Recently watched

I generally don't like British films as most of them fall under either the romatic comedy (almost always starring Hugh Grant), or the typical laaandan gangster drivel. Occasionally, the odd film will appear like Dog Soldiers, 28 Days and Shaun Of The Dead and break the mould. Don't know whether this is down to smaller budgets and having to appeal to the mainstream to recuperate expendeture, but it is a shame there aren't more films with a bit of an edge to them. :sad:

Watched 'The Warriors' last night and it was really good. No reliance of super-duper special effects. Simple plot premise with lots of characterisation (you really root for the protagonists...even if they're not exactly on the right side of the law). Locations were all captured well on film and I reckon it still stands up to more modern films.

I'm also looking forward to seeing how 'Rockstar' turn it into a game. I can see great potential but at the same time they could easily fluff it up and turn it into a second outing for 'Manhunt' which was quite average.

Memento's cool. I liked the whole backwards story thing it had.

Collateral is a great film; love the club shooting scene and the darkness to it. I thought the very ending was a bit unlikely, but it makes sense if you think about it..!

Bagged me the first season of Millenium today so that'll keep me busy for a few weeks :smile: I kinda lost touch with the series after season 1 as British TV has a habit of fluffling up the schedules and it ended up being shown at something ridiculous like 3am.

Second season is out soon so I thought i'd better bring myself back up to speed!

I'm surprised to see that I made not comment on Collateral throughout the course of this thread. Really great movie, definitely one of my favorites from the summer. Favorite non-comedy easily and I've found myself recommending it to everyone.

Another thing I feel like mentioning is the local newspaper film critic seemed to really let loose with his standards this summer. There were far too many four star reviews. It seemed like every other movie that wasn't intrinsically terrible got a four star. The summer movies weren't that good.

IMHO No it won't, it's ok, but nout special.

I saw Shaun of the Dead tonight. Whoever thinks this movie isn't good is a moron. There, I said it.

This is by far one of the best zombie movies ever. And No, I don't count Romero's movies, since they suck ass. I mean, granted he made up the whole flesh eating thing, those movies are really bad.

Shaun of the Dead gives a complete, hysterical, situation of what someone would probably really do if Zombies started walking the Earth.

Past the story (which has no bulls**t, its pretty linear and straight forward, which is perfect for this movie), The one thing that really stood out was the makeup and special effects (not the CG kind). If someone got their stomach ripped open, it looked real (for the most part). If someone got shot, it looked real. Overall, everything looked amazing. This is one of the only movies that had really good gore effects. And its well fitting for a zombie ... comedy.

I strongly suggest seeing it.

matt, i've not seen calendar girls, but i know it's about some old ladies who get there tits out. so maybe going to the pictures with your mum wasn't the best way to watch this one.

i only mentioned them both, cause they are about really old people, doing youngish things is all.. anyone could/should enjoy both flicks.. 5 star material IMO.. i don't personally think either movie can only be enjoyed by old people.

I just finished watching the new dawn of the dead, it's a great re-make, the special effects on the zombies are great.

Dawn of the Dead remake is awesome too.

Doubtful. Taking that HL really doesn't have all that great of a story. Its great for a video game, but I don't think it could carry a movie really well. Of course, I'm talking about it couldn't be a respectable movie on its own. It would be a fanboy movie, and a lot of people hate those kinds of movies.
There's really never been a game based movie that was a wonderful movie on its own.

Now, I like Resident Evil and Mortal Kombat as much as the next person, but they're not stand alone good movies.

I think HL would be treated the same way. The only way it could be made really well is if the story was completly readapted with the same characters and a bit more complexity. Because if they did a really good conspiracty theory thing in the movie it would be pretty good ... if done properly. But it would be really easy to screw up a HL movie.

Secondly, it'd be retarded if it was called Half-Life ... I'm sorry, it doesn't fit outside of the game setting.

re-watched the rings movies.. they moved up a notch or two, but still not as good as everyone makes them out to be..

Watched City of God for the second time the other night, very long and
meandering but great nonetheless. Never seen a film quite like it
before, and it has a greatly effective soundtrack. Subtitles will put a
lot of people off but its a cool movie.

Also saw Shaun of the Dead at long bloody last, and it was, as
expected, pretty damn hilarious. I thought it was getting progressively
worse from the start, but as it began so well I was still enjoying it
come the end :smile:

For any fans of Asian cinema, check out "Zatoichi" starring, and
directed by, one of Japan's finest - Beat Takashi. Its a remake of
sorts, as the main character is kind of legendary in Japan with many
old films about him. Its bloody and violent, but also funny and
interesting, well worth checking out.

I'm addicted to Reservoir Dogs. I've watched it about 5 times over the last 3 days. And it's still damn good stuff.

reservoir dogs is the same old boring comedy/violence dark slant that
tarantino that does well, but not brilliantly - and usually in the same
old, tired cliched format. funny at first, tragic afterwards, imo at
least. i will say now im not a tarantino like 99% of the populous UK
and USA, and the world :razz:

city of god however is teh win - perfect example of how societies
values, morals and misguided approached to development distort the most
vulnerable - children, into drug taking killing machines :/

overall a sad, but powerful commentary on how western politics has
shaped south america into the mess it has become today. really good
film, definately worth a watch :smile:

Dammit, Shaun of the Dead is great. I love that movie.

