Hmm, I don't know if I would, I'd be more likely to resort to far more inflammatory words  But out of those, perhaps prick is slightly more insulting...but its a really close call.
This calls for a wacky poll!

hmmm, you guys should truly lose the penis portion of your comparison..

1) the penis is only annoying to a lesbian so its not a good analogy.

2) think about exactly why you called that someone a prick... what were they doing, and what emotion did they provoke.. in most cases its extreme annoyance, i have yet to call someone a prick, and a penis be the desired mental image

3) twat is a mild insult, but definitely a stronger one than prick... as it insults your manliness, where prick only reminds you that you are being annoying and should really consider growing up in many cases.

4) polls about cusswords are useless, as with this example.. there are to many conflicting definitions..

5) a dictionary of sorts would be preferable.. that way when i use prick you don't look stupid by getting mad, or i will know that its not a preferable word to use to a Brit and i avoid looking stupid.

Orph, the 'strength' of the word you use depends on personal opinions, and to be frank I don't really care about which person finds what words offensive. The point is the context you use it in; when you have called me a prick in the past it was in an attack on me, quite unlike my use of a similar word with A_S as you can see he had not annoyed me and it was out of jest. Anyway site bugs/suggestions please, if you want to carry this on start a new topic or I'll just delete replys.

tis exactly why you keep screwing it up.. its the user, not the recipients opinion as to how the word was intended..but its funny, you don't care if it involves you.. but be that as it may.. point taken this is a suggestion thread.. suggestions for the site, not your ability to differentiate, which i suppose would be a waste of all our time..

If A_S has a problem with me using a word in jest to him then he can complain to me himself, he doesn't need you to do it for me. The point was Orph that you've used such words in an attack on me and my integrity in the past, which is an entirely different thing.

I have a suggestion for people giving suggestions.

Wouldn't it be easier (for Lep) to make changes if people took some effort and gave an algorithm for something that they'd want to see on the site?

And I don't mean for simple stuff like "stop skipping white space" and junk. I mean like if someone wants a new feature added in. (I think Jeff in the GM thread asked if you could make it detect st and nd and rd when using numbers and changing their size.) something like that, it would be pretty simple to make this stuff happen if they wrote some sort of processing algorithm for the functionality.

And algorithms are rather easy to write as well. They requrie only the knowledge of computer logic (if, else, and, or, so on). And if need be there's an abundant amount of resources online. Also, writing these algorithms takes no prior knowledge of the actual code in the site. Hell, you can work psuedo code into the algorithm (you can use standards like PDL, which is just plain english on what should happen and where).

Its just a thought.

OK then, before a post is echo'd on forums.php:

$post_body = str_replace ('1^st','1<sup>st</sup>',$post_body);

etc. I'm sure Lep is very good at all this stuff by now though? I would imagine a possible implementation of most suggestions jumps into his head as soon as he reads it.

They jump into mine as well ... php isn't the most complicated thing

But, I wasn't singling you out, just using you as an example.
My suggestion is really for more complex things, then string replacements.

Crono, that's a good suggestion, but the problem is that usually when I can't work out how to implement something then the person suggesting it isn't really going to be able to write a PDL algorithm  Do you have a particular thing/addition in mind?

The only thing I'd like is for the link styles to pertain to an entire thread and not just a specific link. But that would require some backend work, and throw out the whole relying on browser cache thing. So, no not really  .

I'm implimenting (in a team) a library site for my software class. This stuff is tedious, like, the code its self is cake, but the documentation we have to write is nuts! On monday we turned in our design document. 104 Pages! FOR A WEB SITE! (who said engineers can't write? )

But, if I ever had any suggestions for some major site add ons I would most definatly write it up in some sort of pdl/php/psuedocode form.

...as in clicking a page number of a thread doesn't change the threads links (from the board view) to 'visited'.

However, as I said, this can't be done without either a) changing the page script to a function, passing in which page they wish to view (then the browser cache would take care of the rest) or b) setting it up in the backend.

Does that make sense or should I elaborate?

I don't know of a way to change the colour of the 'main' link, only the page number. PHP can't access your browser history, so it's all CSS and whatnot related, and if you come across a way to do it (apart from changing the page number styles..) please let me know.

And Reno, what country are you in, why are you up at 5/6am?!

Nope, not really

However, I just thought of a rather small functionality that would be nice.

A "pm all" option in the private message area would be nice. Not sure how you store the usernames (according to table set up and such), so, I can't give you an algorithm :\

I see your point.

