I dunno how many of you guys, are paying attention to the game 'Stalker: Oblivion Lost'. I saw some videos of this game a while back, and was pretty damn impressed. The scope of these environments are pretty amazing. Today, I watched the newest ingame video, displaying the weather effects, and daytime/nighttime transitions. I must say... OMG~! The attention to detail, and amount of 'life' these environments have, is unsurpassed.

This suckers at the top of my list now. Enjoy the video.

I think this link is getting alot of traffic right now, so keep trying if it doesn't work for you.

i have thought of one thing important.. with the mapping area of the HL2 predictions, we all will need to rethink our idea of deathmatch mapping..

i mean, no_patience is a small map, and there are times when it was to big to play.. how are we going to have fun in a map that can potentially be the size of a real city???

i am fearful, that the days of 2 on 2 maps are numbered

this is a very scary question..
  • do i get insulted cause you have not seen it yet?
  • do i worry, that i made such a dud that people don't know it exists?
  • do i point to my profile and say, "there"?
  • do i get excited that i have someone new to show it to?
M_S, you have been here a very long time, do you not explore this great site of ours?

sometimes, ever so often, you ask a question as if you joined today.

feel free to dload any of my maps, i would enjoy some fresh feedback, they are old, but i am proud of them.

Just because the HL2 engine will be capable of much larger environments doesn't mean they have to be that big. seems like an unfounded worry to me Orph.

not really bud, think about it, people knew the HL1 engine would not support certain things, but did them anyways, even at a cost.. these same people will push the HL2 engine as well.

i am betting, that large empty maps will swarm the net.

i made, a near perfect 2 on 2 map, and it saw less action than my big early maps did, course it may be due to when i released it, more so than its quality.. it did arrive rather late in the game..

still, i think it a valid concern.

i sure will be glad when we can talk openly about HL2.. sighs i got so much info for you to hear

There's 2 sides of the coin. Gameplay will dictate types of environments. Types of environments will dictate types of gameplay.

I am sure HL2 will still rule all, in the standard DM department, just because its gameplay is so solid. Who knows, this Stalker game may not be that much fun....But, if it's moddable, I'm sure those awesome environments will be applied to some solid gameplay. I think that such large environmets may work with DM, if you offer vehicles or means of traversing them quickly. Then you would possibly see long distance chases, ending in close quarter battles.

It does seem that large maps with tons of rubble and foliage, will turn into camper heaven - but that is a style of play that many people enjoy. Personally, I like the bigger maps in HL (yes..bootcamp junkie), just because with mastery of the tau, you can move uber fast. I don't like to camp, I prefer to be very quick, precise, ruthless, and keep the campers from settling in too long. Therefore, having campers gives me a challenge - IF there's a way to move very fast, and spam the hell out of them. Otherwise, it forces you into a counter-camp...which doesn't excite me as much.

Either way it goes, I am looking forward to mapping at that level of detail, for whatever engine I can.

I still wouldn't worry about it. just map the way you like to and don't worry about what all the GA types do. quality and artistry will always be valued in the pit. what else do you want?

in CoD there is a map called brecourt, It is open terrain for the most part, but since its well made it isnt just sniper wins on it. However on some other maps like rocket, Snipers need to be limited otherwise they rule, It very much depends on the map.

actually, thats a point i had not considered, albeit a valid one :/

no i was thinking more of just big and empty, i would be happy and satisfied with bigger maps if they had a reason for being so.. as a matter of fact, i have been seriously considering making the "riceland" pictures i posted into a playable map for HL2, to scale..

that would make it one of the biggest maps online, but it would be an undertaking to do it and not have just a bunch of non-enter-able buildings..

anyways, i think you may be right, my concern is pointless till it happens...

i just have this image of a killbox the size of denver and that image just, well its awful.

but whispers that dune-buggy rolls along pretty nifty, a killbox with those as the primary weapons might peak my interest :heee:

I'd say the larger maps will lead to much more interesting prospects for Team DM - with building to building domination style play, tactics being layed out... could be excellent.

Yup, the possibility for an uber sized killbox is kind frightening, but hell, if people want to waste their time on such things, it just makes real quality stand out that much more against the background of trash.

I just hope it doesn't become hard to find servers that aren't running the trash...

Potatoes for arms and snabbits for eyes

I'm looking forward to Stalker and Far Cry much more than HL2 at the moment - both look stunning and seem to offer a different twist in the FPS genre.

That's not to say that i'm not looking forward to HL2 also - that looks like it'll kick bottom when it eventually arrives!

Talking about the camper style of play- any one here played the game Vietcong?

Its a rather decent little game, great for LAN games. Basically, you and your team are pitted against a section of a jungle loaded down with VC's. All they do is camp, and its designed so that they blend in really well with their environment.

The battles can take about 30-40 minutes to do, and its always a great rush running through an open section of terrain not knowing whether its secure or not.

So, if camping is your kind of thing, you might want to check that game out. Its a blast.

Originally I was interested in Far Cry, but these days it doesn't seem so special. I saw that stalker thing on gametrailers a couple of days ago and it really is impressive, I'll certainly be keeping my eyes open for it.

Orph I agree with the others... there are always going to be maps that aren't fun, but I think most mappers will have the sense to not make a map that is 100% campers or so big that you never see anyone even in a 32 player match (*cough*chaocity3*cough*). Everybody seems to have all these worries about gameplay and multiplayer and how to map for a game that none of us can play yet... it doesn't make sense me.

Stalker looks really good, shame it's such a poor quality movie though

As long as my PC can handle it, I can't wait for HL2. There are so many possibilities, single player too remember, that are impossible with the HL1 engine. To name a few.
  • Big cities with drivable cars (that can drive into buildings), office blocks, sniping
  • Better jungle settings
  • Great detail (single player especially)
  • New entity possibilities (hopefully)
  • More realistic environment
Also, who knows what mods there might be? I'd love to see a HL2 version NS, and also TFC2 would be great, if it comes out.
