Just had my first quick game of gmdm2 this evening, as kindly hosted by Azelito and organised by KoRn. Thanks to them and r00ts who also turned up.
It was great fun, and apart from KoRn's horrible lag when the boulder approached - he's on 56k - there were no real technical problems. It appears that this map works okay online.
I had an absolute blast, as the map seems to work just as I had intended. It was really quite a surreal experience for me, and I'm not alone. Someone (r00ts I think) described it as "the work of a mad scientist". I don't think I can better that description. There was so much going on and so much to mess about with.
Even with only 4 players it wasn't too quiet. There was plenty of shotgun combat of course, but also good moments of just about everything else (including the Xbow. I sniped and was sniped). Plus lots and lots of satchelling.
Probably my favourite moment was when Azelito managed to use one of my own doors to trap me. I only survived because I'm battery-hoarding scum; it was a simple but very effective use of the map features to gain an advantage, even over its author

The one thing you should do, before downloading Steam, is copy all your HL resources somewhere. Alternatively, just don't tell Steam to delete the old copy of HL.
Steam is great. Honestly

Well, I rather like it
Yes, the fact it squirrels away your HL resources into cache files is annoying as hell. Yes, the fact that you can't play a LAN without being online is stupid.
But I like the rest of it.
I suppose it wouldn't seem so good to me if I had to get it on 56k though, or if it had actually screwed up a LAN for me :/

Hmm looks like I'd have to uninstall a few things then. My HD has about 1G left and HL is about 2G
One more thing - can you still play on WON servers with steam?

I wouldn't mind joining for a round sometime.
and Aze, you can have both WON and Steam running on your computer, they don't interact, but you can still have both (I personally do  )

Umm, you might have a problem since it needs to run under its own mod. If you copy it over to pure HLDM, the boulder won't work, the doors won't work and so the connectivity will suck.
However, you are very welcome to play it in any way you want  I strongly recommend playing it under the Gmdm2 mod., but it's up to you.
Of course, if you could run the Gmdm2 mod. regularly on a server somehow, I would probably worship you

you might as well start at the top
gollums map is the biggest news around here in a long time, IMO it even overshadows the recent competition that just finished...
if you could run a dedicated server for this mod, "I" would worship you as well..

hehe yes im aware of this... nobody ever plays on my dmc server, so i'll just stick the gollum mod on it. Though... only people from snarkpit would frequent it! Nobody has ever heard of the 'gollum' mod.. heh. This makes getting a full game close to impossible. Though, just say the word, and i'll set it up.

Dude, thats a local IP (192.168.xxx.xxx) are always LAN based. You need to find out your internet IP, as it were. Theres an easy way, which I've forgot...
Anyone care to fill this knowledge void?

ipconfig will give your locap network ip not your global ip. To get your global ip just google "whats my ip" or somesuch, and websites will tell you what ip requested the page (you, unless your behind a proxy).

Gollum. I haven't downloaded the map yet but I WILL in the next few days. The ingame shots looked awesome but the thing that really struck me was the hammer shots. just the 2d wireframe of the whole map looked so intricate and complicated that my jaw literally dropped. Even though I have never played it, I can just tell by the hammer shot that it's going to be the best map I'll ever play...

Me and some #valveerc people play it a bit each day; some really great fun. We only have about 3 players altogether, and since the map is quite big, it takes a while to find each other. Satchels seem to be the dominant weapon in this map, which is needless to say... "Different". It's great setting up traps with satchels, and crowbars are pretty useful in close-quarters as well. I love it. You really need to make another map.

Cool  Maybe KoRn, myself, Crackerjack, Orph etc. could join together with your group to make a fuller game at some point.
Maaaybe I'll make another map. It's certainly nice to have encouragement

Mm, played with about 5 #valveerc players on a DSL server. Pretty smooth usually with pings in the ~150 range. No one really seems to go for the RPG since the corridors are so tight; satchels/shotgun are pretty much exclusively used. And when someone does go for the RPG, they're usually satcheled or something anyways.

If you grab the RPG, get the LJ too and stay up at the top of the level; descending into the lower corridors makes the weapon....well, useless.

It's possible (unlikely, but possible) that there is a problem in the released version of the client dll. If so, I have a fix for that

Another one I had too look up. very few people of my age have larger vocabularies than me (although I can not spell any of it). it's always nice to run into someone who can better me verbaly and thereby grow my own ability.
Orph - must you always go there?
