Just because the HL2 engine will be capable of much larger environments doesn't mean they have to be that big. seems like an unfounded worry to me Orph.

There's 2 sides of the coin. Gameplay will dictate types of environments. Types of environments will dictate types of gameplay.
I am sure HL2 will still rule all, in the standard DM department, just because its gameplay is so solid. Who knows, this Stalker game may not be that much fun....But, if it's moddable, I'm sure those awesome environments will be applied to some solid gameplay. I think that such large environmets may work with DM, if you offer vehicles or means of traversing them quickly. Then you would possibly see long distance chases, ending in close quarter battles.
It does seem that large maps with tons of rubble and foliage, will turn into camper heaven - but that is a style of play that many people enjoy. Personally, I like the bigger maps in HL (yes..bootcamp junkie), just because with mastery of the tau, you can move uber fast. I don't like to camp, I prefer to be very quick, precise, ruthless, and keep the campers from settling in too long. Therefore, having campers gives me a challenge - IF there's a way to move very fast, and spam the hell out of them. Otherwise, it forces you into a counter-camp...which doesn't excite me as much.
Either way it goes, I am looking forward to mapping at that level of detail, for whatever engine I can.

in CoD there is a map called brecourt, It is open terrain for the most part, but since its well made it isnt just sniper wins on it. However on some other maps like rocket, Snipers need to be limited otherwise they rule, It very much depends on the map.

I'd say the larger maps will lead to much more interesting prospects for Team DM - with building to building domination style play, tactics being layed out... could be excellent.

Yup, the possibility for an uber sized killbox is kind frightening, but hell, if people want to waste their time on such things, it just makes real quality stand out that much more against the background of trash.
I just hope it doesn't become hard to find servers that aren't running the trash...

I'm looking forward to Stalker and Far Cry much more than HL2 at the moment - both look stunning and seem to offer a different twist in the FPS genre.
That's not to say that i'm not looking forward to HL2 also - that looks like it'll kick bottom when it eventually arrives!

Talking about the camper style of play- any one here played the game Vietcong?
Its a rather decent little game, great for LAN games. Basically, you and your team are pitted against a section of a jungle loaded down with VC's. All they do is camp, and its designed so that they blend in really well with their environment.
The battles can take about 30-40 minutes to do, and its always a great rush running through an open section of terrain not knowing whether its secure or not.
So, if camping is your kind of thing, you might want to check that game out. Its a blast.

Originally I was interested in Far Cry, but these days it doesn't seem so special. I saw that stalker thing on gametrailers a couple of days ago and it really is impressive, I'll certainly be keeping my eyes open for it.

Orph I agree with the others... there are always going to be maps that aren't fun, but I think most mappers will have the sense to not make a map that is 100% campers or so big that you never see anyone even in a 32 player match (*cough*chaocity3*cough*). Everybody seems to have all these worries about gameplay and multiplayer and how to map for a game that none of us can play yet... it doesn't make sense me.
Stalker looks really good, shame it's such a poor quality movie though