I'm a young filmmaker, so people automatically call me artsy. Though I didn't want to, I almost started to believe them. This movie has redefined artsy.

Actually, that movie is more or less a Charlie Kaufman concoction, Spike Jones just adds to the mix. I mean, Kaufman is a wonderful screenwriter, but he comes up with some funky ideas: Being John Malkovich, Adaptation for examples.

crono, i don't think they could add enough movie to make the trilogy truly great, i'm sorry, but LOTR just wasn't classic movie material.. good? you bet, but not great.. it'll never be up there with other trilogies such as the first 3 star wars (4,5 and 6), or the god father.

there are much better authors than tolkien to have made a movie out of their books..

people..please don't turn this into some novella about how the ring movies and god father are not the same.. i just had a hard time coming up with some great trilogies at 12:45 am :rolleyes:

Erm, The Godfather trillogy isn't that good, its way over rated.

The amount of footage isn't what is important, its the way its cut. Seriously, you can make over 20 different movies from one movie depending on how you cut it.

The Extended Editions blow away the theatrical versions, I'm probably unrating them in all honesty.

By the way, the new cuts of Star Wars are so much better as a whole then the original cuts. But they are actually greatly different.

i am old, i may see the godfather slightly askew, remember.. i saw it when it was released, and at that time, it was the scariest movie i ever saw.. i had nightmares for a very long time.. something about watching them at the drive in theater i guess .shrugs

But, seriously, the dvd version is really well done, pretty much all the changes he made (as blasphomus as some geeks might say) were incredibly good decisions.

Now if he would just re-edit Phantom Menace and just replace anakin with another kid actor.

Also, Godfather ... SCARY?? Are you scared easily or something? I had an idea your stance on those trillogies 'greatness' was related to nostalgia or something as such.

A New Hope is just a good movie; it doesn't spend much time explaining the minutia of the world it introduces the audience to - the downfall of most science fiction - but rather ends up using the fantasy element solely for the purpose of allowing the characters to do things that a realistic setting would never allow.

The rest of Star Wars sucks.

if they edit out the bad portions of 1 and 2, i am afraid they would be left.. with a 3 foot pile of tape at their feet and some previews of another truly great movie only on the tape..

if part 3 doesn't do something spectacular, the movie will go down as the worse prequel in history to follow a legendary concept as 4,5 and 6

Back to the Future (I despise the 3rd movie though)
Robocop (3 sucked balls)
Terminator (3 has NO GOOD story arcs)
The Man With No Name Trilogy (Sort of a trilogy, sort of not)
Hannibal Lector Trilogy (Again, they ruined Hannibal. a.k.a 3rd movie)
And I'm fairly sure Blade: Trinity will rock (completing the Blade trilogy).

On a complete side note, does anyone else think ?Saw? looks awesome ... in a twisted sort of way?

Yes, I was serious: A Fist Full of Dollars, A Few Dollars More, and The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly.

Also, I'm going tonight to see a showing of "Team America: World Police", should be a nice Puppet Satire.

So, I saw Team America tonight. I don't think I've ever laughed so much at any movie as I did for this. Oh man. You don't have to see it, in fact I don't suggest it, since most people will think it's a waste of time, but if you're into good satiric comedies mixed with lots of parodies, this is for you.

Yeah, well, my point was the only ones in that series that were anything close to good were 1 and 2. 3 blew ass. 4 was ... BLAM! blows brains out

The one thing I consistently hated in all of them was Gene Hackman being Lex Luther. I mean, yeah, Hackman is great, but, Lex isn't a curly haired assclown. He's a well calculating business man.

Orph, my "bad" list could put you in the hospital for a month under mental disorder. It's much easier to list the good ones, it's a far shorter list.

By the way, The Butterfly Effect sucks donkey nuts. It has three things going against it: Ashton Kutchor <- s**tty person/actor, s**tty plot <- s**tty person main character, Bulls**t theory. Why is it, if he effects things when he goes back the only people effected are the people he directly knows, which are the same people every time. Prying on the Chaos theory wasn't a smart move in that aspect, because the very name of the movie is the concept that if you change one thing EVERYTHING else changes, I mean s**t, that's like the tag line for the movie. And that never happens. EVER. They made it out such that there was 1 and only course of action, with minor diverted paths every once in awhile.

But, that's my opinion ... on the facts.
Not to mention Ethan Suplee is the coolest guy in the movie ... yet his role sucks larva sacks.

Goddammit, I hate that movie.

By the way, I bought ?Jurassic Park? (ONE) and ?The Ring? today. Go Best Buy Bargain Bin!

I still want to see what all the extra mumbo jumbo on the Memento "collectors" DVD is.

Also, when I was at Best Buy today, I noticed, it would be cheaper to buy each Alien movie individually (2004 editions), then to buy the Quadrillogy ... by 3 dollars. The only thing the Quadrillogy has that those don't is a disc about the Quadrillogy, but I think that the trade off is good, since buying them seperatly won't result in opening a 5 foot dvd case to get to the last disc. (MAJOR design flaw).

just re-watched "Clan of the cave bear" now that i am old enough to appreciate the movie, i actually liked it.. the first time was not as enjoyable.

I saw Casablanca a couple weeks ago as a movies assignment.

It was good, but, why in God's name did people call it a musical??

never was a bogey fan, but when he teamed up with hepburn in "African Queen" i will watch that movie every time i can :smile:
