Make a brush that you want your ladder to be. Cover it in a ladder texture. Press the 'to entity' button and make it a func_wall. Change the rendermode to solid and the fx amount to 255 this will make the blue segments transparent.

Now create another identical brush in front of the ladder and cover it with the aaatrigger texture. Press the 'to entity' button and select func_ladder. This is the actual bit you climb, the other bit is only for show. Make this func_ladder entity 2-4 units thick (decrease the grid size in Hammer by pressing [).

Hope it helps.

(edited for a bit more clarity and whatnot- Lep.)

paint skillz. (solid = func_wall, entity = func_ladder) You don't see
the purple one in-game. This is a rope, but the technique is the same.

I'm wondering, why do you have to a the aaatrigger texture to triggers? I found that they work fine with any texture.

the :aaatrigger: texture is only a reference for the mapper, so he can more easily spot things that arent simply world brushes.

(heh heh, I got to use a new smiley)

Actually, make certain triggers out of a different texture instead of aaa like the original game, and it makes it easier to group them on screen

Thats made out of a func_door_rotating
Place a brush covered in the origin texture where the doors hinges are (The centre of the origin brush becomes the pivot/hinge), and select that and the door and make it an entity (ctrl+T) and for the most part, that should work correctly. You'll have to fool around with the properties to get different effects though

By the way, i can't seem to make the right ladder. It looks exactly like the solid i made except for the texture. It is not connected to the wall.

Um... right

Make sure that the func_wall entity that is the visual ladder has a render mode of 'Solid' and FX amount of (EDIT: 255) to make the blue parts invisible

Maybe you should take a screenshot as your descriptions are hazy at best.

Are you trying to have the ladder embedded in the wall?

You'll have to cut a little alcove for it using the clip tool (Press ctrl+X to switch clip tool modes so both sides of the cut are white highlighted)
One you make the alcove, just texture the visible side with a ladder texture and put the func_Ladder up against it

Do you mean something like this ? This way the ladder will be climbable even when you approach it from the side.

No, they want it embedded into the wall it is on. so

Wall|....Ladder...|wall
......|Func ladder|

Ho ho! Eat my crappy text images and implement multiple spacing!

he means there is a recess into the wall in which the ladder sits. So
think of the letter C bing the wall, and inside the C is the
ladder. So if you try to approach it by the side you only hit walls.

the ladder should be flat against the wall (Like, 1 unit thick), with a slightly thicker (2 units against the wall) func ladder. You've got a big square physical ladder with no wall behind it.

Perhaps the beginner tutorials at twhl are more suited for you.

Go here, and read each of the In The Beginning tutorials and follow along with them.

Also, Egir.dk has various beginner tutorials (Don't foget to join the forum)

i think i know whats happening here.

Irenicis' pic shows a big square (form above) ladder, made with the default snap on grid size. the func ladder in front of it will be made with the same size of brush, making him climb the invisible ladder, 64 units away from the visible one. or "before he gets to it".

so his question should have been (if i'm right), how do you change the grid size in hammer?

the [ key makes the grid smaller, for making thin things, like ladders.

the ] key makes it bigger, which is better for big main walls etc.

and in the bottom right side of hammer, it tells you how many units the grid size is at.
