Very good looking, I can tell this mod will actually come out, merely
because its got everyone so far: Programers modelers, texture artists,
etc. you know, not just a team composed of mappers galore.

They even have voice actors. They don't sound like they're professional actors, since they have gaming aliases. But at least the voice over isn't provided by the mappers.
It's an exciting time to be alive, and even more so if you have a nice gaming machine.

What did you guys think of the maps in the media section?
Personally, I thought it wasn't bad, but definitely nothing took my
breath away or made me look twice to see how it was done. In
fact, most of the screenshots made me a little queasy, because of the
light color choices and the lack of light variation. And if any
of their mappers frequent this site: no offense, just giving out my
honest opinion.

All this mod talk reminds me... Who would be up for making a mod here in the snarkpit? The first I propose should be just simple HL1DM for HL2. I'd love to see a return, and I think it won't be too complex at all to produce. We can even have a mapping contest with the theme as "remake of an old HL1 level". We could make the mod in no time- I know theres several coders and modellers here amongst us, and everyone maps!

they could use some more talented level desingers by the looks of the media section in my opinion, but these are probarbly just early screenshots.
seems like a cool mod.

looks very good but what id really want to see is a mod (or even an expansion from valve) about the seven hour war and how the combine invaded
all the confusion at that time that humanity must have been feeling would give a great atmosphere i think plus id love to see the black ops put in somewhere

Hahah that's awesome, you learn something new (and useless) everyday.
And all this time I thought "chum toad" was something sven-viking came up with for the first sven-coop.

Exactly- we should rebuild those days, then make it quite admin based too- you could hybrid HL2DM and HL1DM together- have sprint mode and long jump

Someone's already done a pretty faithful conversion of stalkyard.

It's for some strange mod though... seems kind of weird.

i have played that map for hl2dm, and the gameplay sucks (my opinion),
maybe it was because we were only 6 players or something like that, and
the admins were cheating >:E

If you could rip the models from HL Source, it would be very little work, apart from the mapping. I've coded a mod that replaces all the weapons in HL1, it wasnt particularly challenging.

I ripped the models from CS, the mod was just HL1 but with CS weapons replacing the normal ones. I could probably do the same thing for source with HL1 weapons, but I'd need to obtain c++ .net somehow...

"This map was ahead of its time."
I'm afraid I have to disagree here. Eden was a very pretty map, and Peter Manson definately has skills, but his maps were IMO pretty much eye candy. I've been playing this game since it first hit the shelves, and can definately attest for the 'playability' of HL maps - Eden wasn't even on my list.

IMO, by definition, eye candy means excellent brushwork. I said it was ahead of its time because of its architecture. Maps that were a lot harder to make THEN than they are now. And I dunno of any other outdoor maps like that that had such beautiul arcs and low r_speeds and overall design and feel like that one.
Eye candy indeed, it was a work of art.

True, eye candy is a neccessary ingredient of a great map - but even more important than looks (in my book at least), is playability.
Nailing all of the catagories will take a map to the stratosphere - it will look great, play great, and be accepted by the highest ranks of hardcore players - the people who understand the mechanics of the game through and through.
Mansons maps came very close, but in the end, never reached that highest peak of playability. Not trying to knock the guy too hard, I really admire his vision and imagination. It just kinda sticks in my craw when I hear stuff like that, because, In my own mapping I will quickly lose glitter over playability and those sacrifices just aren't recognized as easily.
Another example of this is the HL2 map dm_depot. I saw on the steam forums that this map was featured in a major gaming magazine - touted 'the best user made map yet'. The map is beautiful and definately has great atmosphere, but far from the best user made map. Oh well, for me, the real reward is seeing one of my maps accepted into tourneys and such. If the hardcore players buy it - you've done something right.
rant off

Speaking of maps, I really don't like the way Rogue Threat's maps look.
They are SO dark that you think that the devs intentionally want to
hide something. The ugly brushwork, perhaps? Usually, people post
screenshots of what they consider to be the best of their work. If
that's their best...

I'm the one who mapped that subway level they have in the media
section. It was the first map I ever made, so the criticism is well
taken, the constructive ones anyways. As darkness goes, I can see
detail on those shots just fine. Your monitor might have a low
brightness setting. I'm not trying to cover up brushwork, I spent a ton
of time with geometry in that map. I would post the bsp, but the admin
for the mod would probably not like that, so send me a PM if you want
it. The subway section had somewhat yellow lighting throughout to give
it a moody atmosphere, and I didn't get any complaints about it until
now. The sewer section was really a rush-job and I'm surprised they
released it as media, and the green lighting is admittedly overboard, I
just tried to make some creepy atmosphere. As far as it being the best
mapping work, it's actually the only stuff we have so far. That brings
me to this:
When the mod first came out, we requested dev members and got a flood
of applicants. Since then at least half have become inactive or dropped
out. I love the mapping that comes out here at Snarkpit, so is anybody
here willing to contribute? You can work as much or as little as you
want.

"This map was ahead of its time."
I will maintain that Eden is trash until the day I die. How such blocky terrain, complete with overscaled textures and sparse mockeries of foliage - not to mention blocky brushwork in general - can be considered in any way appealing is just beyond me.
If Eden was ahead of its time, then I don't ever want to see the maps that came before it.

I just joined up with the rogue threat team, as a mapper. hope this mod dosn't go the way of so many others...
I've been on so many MOD teams that simply just stop. It would be nice to get something done.
