Japan is not cool because it's Japan;

It is different. That's why it's so god damn cool.

The only country I would like to visit and stay if I could speak the language easily.

Don't forget "skeleton" versions of EVERYTHING.

I'm kidding, I like a lot of stuff that comes from there. However, on the note of anime ... most anime is animated in Korea, at least now.

What's with the need to make everything as small as possible? I mean, I know I'm American and I should like things as large as they can be and everything, but, I do like things smaller (electronics), but, some of the things they develop there are microscopic.

I wouldn't want to live there. Too many people and way too humid. I'd probably die from blood loss from having nose bleeds every day.

Heres a post I made in a different forum on this very topic. Forgive the lack of capitalisation but it seemed appropriate at the time.

whats with the whole japan thing? i look through my msn list, half the people have japanese characters in their name or names like Rokiro or whatever, what the hell is that. they all watch anime, some of which is good i have to admit but the majority of it is annoying crap, or cartoon bestiality porn. also the ^^ emoticon pisses me off. it has no mouth. you cruel bastard, bringing an emoticon into the world without a mouth. to summarise, if it wasnt for awesome tv shows like takeshis castle and iron chef, i would fart in japans general direction. and dont put random japanese phrases into conversation. and just because a movie is anime doesnt make it good. the same movie done with live action would be just as good, if not better. in fact it would likely be better since only 0.5% of anime is done well. the rest has annoying jerky motion and more detail seems to be in the MOTION LINES than the characters themselves. to be fair however this style is often aimed towards children. that doesnt stop 20yo geeks watching it tho, just because its japanese and supposedly that makes it good. just being anime, or japanese, does not automatically make something good. there is bad anime. there are bad japanese things. not all anime is bad. not all japanese things are bad. but its sad to see so much bandwidth hard drive space and dvds used up by CHILDRENS TELEVISION SHOWS.

wow, that felt good.

Wait what does you forgetting something you learned have to do with
Japan? Is that supposed to reflect poorly on their alphabet?

Not to post again too soon, but, can someone answer a question for me ...

Why are the bulk of people who're apes**t over Anime (not very good anime either) completely distraught off of manga? The most common excuse I've heard is, "I need color in comics" ... but that's just bulls**t. Most people who say that still haven't read anything good.

Anyway, I was just wondering thoughts on that ... if it's ever come up.

whats manga, precious?
They're just Japanese comic books, traditionally black and white or grey scale. Practically every anime ... ever ... was first manga. Except the rare cases (Cowboy Bebop) where anime became manga.

If you want more information, look up "Osama Tezuka", who basically formed manga (thus anime) into what it is today. (AstroBoy, Buddha, Cyborg 009, Metropolis, Tetsujin 28, so on and so forth).

I know, one thing that turns people off of it is that when they think "Black and White Comic" they think From Hell or Sin City. Which is a completely different style.

I still think it's funny though, since Tezuka got most of his inspiration and style from Disney animation.

Yes, RealUltimatePower, we all know about it, just like we all know about Maddox. The book is better anyhow.

Full Metal Alchimist is overrated; it's okay.

If you think Cowboy Bebop is the best ... then you haven't watched much of anything. Bebop is a great show, though.

You want to watch something awesome, see Interstella 5555. So goddamned awesome. Legend of Black Heaven, I hear is good as well. The reason I mention both of those is that they're music oriented.

Swings and roundabouts people. I guess some people just watch anime
under the aspirations of "becoming japanese" and don't care if its
actually providing them with enjoyment, but most people just watch it
because they enjoy it. I don't need to be told by people that the anime
I watch is crap, made for kids, or that the manga is SOOO much better -
the simple truth is that if I watch something and enjoy it, I'll
continue to watch it I'm not gonna give two s**ts about the
repercussions on somebody's opinion of me by doing so. Just because you
don't like something, doesn't mean that thing has no merit or that
there is something wrong with them for liking it.

And wilson, there is never any need to call somebody on an internet
forum like this a geek - lets face it, we've ALL got a bit of geek in
us if we are interested in any aspect of game development, its about
the one common thing that unites us all

Crono, I've given manga a try in the past, but it didn't really grip
me. Its probably to do with the fact I never enjoyed comic books,
though as I was never interested in cartoons even as a child yet do
enjoy a lot of anime, maybe its not really fair to use that as a basis.
Much love for FMA by the way; unlike most anime I've seen it doesn't
dwell on things too long, fill half the time up with flashbacks or
unnecessary explanations (here's lookin' at you, Naruto!), or take 7
episodes to finish a fight  It's also got a pretty gripping
storyline, loveable characters, and isn't afraid to be very harsh in
unexpected ways once in a while. I've very few bad things to say about
FMA, certainly one of the best anime series I've seen.

I just didn't care for it, seemed too much like 90% of everything else out there. Not in the way of "filler", since that's what you're talking about, but, plot and "growth" it's just a little darker in some areas. I tend to like OVA series just because they have maybe 13 episodes to cover everything. There aren't that many series that go over 26 episodes. Only the ones that are overplayed here are the ones that have long lifes (give or take about five series)

I just get surprised that there's less people who like manga in general. Also, usually, the entire story is there. In a lot of cases though the only advantage is that the manga looks better throughout (dragon ball for example, manga is actually fast) But, in the cases of movies, the manga is completely different. It's like the difference between any movie based on a book and the book it's based off of. I'd personally suggest reading Akira, if you read anything. It's very good. The movie only covers maybe 1/3rd of the entire story, so, if you liked the movie, you'll probably like the manga, which is actually well fleshed out. The movie just feels rushed in some areas (story wise), however, it's so different that you could view it as separate.

Anyway, so, no. No one can answer me why?
Blame it on Microsoft, God does.

I wouldn't like to put out a general answer as I'm sure it varies from
person to person, but for me, I prefer just kicking back and watching
anime on my TV to sitting at my computer screen scrolling through some
scanned manga. I don't think it would make a difference if I actually
had a physical copy either though - the medium just doesn't appeal to
me.

I may well give the Akira manga a shot because watching the film you do
tend to feel there was potential for more content and story there.
Would be nice to be filled in a bit more. I really did feel like I was
only getting part of the story through the anime, and that there was
much more developed that just couldn't be slotted into a film format.

I see your point about short anime series and to an extent agree. When
a series has a defined end point and a specific tale to tell, it can be
far more focused in each episode. Oddly enough though, my favourite
series have all been ongoing ones. Perhaps the reason is that as a
series goes on longer, you can grow more attached to the characters.
FMA with its 51 episodes probably struck it just about perfect for my
tastes - long enough to grow very attached to the characters, but still
with a fixed end point and with every episode serving a purpose (ie. no
"s**t we caught up with the manga - lets throw in some crappy filler
episode", a la Naruto  ).

Yes, it seems Toriyama and Kishimoto stuff really gets filler up the ass. I believe usually because everyone loves their stuff so much that they begin making the anime series while they're still producing the manga. This is why Dragon Ball Z (specifically) has so much filler. His studio worked faster than Toriyama and his assistant.

Also, I really just want to find someone to talk to about the Akria manga. It's just a really wonderful story and MUCH more thought out and comprehensive then the film.
No one I know either has time or just refuses to read any comic that's void of color.

I would however like to see the watercolor print they did of Akira about ten years ago in the US. Because, the pages that are watercolor already are really nice.

Also, I kind of stray away from longer series because if I do like them, I'd probably be more apt to buy them ... longer series cost more. Then some of the ones that are short cost an arm and a leg (Trigun, for example, is well over $100, some places $200, here)
