Zoo officials claimed Chen would have been more seriously hurt had the lions not been fed earlier in the day.

Its not true Frag - it was divine protection when he started to pray, he would never have come to further harm after that point!

Sounds like he was trying something related to an old bible story -- I don't remember exactly what happened, but I believe someone was thrown into a lion's den  and God sent His angels down to keep the jaws of the lions closed. So in a sense, they did nothing.

Trying to play "chicken on the rail road tracks" with God is never a good idea though

You'd think if it were possible to convert lions to Christianity,
someone would have figured it out when the Romans were persecuting the early Christian church by
throwing them to the lions. Of course, the man was a fool. Lions are
innately bhuddist, and they may have only 'attacked' the man while
trying to convey this fact.

It was the prayer that probably saved him. Maybe not by devine intervention, but by standing still and becoming less threatening by folding his arms. Most animals are easier to approach if they can't see a couple of snakes hanging from your shoulders.

Blue, no angels to hold the lions jaws closed. The story goes, that Androclese (sp?) met a lion with a big thorn in its paw, and he helped it. Later, when the romans threw him to the lions, it was the same animal he had helped, and it remembered him, and didn't hurt him.

Bare in mind, you might be a different religion that what I am -- Catholic. I'm pretty sure the story went somewhat like how I said it, but I also don't remember a lot of it. X_x

I think you might be talking about something else... unless it's a variation? (is it?)

In the Old Testament, Daniel was thrown into a den of lions and was saved through his faith. Two different stories, both involving lions. Only the Daniel story is considered canon though, as the Bible was a done deal by the time Nero started bringing the circus to town.
