Nintendo 64

Did anyone own this console ? I picked up 3 new games for this today for ?15. wetrix, mario cart ( :smile: ), and f-zero-x.

Classic games.. does anyone have any old consoles they still play on ?

I've got a playstation (counts as old now, right?), a megadrive (genesis), and a master system 2. The master system 2 doesn't have a card slot, but I got an adapter to play master system games on the megadrive.. it looks like this when plugged in:

I don't play on the consoles though - I normally turn to emulators for my retro gaming fix. This works out better than you might expect, as I got a playstation pad > USB converter that works well with emulators, and graphics for playstation games are better on the emulators than they are on the playstation.

N64 emulators seem to be pretty lame though. I was considering getting an N64 just for f-zero because it is so dam cool, but then I realised I wouldn't actually use it.

I still play all of them. I'm soon to be an owner of the NES themed Gameboy SP (put off buying a gameboy since they came out, my luck that the nostalgia version comes out when I've got money :biggrin: )

i've got an old megadrive that sometimes get dug out for a few rounds of golf.

hmmm, /me ponders a futuristic golf style map with hl2's gravity gun. :biggrin:

I went through an emulation phase where I got a load of games I used to
play as a young lad. Sonic, street fighter, road rash and the like. I
still remember getting my first sega on my birthday and thinking it was
the best thing ever. :smile:

F-Zero X is one of my all-time favorites. You should see the Gamecube version.

I was a big fan of the original F-Zero for Super Nintendo. Nothing like racing thru fire field with your last car and its about to explode...

I've been a PC guy the whole way along.. searches in basement for the 386 I've never owned a console of any sort.

N64... ahh those were the days. I'd have friends over and play Goldeneye.

Ahhhhhh the master system, those were the days, and SJ, the master system 2 i have does have a card slot :razz: and alex the kid built in :razz: I used to have a n64 and a playstation, golden eye!!!! A bunch of my frineds would come round and bring there pads to play a bit o' golden eye.

Damn that was so cool, I did exactly the same. You completly dont get the atmosphere of 4 zitty teenagers huddeling around a small tv, squiting at their part of the split screen, and giving each other dead arms, when you blew them to shreds with proximity mines :biggrin:

Zelda 64 - oot. That stands today to be the best game I have ever playied.

The Master System was so cool. I loved playing Jurassic Park on that thing.

The master system pad... who designed that thing!? Who wanted a pad with corners?

with the advent of the console, also came the ailment known as "Nintendo Thumb".. an experience i care to never experience again..

console games do not appeal to me, but i have many here ATM that my kids play.

Your kids still play the Nintendo? I hope to show my kids the classics some day but I don't know if I could get them to sit still long enough for FF3...

I don't think they'd appreciate them to be honest Horn, sad as it is. We're geting old. :wink:

Its not mine, but there is an N64 in my flat, and other for old school
consoles we have a playstation (since the N64 seems to count), 2 Megadrives
(my flatmate is "upgrading" one over summer), and once another flatmate
brings them up, a SNES and a NES. None of those consoles get much play
though, when we first got them up it was cool for some nostalgia, but I
feel newer games and consoles have the edge.

How old are you guys then ? aherm. I'll still be playing games as I get older. I proberbly play old games more than new games now I come to think of it. Opposing Force has some fantastic playability.. and as for red alert... jeeze. Did anyone ever play that ? The amount of units you could build was only limited by you're processor, and the amount of time you had. A lot of games, especailly c+c generals, miss out that factor. More games are being made for money, where a lot started off as being made for fun.

I'm 19, turning 20 next month. I've been gaming since the Commodore 64,
through an Amiga 500+, to a playstation and other more recent consoles.
To me, playing some games of Burnout 2, or a few team battles with a
mate on Soul Calibur 2, is far more enjoyable than a bout of Road Rash.
I probably enjoyed Road Rash more when it was newly out, but playing it
now it really pales in comparison to modern equivelants (NOT modern
Road Rash games however :biggrin: ).

I'm 18, started playing games when I was 4. Grew up with them, Final Fantasy I taught me to read. I thought I'd grow out of it, but it's starting to turn into a career and I have no intention of stopping.

Commodore 64 was kickass. Demon Stalkers was the best. I have a PC version of that game on my computer now, and I still play it.

I had a commadore 64. Totaly cool. The games loaded off tapes, I remember going to have a shower, while waiting 20 minute for the game to load.

