My buddy has 3.5 as do i, and when he places a spawn point, a model shows up instead of the 2d image. This is not so for me, can anyone help me out? Is this a user set property? If so, how do i set it?

1) Make sure you're using the correct 3.5 FGD of whatever modification you're mapping for.
2) Unpack all models (.mdls) you want viewable in-editor from the .pak archive, using PakExplorer, PakScape, Half-Life Model Viewer, or whatever Pak tool you want to use. If your mod doesn't have a .pak file and all the models are already in the \\models\\ folder for your MOD, skip to Step 3.
3) Go to Tools >> Options >> Game Configurations. Configure the correct file paths for the game configuration for you to use. For example:
Mod Directory: (any modification)
C:\\Sierra\\Half-Life\\ns
Game Directory: (usually valve... I think.)
C:\\Sierra\\Half-Life\\valve
4) Enjoy! Remember that if you load another map that has models after/with another map with models, the skins/textures of the models in the other map will be corrupted. Just restart VHE if you want correct skins for the models. Also remember that changing the in-editor sequence won't change the actual animation in-game! Also remember to distribute the models with your map!

ok, step 2 is throwing me off.. where do we put the models? in the valve models folder, or the half-life one?
and if we place a player start, it will look like one of the player models?

It makes sense that it would look in the \\models directory of both mod directories listed in step 3 (\\valve and \\ns in this case)

Well Raid3n happens to be at my place, but I'll still put this up...just make sure you're either using the DoD (or respective mod...if updated enough) FGD that is either included in the Mod directory, or an updated one from their official forums. Should help out.

Use a pak explorer and copy/paste all models in the pak.0 into your valve/models folder.
Do that, and even the weapon models will be viewable in the camera mode of Hammer. Handy for placement.
This works for deathmatch. No new .fgd needed.

I have the whole damn pak file expanded on my HD and it doesn't work...

But it's a clip artist's best friend...hopefully it'll support the multiple bodies some day too.

I remember seeing the code that you had to put in the mod .fgd so that viewing models in hammer was possible. Try looking around Valve ERC for it, or for an updated TFC .fgd whichever is necessary.

As Gorb said, the code was given on how to make an entity display as a model. So its possible to make your own fgd that shows any model for any entity...nice if you can be bothered coding it. Therefore its quite likely that even if valve haven't made a TFC fgd to show models, somebody else has, and it might be worth searching for one popular mapping forums / google.

Technically ANY mod can support models in the 3D view, all it needs is some tweaking to its FGD. I haven't a clue if it has been updated, as I don't map for CS, but check out popular CS forums or whatnot and ask there, people might have a better idea.

You pretty much just have to add some sort of "studio()" property to the entities in the FGD I think, and specify an optional model along with sequence names. Look on Collective for some actual documentation.

have you tried placing the models in the tfc/models dir instead of the valve/models folder? just a hunch
