No need for the rant sloth. it sounds to me like the authorities are siding with you...
It is all rather silly IMO, but manhunt also sounds perfectly loathsome. Obviously I'm not against killing in video games, but the ones (like GTA) that are focused on aimless atrocities rather than mission based shooters (CS, HL, DOOM... etc.) seem quite repulsive.

I think that she is getting to me!
It's just that she's putting the risk of me not playing doom3 because she can't see past the fact that the person who killed her son is a psycho. Any normal 17 year old would know that putting a crowbar in the back of someones head is wrong.

This debate has been going on for quite some time and I only expect it to get worse as technology gets better. Personally I think violent video games are merely a symptom, not the cause of such behavior.

Depictions of violence should be outlawed. Games featuring the use of weapons should be banned. Everything on television except for commercials and shoppping channels should be completely censored out. Movies which are any more gory or gruesome than Walt Disney's Bambi should be prosecuted, and even thinking 'mean' thoughts should be a crime.
Every copy of Manhunt should be hunted down and shredded with the knife that was used to kill that boy.
Only then will we all be safe.

Numerous cases like this pop up every year where there's a barrage of
media bulls**t. 'PLAYSTATION2 MURDERED MY BABY' is a pretty juicy
headline. Once all the dust settles and everyone stops crying, video
games stay voilent. The BBC wrote a much better article than the
tabloid junk I read in work last night.
As a sidehunt, manhunt is an absolutely terrible game. Maybe the
parents should have noticed there was something wrong with their son
when he seemed to enjoy it.

Heh, I did my final dissertation on violence in computer games for my degree  I kind of came to the conclusion that there was rarely any middle-ground between opinions. Either people wanted them banned, or available to everyone 'cos we all know games aren't real. Doesn't change the fact that some people are more open to the 'power of suggestion' than others.
I personally think that the age ratings should be better enforced - not particularly because kids will copy violent acts from the game (there's no real proof of this), but because the content can be quite mature in some cases. It more or less works for films/movies, so it really should work for games too.
now where did I leave my crossbow

Not really, I think that more ties in to peoples inherent fear and
misunderstanding of technology tbh KingNic. Anything people are
ignorant to they will either flee, or attack. It's pretty much works
the same as racism, homophobia et al. It's just people are so morally
aloof nowadays they are becoming isolationists more and more
(particuarly when we have politicians condoning this behaviour)
I totally agree that the parents should have been doing a better job,
the irony struck me when the mother said "the boys played the game for
hours".. Heh, and she didn't notice that this boy was slightly tapped -
but then, she wouldnt.
Television and video games are the third parent - they're like bad fathers which don't go to the appeal court.
I'm afraid we are in no position to start debates on video game
violence and the pros/cons, when children as young as 3 are bombared
with advertising by the "eternal box", then as they get older
(programming aimed at 10/11 year old girls) tries to turn them into sex
symbols. Just like the popstars waving their crotches in front of the
camera or saying what theyre going to do to a girl when they get her
home, this is all just part of the standardisation, isolation and moral
degradation of a self centred society unwilling to let the blame fall
at its own door.
And yes, I accused other people of being morally aloof, and it looks
like i'm being so here - my point is that people are too often morally
aloof yet misguided at the same time.

I just thourght ah good old rockstar back on the news again cos someones trying to ban another one of there games.
I do think that the game is rarther stupid cos its just pointless
killing but when your really pissed off that kind of game can help you
vent off some anger but when people like to imatate it then I think
that they have had to be mentaly disturbed in the first place.
But what you gunna do us loly gamers carnt do much against some greaving and angry mother.
But what gets me is that most of these kids that are playing these
games arnt supposed to have it anyway which I think is bad parenting cos
there is a bright red circle on the disk that clearly says 18 over here
and the kid was what 17? or was he younger I carnt remember now but I
know he wasn't 18 or older.

I should have known the game was British. No American game would ever decide that having a Ball Room in a mansion is more important than a Bedroom or Bathroom.

thats the same as cluedo, you get weapons (lead piping, rope etc) and the characters - Reverend Green, Colonel Mustard etc..
i think it started out as a british game (judging by the characters and
the fact its set in a stately home/mansion), and has been bastardised
to "Clue" for the more simple audience, America

They called it Clue because 2 syllables is too much for the average yankee
Its like the way they removed the letter U from Favour and humour... crazy ass yanks.
On the topic of yanks, did you know the word yankee orginally comes from the name John Cheese.

I was going to post something about how Manhunt is an absolutely atrocious game to begin with and children shouldn't be playing it, but I don't remember exactly what I was going to say. All I can think of now is "wtf is a cluedo."
