gameplay is so fast and unforgiving that there's little room for quirky mapping ideas (eg. traps).
That said, it is precisely this sharpness of gameplay which, as well as limiting the quirkiness of maps, allows for some of the purest flow in any game. Take a look at the classic ZTN3tourney1 ("blood run") for an example of simple, near-perfect flow.

The problem is, as a whole - it's a fairly unremarkable game. Most of the default levels are average, with a few small gems tucked away. The maps lack identity, as do the weapons, the characters, the plot. It has a nice engine and a really good game of Quake 3 is better even than UT, Half-Life, etc etc.
The lack of "grab factor" probably dissuades more of its fans from editing for it, so you are left with the hardcore - and with companies like ID (ie "monolithic" in a sense) the hardcore are going to be more inward looking, fickle and nasty than other hardcore groups around the world
It's sad, but it's the cult of Quake  True geek game icon, and geeks can be very hostile people.

Very lucid points Gwil. I think you're right - Quake3 games can be truly superb, but the whole design of the game means that the maps lack character and ambience. The only way a map can be good for Quake3 is if it has the right hardcore gameflow. You can't make a good map for Quake3 by injecting creative ideas and design. For the most part, fancy design just gets in the way of the fast-paced gameplay.

I remember playing the Q3 demo and finding it really... vanilla. I mean, it has the same guns as DOOM ffs. I don't like the guns, either. Having guns with such a clear power hierarchy is old, and speaks back, again, to a time when multiplayer was just an add-on to 1player games. Where the guns in multi had no balance and were just the 1player guns you normally slowly acquired during the game. Even then I liked UT much more- the guns were more inventive and balanced, and even had secondary fires. And the maps were gorgeous and location based, rather than just being brown-colored generic arenas.
That being said, I can see why people like Q3- it is classic deathmatch perfected, you know? I was never that crazy about that kind of DM, though.

Fortunately in Quake3, the guns don't have a clear power hierarchy. In Quake2, there were only 3 useful weapons. In Quake3, every weapon has a use. It's not just a case of grab the rail and rocket. Frequently the machinegun - your starter weapon - is the most deadly choice. If I'm doing well on a tourney map I seek out machinegun ammo
The weapon balance is sublime, except for the daft BFG.

I'm with dietz as well. Quake 3 is a quality game... I think it's main problem now is that if you are a n00b going into it and playing online, you won't be able to kill anybody and will get bored really fast. Even if you can do most of the game on nightmare, the online players will destroy you. This contrasts with a game like CS where even a beginner can get a couple of kills, and may be on the team that sometimes wins, so it's a lot less frustrating.

But Q3A does have teamplay in it, if you locate one of the CTF of Team Deathmatch servers... or if you play Team Arena. Anyone can defend with a shotgun, plus it's loads of fun to get awards in the game for that sort of thing ("DEFENSE! HUMILIATION!")
Radiant is neat, I'm just starting with it but I kinda like the idea of using a brush for everything (even selecting objects!) What this program really needs is mouse gestures, a la Mentor Graphics, that let you work really fast. I guess you can add plugins, it might be worthwhile to search for one...?
