hmm... I liked the original film, then watched the frist series or two, and lost interest. It seemed to be one of those series where it's too wrapped up in trying to have story lines that are 'clever'... or something, I dunno.

I can't stand the series. One thing that annoys me is that almost everytime I've tuned in to watch it (with the vain conclusion that I might actually like it), all of these alien worlds look just like the great American wilderness. There's always slight variations, but come on! I want interesting alien worlds! I'm not going to bother ranting about this again, I've done it on so many forums I've lost count. The only drama to come out of the US that I've liked in recent years is 24, and that's it.

I liked that original movie. I decided not to watch the series tho, I was pretty sure it'd be bad, and might even ruin the movie for me were I to watch it again.

tell you what, watch season 7 then decide.
if you are of the opinion its poor without seeing it, or from the 1st 2 seasons, you are cheating yourself.
this series, could replace my trek favoritism ... its that good.
its on par at least with babylon 5

Replace trek?????? (gasp!, choke!,babble!). I have seen a relatively good few episodes . I kinda like the series even. MacGuyver in space!. But I would say it runs a definite 3rd place behind Trek, and Babylon 5.

I really hope season 8 is great because 7 was such a huge letdown... I'm still not sure about Stargate Atlantis yet. And as for replacing Star Trek...that's stretching it quite a bit.

I tried to watch Stargate, but it's banality hurt my brain. It was even more mediocre than Enterprise, and that takes some doing. And I'm not going to settle for watching their lame-ass 'mainstream' sci-fi show after they were stupid enough to cancel Farscape.

i am just so glad that its ok to disagree.. i saw farscape.. but honestly very few of them so i am essentially on hold for an opinion.. but enterprise, and SG-1 are just so good IMO it goes beyond normal.
someday, i would like to compare lists in order of what everyone considers quality T.V.
it always struck me odd that here at the pit, i am always on the wrong side of a program, but around hereat home.. i am main stream in thinking.
truth be told.. many love SG-1, but some are still iffy on Enterprise, but few have watched all 3 seasons like me.

Well, with most really good shows, all one has to do is see one episode before deciding it's good.
BTW, I thought the original movie was pretty stupid. But I haven't seen the series, and have no plans on watching it anytime soon. I like my television watching to be guaranteed quality!
Anyway, as for lists of shows I watch... well, okay, I don't watch much TV.
-South Park
That's right, I only watch one show on a regular basis. That and CNN make up my total TV watching world. And occasionally Forensic Files on Court TV, but only when I'm really bored.

It's a shame how sucky some TV sci-fi can be, and how it gives books a bad image/stigma :/

I watched the show once and never again. However, I talked to my friend about it just to get the good details about the overal plotline, which is actually good .... just poorly executed.

Stargate did suck when it was starting out, but after series 5 it's f**king awesome. Each series has gotton better (series 7 has fewer awesome episodes than the other seasons, but the good episodes are the best things i've seen on TV ever). Series 1-3 were piles of cheesy crap, series 4 was a transition (they finally started rolling out the P90's - YAY), series 5 is excellent. Series 6 is ok, but Jonas never really fitted in as well as Daniel, series 7 is meh but when it's good it's absolutely drop-dead gorgeous.
I'm personally sick of the people who see one episode from series 1 or whatever (such as that stupid one that's always on about the tribe who opress women, including carter) and call the whole thing crap. I'd love to shove the series 7 openers and the finale. If they had the budget to make the action scenes in the series 7 finale a bit longer, it'd have been on-par with Independence day. Pity they wiped out Anubis in such a crap way, but meh.
Unfortunately, series 8's looking pretty pants.
EDIT:: Oh look... they even have one of those "Someone's trapped in the Holo deck and the safety controls are offline!" episodes.

My housemates ex girlfreind watched independance day, and at the end seriously asked 'did that really happen?'
It was an OK film I thought, plenty of good mindless blowing up and stuff, but it falls into the same old 'world threat... america saves everyone', 'everyone' being a few steroetyped nations (typically england, russia, and 'somewhere in asia') that didn't have any idea of what to do by themselves. Very cheesy as well. But I don't think anybody would say independance day is a thinking mans or good plot film - you have to judge films by what they set out to do, and in this respect, I think you would have to say independance day does pretty well.

Yes, because I know Roland Emmerich always plans on making a piece of crap from the getgo, I mean look at "Godzilla" [1998].

No, he plans on making a big action film with some cool looking sequences. It just happens that you don't like a film where this is the only aim. You must admit he suceeded in some respect, as it was a big blockbuster film. At least admit that the film wasn't a failure in that particular aim.

I already said he succeded in making a piece of crap :\
And, there are mindless actions movies I like ... Die Hard, Ronin, Bullet, and Last Man Standing all kicked ass.
It really has to do with the people in it and the way things are shot and such.