What about this then.

How about taking away the 'edit' option in the editing forum if you have a correctly marked answer?

I mean, if it's correct, you wouldn't want them going through and just deleting their message

In any case, anything I could think of (at the moment) would pertain to minor details about the site. Overall, its very well made. ... However, I haven't 'tested' your input buffers :dodgy:

Today is the last day or term and I was writing a report for a last piece of coursework....exceptionally slowly  I figured I'd be better off persevering and finishing it before going to sleep, incase I slept in as usual! Though to be honest, I'm normally not in bed until 3am or something these days anyway, my sleeping pattern has been knocked out of sync lately.

pfft, no stamina from these students... my impressive feat wasn't academic, it was my "24 hour charity pool marathon!", down at the local pub...

the frightening thing was, after drinking/playing pool and darts for 24 hours, we stopped for 5 more hours and played more darts. drank some more too!

THATS STAMINA, KIDS!

Why bother using a </cool> tag if you didn't start off with one in the first place..?

Anyway, just messed around with screenshot uploading code. It should now be a bit better with the file sizes but I haven't tested it- as ever let me know if it goes a bit funky.

24 hour skateboarding / rollerblading - THAT is stamina. Great laugh too - hitting the streets and all the hills at top speed at 4am, in a huge pack of over 20 skaters (the young uns had mostly hit the sack by this time, the youth of today!) is one of the most enjoyable things I've done in the past few years.

Thought up another 'feature' that would be nice.

It'd be cool if you could select in your control panel area which measurements you'd want to see (English or Metric).

And then create some standard for identifying them in messages and convert accordingly  .

(I'll write an algorithm later, pretty busy with 'elib' at the moment :\)

If it makes any consilation ... I'm working on the ratio between real world and HL1/Hammer units (I'm getting close).

And I don't care if anyone thinks "it can't be done" or something like that. Because that's nonsense.

But, that'd be a cool conversion feature ... pointless, but cool.

However, Reno, there's nothing wrong with most everything on this site. So, all you can give are small feature considerations. Secondly, the point is. its used. And I've seen more measurements on this site more times then I've seen the terms "2nd" and "3rd", and Jeff wanted those to be altered.

In any case its a suggestion, not a demand. It would just be a nice feature.

The 2nd thing is parsed when you make a new post, unlike a measurement converter which would happen on the fly... could do I guess, but meh, not fussed, everyone should be working in metric

Obviously.

That's fine if you don't do it, I really don't care, I just said it would be a cool feature.

on a side note, I found the conversion units
I'll write up some little php converter sometime ... with an option between inches and meters.

Check out wil5on's new map, I posted a comment and it turned out like this on the post:
"2nd to last pic is a little strange with the sky, and some of the polies are a bit high in a few places (but you could probably solve that), other than that the map looks like a HLDM, I just dont know about the "gimmick" part."

Yeah I must admit I quite often check up on people's profiles to keep an eye on new comments from people and the like - it would be nice if I were just told when any were made. Rather than get spammed it could just be something like if that person's profile has changed at all in a day, you get a PM telling you, regardless of how big/small the change(s) was.

How about this: instead of telling you what changed today, it notifies you of the first new thing, then if there are more between this first new event and you going to the profile, it doesn't tell you, because you will see when you go there. That way you get a maximum of one notification per profile (even if there are additions/changed in subsequant days). The other way is just as good, I jsut thought this way might be easier to implement somehow.

The easiest way to do it would just to list the items you're watching and the date they were last updated/changed; something like moddb's system would be fun but it's a bit over the top for a simple profile/map. I'll get onto it and all the other stuff in a few weeks after my finals :leper:

When you click on 'new maps' on the front page, it would be more appropriate if it automatically went to the page where the maps are arranged by date rather than the alphabetical list.

Two ideas stolen from other forums:

A 'quick reply' box at the bottom of a thread page (non-java reply from within the thread).

Better integration of 'who's online?' by having a horizontal list of users viewing the current forum/thread at the top of the page (in the case of this forum, below the forum/thread title).

Quick reply is a good idea, although when I use them I always write too much for it to cope and I just get taken to the main reply page with my message wiped

Just added a map watch system, it's pretty lame right now but if ideas sprout up it can be changed/made spinkier. Visit a (beta) map and click 'watch map', and it'll be listed on the sidebar in your control panel.

Pretty cool. Quick reply would be great too.
