I will probably be buying it as soon as I can. I want to reserve a CD-Key before the asshat kiddies that think they are hackers make CD key generators and ruin the multiplayer experience.

The only thing that blows about this whole 'multi-release' deal is that people who like buying physical retail copies of games are getting a bit screwed. Why is it if I but the collectors edition of HL2 in stores I don't get a hat, posters, or cd? I mean, I understand they're trying to slam Vivendi, but Jesus.

I wonder if they would pay for somebody from europe to go to Valve if they were one of the 'one in 5000'? Not that I would ever buy the 'gold' version. I'm definately interested in DoD:Source, but I can't see myself paying $20 for a port of a game that used to be free, and another port of a game I already have... I'm guessing it will be possible to buy these later if they turn out to be worth it?
I think the only version of HL2 I am likely to buy is the version on one DVD.

It will only be on DVD. HL2 isn't going to come out on CD's.

Why would anyone want to put games on CDs these days, especially if you need six of them?
Methinks Valve is indulging in some artificial brand-tiering. HL2 hat and t-shirt! Gold, silver and bronze! Honestly
It's crap like this that means I can't get a Mini One with a white roof - I'd need to buy a Mini Cooper. But ooooh, the Cooper comes with chrome grill bars too instead of matt black!

Whats funny is it costs $30 US more for a bunch of propoganda posters and clothes.
And if Valve wants to screw Vivendi really bad, they should just release Half-Life 2 onto Steam now.

We very rarely get any of the special offers over here in the UK. More likely we'll just get one standard retail version.

I wouldn't think it will be any different actually - UT2004 and Halo 2
both have special editions as well as normal editions in he UK so I
imagine its equally possible for HL2. And as Steam isn't region
specific all three offers will probably be applicable everywhere.

Heh...UT2004 had a special version? All I saw in the shops was the DVD version in a standard DVD case, and the 600 CD version in a card box the size of a DVD case (but a bit thicker).
I know there were special versions in other countries with the tutorials and I think some places had microphone headset thingies too.

I'm just hoping they release the retail boxes at the same time everywhere. Or at least don't delay it for too long. I can't download it on Steam, so I hope they don't make it such that I can't get the retail version on time.

Perhaps you needed to mail order the special edition, but I'm fairly certain it made it out in the UK.
My HL2 is now preloaded (did it overnight), so fingers crossed I should be good to go on CS:S tonight

First impressions are 50-50 to me. The visuals are impressive in places
and poor in others, though I am playing on a DX8 card (GF4ti). The
weapon models are nice and sound effects are great for the most part.
Characters also seemed nice, particularly the way they are animated.
Watching your team mates run around is a nice sight
I do have a horrible problem in that it doesn't seem to precache the
sound effects, and this results in a horrible jerk of lag at the first
time each sound is played in the map. Also, I'm not hugely impressed by
the way you are pushed away from objects when you run into them. The
fact my flat network is currently down also means I have only played
online for one solitary round. I killed a team mate accidentally and
the round was over. Then I got disconnected. Damn

What's this? You mean the Half-Life2 audio won't be cdaudio based like HL1?

No.
Several reasons:
1. Its potentially a DVD
2. Which CD IF ANY are needed for music? Most games after 1998 install EVERYTHING to the HDD, this is why you can crack the game and still have music (Yes, I crack my games, putting the cd in every time is incredibly annoying)
3. If you're planning on playing online, you're going to load it through Steam. This means that all the sounds are encrypted.
Even if you found the sounds somewhere I doubt they'll be in wav format or something as such. They'll probably be some format that is encoded with a codec made for the HL2 engine (like most games).
Does that answer your question?

Office, Aztec and Dust are f**king beautiful maps. The rest are ok but
could definately use some lighting and texture reworks, and Havana is
just plain awful.

Just played quite a few of the maps on a 46 person server, and it made
CS so much more fun than usual. The visual effects and sound effects
just make it such an involving experience. Sat in the market in Italy
with 8 team mates, chunks of wood flaking around you, bananas and
melons flying past your head, ears ringing from the grenade that went
off nearby...bliss
Here is the IP of the server, I recommend it to anyone wanting to see just how much fun CS:S can be...

Im not a fan of CS, but OMG this game is beautiful (in a non-homo kinda way), the enviorments are lush with detail, the archetecture is detailed, the physics make the game fun and "realistic", and ive only played aztec and italy so far. HL2 is going to be great, it must be nearly complete if they are releasing its multiplayer already!!!!!

It is complete ... the release candidate went out weeks ago ... its up to Vivendi now ... (a.k.a. good f**king luck.)
I think CS:S really loses its shock effect after a couple rounds. I mean, the eye candy only distracts you for so long, then you remember that it's CS.

While it is still the same old CS, there is something about the added
visual effects that makes it seem that much more intense and enjoyable.
Sat next to the broken bridge at the courtyard in Chateau while bullets
spray up the water just beyond you really makes you think "oh crap!". I
really hope people start large scale 16 or more a side clan matches,
would be great fun, as that is when CS:S is at its best I'd say.

Eye-candy can distract some people forever. I still love TS for its sexy-smooth animations, though of course the good gameplay's a plus. With a game like CS: S, the effect should also be lasting just 'cause it seems more "real" then with stuff blowing up everywhere.

I agree you with you on that one Hugh, realism is essential in making a map last. An ugly map thats plays awesome won't get played nearly as much as a map that looks as well as plays awesome. With the release of HL2 all my mapping dreams will come true. Realism, aahhhhhhhh......

I don't actually have a DVD drive, but I'm really just waiting for an
excuse to get one. At the moment I've no need for one, but I accept the
fact that eventually I will, and when that day comes I'll bite the
bullet and get one.

You can get a 16x DVD-Rom for $25. A DVD/CDRW for about $50 and a DVD-RW for about $80. If you're looking for a CD-Rom you could probably get a fast one for like $15.
At least here, where I live. And no, I'm not talking about going to Best Buy or Circuit City. Try to find a OEM computer hardware store around you.
But, yeah, I don't own a DVD rom either. I'm waiting until I can get money to finish building this other computer, then I plan on getting a dvd burner. I don't want to waste 30 of that 90 (or so) amount getting something I'll have later.