Gradius was the s**t, baby!

One of my friends at school must have had like... every megadrive game. It was ridiculous. OK maybe not every, but a good 50 games.

I've got pretty much every American released console since 1985 (except 32X, Virtual Boy, and XBOX ... and I don't want any of them).

The 64 was an alright system, it had its games. But if you really look at it, it failed miserably.
I think the reason why that is, is that before its release, games weren't really looked at as a serious industry and by the time the 64 came out video games were known to the general public as 'Nintendo'.

They had no where to go but down. However, I think it's funny how everyone forgets all the crappy games on the NES and SNES. It just seemed like no one was really paying attention until the 64 came out and by that time their game quality went down.
Thankfully the current president of Nintendo is getting it back to what made the company one of the best, good games, fun times, and wonderful experiences. :smile:

Anyway:
NES, GBC, SNES, N64, GC, GBA, GENESIS, SATURN, DREAMCAST, PSX, PS2, and Computers of course.

I'm almost 16, but I've always been a bit behind the times. The first "modern" FPS I played (i.e. one where you could jump) was HL, and I got that in 2002.

Wow Crono, I didn't realise you are such a console fan. Surely if you
like console gaming, at least some of the games on the Xbox must
appeal? I won't try and reiterate our previous argument over hardware :smile:

I also owned an Atari 800. Well, my dad did. That machine taught me BASIC programming, and I used that up until we got the mighty 386 in around 1992 or 1993. WINDOWS 3.0 AND DOS 5.0 BABY!

I really dont feel attracted to consoles.

Good. Consoles are not objects of sexual desire. There are probably a few websites though...

I've never played any off the games played on lets say...the spectrum or commadore 64 or the sinclair [mainly coz i wasn't born when the sinclair arrived] But luckily for me, there are emulators! Like the snes one i use to play mario kart and mario allstars and world.

I've 17 nintendo 64 games. I intend to buy more games for the nintendo 64. They could be valuable one day..

Had over 100 games for the commadore 64, not to forget the severall few I wrote in BASIC :smile:

Nintendo seem to realease games for little kiddies, the scariest one I ever saw was shaddowman. * yawn *. I would like to see nintendo move to the pc market.

I'm a lot like crono in my tastes for consoles and such. Although I was never a big Sega fan (Although I do enjoy the Saturn and Dreamcast.)

As for age, I'm 18 and my birthday is at the beginning of the year. I'm graduating from high school in a week.

Reno, I love consoles. There's something about having a specially made computer for playing video games :smile:

I don't want an Xbox because I already have a computer (at least other consoles have specialized hardware which is made for gameplaying, and not using the inefficient X86 arch). There are a couple of games that look alright, but they'll be on PC soon enough. And I have a PS2 controller hooked up, so it'll be fun then.

I just don't think the Xbox is a good investment for gamming. However, if you're like Stanford, you'll buy 1500 Xboxes to make a supercomputer because it's cheaper.

I'm a big Sega fan, actually, I love their hardware. Their games are great as well. I just see them as the only true console company, to be honest. They've managed to take a beating over the years and dip their fingers into other, new, areas without losing what makes them great.

I think it's the same reason why I love the Game Cube so much. It's made for gamers.

The reason why most people don't like Sega is because of the Genesis. And granted it was a pretty crappy console. It was mostly western hemisphere. They discontinued it in Japan rather early and came out with the MSX (which Metal Gear 2 is on by the way). And that system is bad ass. Think of a pre-generation Saturn with lower stats and a cartridge system.

I think if certain pieces of hardware became cheaper in a few years they would be great assets to the gamming industry.

Such as, think of how bad ass it would be if Flash Memory was drastically cheaper. We're talking games the physical size of GameBoy games that can hold 10 gigs and up, not to mention, a battery isn't needed to save information. Also, vital data doesn't need to be written to memory since it is already stored in memory. Video information is another question. It would allow for better game performance and seamless transitions. However, Nintendo has done a very good job with transitioning on their 1^st party games, future events get taken off the DVD while you're playing, so they're ready when you need them.

If you want to label any company "the de facto" console maker, it should be Nintendo.. they did after all invent the control pad, the control stick, vibrating pads blah blah...

Basically they are the genius and leader, followed by Sega who lost out due to bad marketing, bad pad design and media malignment. Sony are just an electronics company tbh, a populist option. Still, they do have some good points on their consoles.
