If any of you want to watch a ~50 second clip of HDR lighting at
work click on that. It's that new movie that's been released on
fileplanet and some other filesites.

What did you guys think?

My computer isn't anywhere near the requirements for the Lost Coast, so it was kind of nice to see what I'll be missing.

checkin it out now

edit:

Nothing special...more like high dynamic-range reflection. My favorite part is where the spidery crab walks behind the stained glass :facelick:

Well, CJ, it looks like Valve's taken the trouble of converting Persian Letters for you.

The second half of the video looks like Myst.

Haha reflection. Yeah I know what you mean. I really
expected it to be like a boring techdemo, but then I noticed the poison
crabs wandering around, which made me happy for some strange reason.

I don't know if that's a shorter video or something, but I was
expecting to see a scene were someone walks indoors after being in the
bright sun, and they have to wait for their eyes to adjust to the
darkness. That was something they mentioned in the articles but I
didn't really see in the video (unless... well what was that part with
the boats about?).

The part that confuses me is at the start with the sun reflecting in the water, and then it gets dimmer... Does hdr allow dynamic enviroment lighting? I'm thinking more likely it was an illusion but it looks awfully good at that.

B-but... It's not... Persian-y enough! Yes, that's it!... cries in corner Well, holy crap. Both parts look great. I can't even imagine making
anything like that. Yes yes, I know it's tailored for high-spec
machines so of course it'll look good, but... I almost find it hard to
believe that it's actually Source!

JFry, they turned HDR off so you can see how much plainer everything looks when the whole screen isn't glowing.

Oohhhhh, so that's what that was! I was really confused by what
was happening. I thought it had something to do with simulating
the way your eyes adjust to light.

I saw a shorter version of this that was posted on mapcore a while
back, but it was really low quality and didn't show off the effect very
well (was just filmed from a G4 television program that was talking
about it I think). Does look rather sexy, but I don't think its all
THAT huge an improvement going by the two example areas.

I concur. For a minute and a half 180mb is bloody rediculous.

As far as the movie goes they managed to show very little. It looks
cool, though not as spectacular as they're claiming. Have to wait till
I can play it though.

Waaaaaaaaaah! File too big!

God....I wish all previews could be that big. I would rather take an extra few minutes to download a sweet quality vid than.......OMG THEY PACKED TWO MINUTES INTO 3 MEGS LOL ME SO HAPPY I SAVED TWO MINUTES!

If you are so worried about filespace, then delete some of your porn.

Man I'm in a bad mood. :/

DOH! Ok, Right Click, and click on Save Target As.. DUH. I got the file. And WOW!

Now the question is how hard do you think its going to be to map with these new light features? Will it be easier to have lights that go out when shot? As well as rooms that will get brighter when dirty windows are blown out?

They said on ATTACKOFTHESHOW that it will be released this spring..

Dude, I have broadband and it still took 20 mins for a minute and a half worth of footage. If you don't mind waiting that long for something that could easily have been put in something around the 30-50mb mark then good for you. Personally I felt ripped off after spending that time and monthly quota for something that short and not really very impressive.

And besides, I worked hard to build up my collection of porn  .

True....for 170 megs it was a pretty bogus display of major "improvements"....

...however....it took me 4> minutes to DL with GetRight...I dunno why...

Not to mention that almost 20 seconds of it was the valve logo and into splash.

Dosn't look that much better than the stress test, and almost non of
that was ever put into the game. Furthermore, community mappers
arn't using the power of then engin because we dont know how to make
all that fancy stain glass, etc.

Mapping will not be any harder with the new lighting. All it does is improve the 'game' engine so all your maps you have made before will suddenly have dynamic lighting when it is finished.

Video was a waste of downloading but nice pictures!

Well, I've seen some people using fancy effects already. I think it's
just because mappers spend less time with texture creation and more
with architecture that you won't see these effects used a lot.

And 170 MB for this, well, that's too large. It looks nice, but I
believe it's something you have to see real-time in-game before you can
really appreciate it.

Now I feel like a Ferret who stubbled onto a bunch of shiney stones.. I was impressed, and you humens were like.. it just car keys you stupid ferret..

".Drool but they jingle when I run around.. shiney object OHHH.. .drool"

But the dynamic lighting video for Doom3 was much better, I have to agree.

As for the Download it only took like 56 seconds for me. And I am on Road Runner Cable.. humm strange that it was taking so long for everyone else..

This isn't a dynamic lighting video, its high dynamic range lighting,
which is a different topic entirely. Dynamic lighting is lighting which
can change in real time. Source has pretty limited capabilities when it
comes to this, due to the prominent use of precompiled lightmaps, while
Doom 3 used dynamic lighting extensively. High dynamic range lighting
offers far more levels of lighting value for each pixel - most engines
offer only 256 levels of brightness, which compared to what the eye can
differentiate between is very low. I believe source is one of the only
engines that currently allows for it, though I think I heard it was
added to Far Cry? It needs pretty high spec graphics cards in order to
run at acceptable speeds though, so you'll probably need a near top of
the range current gen card to make use of it.