T'pol in the decon room. Yaaaah. I shook her hand at Paramount. She was having a ciggy outside the stage. What a babesky!!!!!!
Seriously though. My big gripe with Enterprise is the writing. Gene Roddenberry tapped a wide pool of talented sci-fi writers and used their stories in a star trek context many times. That, plus the original stories had merrit of their own.He also did this with TNG(can you say "Fist full of Datas?, 10101?, . The latest regime(Piller,Braga) have no concept of good story writing. The fact that they stumbled across the last season scenario has not changed the fact that the franchise is all but dead to Paramount. Poor movies, lackluster ratings all around. It's a shame really. Now remember I am a huge ST fan. I can only hope that by some stroke of sheer luck they figure out a way to save the series. I doubt it though. Word from my Paramount buddies is that we will get one more season of Trek to assure the syndication scenario, then they are gone.

My point was to show that if you don't like a type of film, you won't like films made by him that are of that type. If you can come up with a film you like that is actually the same type of film as these, then you will have made a valid retort. Missing my point on purpose doesn't count

I haven't seen either of those crono so I don't know  I'm pretty sure resident evil is going for a different audience than godzilla and independance day though. I'm not going to make another post about this... you must know what I mean. You even said you don't like armageddon, a film that fits with the other two, and this would seem to prove the point I am making, which is that you just don't like that type of film.
I think it is good to be able to see that not everything you personally don't like is a completely awful waste of space in every respect.

Man, I was kidding. I don't care if someone like Armageddon.
But, you also never really said what 'type' of movie you were talking about. I mean saying it's a movie like ID4 or Godzilla, doesn't mean anything, because it can be taken in whatever way with respect to what the person reading it though of the movie.
Anyway, it's not a big deal. There are mindless pointless movies I enjoy. It's just those 4 popular ones are terribly painful to watch.

Bullet is not mindless, its a classic.. the camera work and shots used
were pioneering - it defines the ultimate car chase/car movie scenes in
the same way (if not more so) as The Italian Job did  certainly not
mindless, more like essential viewing..
Ronin is terrible - the camera work is closed in and horrible, the plot
is thin and the stars cannot save this turd of a move. I've seen it
twice and I can't remember the details too well, which just screams
"CRAPOLA!" to me, tbh... action movie or not, it was a waste of good
actors in a cliched, boring plot. as an action film it doesnt work
either, its just middle of the road rubbish..
sorry, had to vent my feelings on ronin there
Die Hard i certainly agree with you on, shame about the 2 films
afterward.. Die Harder was boring and forgettable, and Die Hard 3
suffered from BIG NAMES TO COVER BORING PLOT syndrome. still good as
light hearted entertainment though, I guess.

Bah, as a Deep Space Nine bigot, I have to throw my two strips of latinum in here. DS9 for the acting, the political intruige, the "SPAEC BATTALS" (as my friends call them - they loop them daily..), and the excellent story arc - nearly all scifi series now are self-contained episodes, and each ep hardly affects the rest of the series. Ever heard of the Star Trek Reset Button? Series like Voyager abused it way too much.

Aye out of the different STs I have to admit that DS9's the best. Stargate builds a lot on what makes DS9 good. The space battles in Stargate are only just beginning to happen (we only got our own cruiser in series 6 dammit) but the gun fights are the best. The acting, for the most part, is fantastic. The writing could be better, but at times is almost as witty as Friends
The reference to independence day and stargate comes from the big dogfight at the end of Series 7. Full out invasion of Earth, with Goa'uld fighters/bombers trying to take out this ship that SG1 are in (long story as to why), and Prometheus (our cruiser) turns up with a full wing of fighter escorts. The opening double episode of season 7 also had a Star Wars style fight, with O'Neil and Carter doing a bombing run on Anubis's mothership. Pure action goodness.
And how many TV series have you seen that use bullet time amazingly? Have a good watch of 'The Warrior' in series 5. Lovely alien Kung-Fu in bullet time

Word of warning, SG-1 kinda blows after Season 8. I thought Atlantis was better overall. Universe is worth watching. As soon as it picked up the show that they canceled all other Stargate shows to make got canned. (Bastards)

I lost interest after he left.

Stargate was really good. What I liked about it was that it showed present day fire power against aliens and the weapons actually did some damage to the aliens for once, unlike in countless movies were our weapons don't do anything. I also really liked the idea of finding the Stargate and then interfacing it with human technology, everytime it opened it was cool how they had soldiers with god knows how many weapons poised to blow whatever came through to smithereens if need be.
I felt that when the hippy woman came along (can't remember her name) it got really cheesey and unrealistic, it stopped feeling as 'military' as it used to, it seemed like they had just given up trying to make it realistic. That was really something I didn't like, that woman was not military trained or anything, she had come from another planet for christs' sake, yet she was operating with a crack team of soldiers. Oh yeah and who can forget Teal'c!? He was a class act, really loved everything he stood for, a really really good character. So yeah, I liked everything apart from the last two seasons where that hippy woman ruined everything.
