Cool. He's a great guitarist that can't sing for crap (and that's even compared to a screeching Billy Corgan) so I'm glad he's not drifting back into a piss-poor solo career.

I was just thinking, what makes you a fan of a band/artist? How many of thier gigs you have been to, how many of thier albums you have? Or just that you like thier music a lot.

Well, technically, 'Fan' is short for Fanatic, which would almost imply that the first 2 were correct. Remember, a part of fanaticism is an element of unreasoned enthusiasm. So, just showing up at some concert 'just because' would make you a fan in the literal sense.

Yeah, a fan usually implies you like their music though.. for instance,
i've seen The Cooper Temple Clause 3 times, as I cited (perhaps this
inspired $loths post?) - but I wouldnt class myself as being massively
enthusiastic for them - it just so happens I've seen them once where it
was their gig, and the other two times they were on the
Reading/Glastonbury '03 lineups.

Also theres a lot to be said for people who like and follow a
band/artist, but are willing to hold back on buying all the albums.

I like a lot of artists, but I don't like ALL their material. That would just be silly.

Just listened to 3 songs from a band called Burning Mona. Oghr over at 69th Vlatitude is part of this band. They did their first interview at a small radio station and they haven't done any tours but if you listen to their music you'd think it was a bid name band. They are great and you really should listen to the stuff they have.

Just got The Eighties Matchbox B-Line Disaster's new album, "The Royal
Society". Puts pretty much all rock albums released post-millenium to
shame. Voodoo/stoner/desert rock, with a touch of pure punk adrenaline.
I remember seeing the description "some seriously heavy voodoo s**t"
somewhere, which is pretty much spot on. If you like anything involving
Queens Of The Stone Age, The Birthday Party (hell, Nick Cave in
general), The Stooges, The Stone Roses, Captain Beefheart...hell, if
you're into rock music, pick it up. This is miles away from their insane, zombie-fueled debut album.

I'm all spent up for this month but I intend to pick up a copy as soon as I can :smile: I got their first album which is really good.

The 3 singles don't really do the album justice IMO. :smile:

The new Big D and the Kids Table album "How It Goes" has been
released...in the US only :sad: Importing it seems to not only cost quite
a lot, but take 4-6 weeks! Looks like I'll just have to wait it out for a UK release.

I'm listening to a lot of Beulah (good indie rock) and Blutengel (goth techno?). I think I like every Blutengel CD, though Angel Dust probably has most of my favorites and it's like 80 minutes so wahoo to that, eh lads?

Oh yeah, and Wir Sind Helden - Die Reklamation is an excellent CD, probably German pop... but not poppy to the extent of Britney Spears and the like, since this is actually listenable.

Band Aid 20 - Do they know its Christmas?

When it was first played on Radio One, Colin Murray in the afternoon asked people to text in what they thought. Mostly rubbish. He perservered, suggesting:

You should try and guess who is singing this makes it fun. It doesn't.

The original wasn't good either, but people bought it. Yes it was. It had actual artists, not 'pop stars the rivals' type flash-in-the-pan idiots.

One person texted that they sound like a bunch of kids. His response was that this is good, do you remember that song grandad? I do, it had Jones out of Dads Army.

Finally, you should buy it since you'd probably give it to a busker on the way to work anyway. Yes, yes I would. Provided he wasn't singing that, or gag doing the 'rap' bit in the middle. In this case I would call the police.

Its a charity single, and since I bought the Live Aid DVD set the other week, I may as well buy this crap too. For charity. Because it is Christmas. Then burn it. Burn it to the ground and salt the earth.

WHY DIDN'T THEY JUST RERELEASE THE ORIGINAL, OR SING THE ORIGINAL VERSION??

I'm sure the only reason half these 'artists' do charity records is to make themselves feel less guilty because they earn unreasonably large amounts of money.

Instead of getting us to buy their godawful rendition, why don't they just donate some money themselves and save us the trouble? :wink:

I agree, the new version is lifeless and crap. Chris Martin (Coldplay) starts off well- we all know he does a lot for charities, anyway- and there are a couple of decent singers in there too, but otherwise:

• It it boring and flat. Getting the Sugababes and Dido to "sing" in it with their dull voices (sounds more like moaning) makes it more so.
• It is a vehicle for Bono, who is only big because he's been around for so long, and not due to talent. Justin Hawkins would have been a much better choice to sing the main lines (to go with the mini-guitar-solo)
• Dizee Rascal should be shot.

And, guess what, this isn't just bashing because it's "treading on sacred ground", I don't really know the original version that well. Simple fact is, this version is dire, though I'd rather blame the producers for not making it sound lively enough, and for having a "rap" and people who can't sing in it.

The big question is....do they even celebrate Christmas? :biggrin:

No, I think being known as the little rapper who destroyed Christmas is quite enough. Surely any 'respect' or 'cool' this guy had have been blasted away by that god aweful rap.

I've a funny feeling that after Christmas the only place this record will get serious airplay will be in Abu-Gharib detention centre. 24 hours. On full blast. It'll replace Sesame street and Barney the Dinosaur on their playlists for sure! :biggrin:

Just picked up Fear Factory's "Soul of a New Machine", and was better
than I expected. Not as consistently brilliant as Demanufacture or
Archetype, but better than Digimortal at least. It's listenable. :smile:
Scapegoat, Self Immolation, and W.O.E. are the best songs if anyone is
interested in checking it out.

i don't think any of the three "recently.." threads will die, or be locked simply because they were resurrected. they have purpose, and as long as they stay semi-true.

Been listening to new bowling for soup album, tis good like the others. Also the first good charlotte album, I think their latest one is crap.

I've been listening to Monster Magnet's 'Monolithic Baby!' a lot recently, and also a smidgen of 'The Dirty Americans'.

Have had to cut down on buying CDs this month due to other responsibilities (Xmas pressies!). :smile:

NHOI's [never heard of it] second album is quite good, I got it when I went to see them earlier this year and have only started to listen to it again now, quite addictive stuff.

GREEN DAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Been listening to their new album since it came
out, still my favorite, especially "Jesus Of Suburbia". I really must
suggest this album for anyone who remotely likes rock.

I feel so geezerly. I bought my first movie soundtrack a few weeks back. And not one of those "pop hits with tenuous relationship to the movie" soundtracks either, one of the ones that tries to recreate the movie's emotional flow in music. And it's damn good too.

I also feel like I set myself up so that I couldn't transition into naming the album very well. It was the soundtrack to Collateral and quite a nice piece of work.

Yay, it's back, I didn't want to be the one to do it. Anyway.

I've got 3 of Dover's CDs now, all good, though their CDs get progressively shorter (like The Flame is only 29 minutes long) but it's still all good songs so I don't mind.

And eh, as for bands the rest of you might actually know... hrmm. Well, Radiohead's always good, just got a few of their songs I didn't know were good before, namely I Might Be Wrong and Indian Rubber.

"You tumble like a clown before you burn in Hell" or something like that. Doesn't have to make sense to sound good, that's what I say.

Turn The Page was the best cover IMO.

Whiskey In The Jar was a cover of a Thin Lizzy song, which in turn was an adaptation of a traditional folk song. All versions are just as good as each other.

Astronomy was a Blue Oyster Cult song and both versions are good though I prefer the original to the Metallica adaptation. You must have heard of Blue Oyster Cult though - they're the band that did 'Don't Fear The Reaper'. Another classic :smile:

Also, i'm listening to King's X at the moment. Anyone else into them at all, or is that just me?
