As far as I know, it's coming out in November 2005.

But does anyone know whether it can load custom maps on the XBox platform? I don't have any console myself, so I don't know much about them.

At least it'll allow all the people who can't afford to buy a new computer to play the game.

I think it's just HL2 and (maybe?) Lost Coast. No multiplayer or coop announced.

with the xbox360, because its coming on november 2005...

No, it's being released on the Xbox. The thing's probably done already.

It's just hl2 ... as far as I've read. They specifically said no multiplayer. And obviously, you can't mod it. Name some console games that you can mod like any pc game.

Apparently, the textures, models, and some other stuff is at a far lower quality, but, I've read they actually improved shadows, since the xbox's video card was specially designed and has some special pixel shader registers, or something.

I really don't like FPS' on consoles. The controllers just aren't
suited for them in the way a keyboard and mouse are. That's why
all those Haloers who go on about how great the Xbox is get on my
nerves...

Racing/sports games - Console

FPS - PC... only.

And on that note, SNES and N64 are the only consoles that should ever
have existed. I still play Donkey Kong and Mario Kart religiously

No, the N64 was an okay console just because it had okay games. Nothing "fantastic". However, NES (SO many), SNES (At one point Square WAS good), Saturn (Panzer Dragoon, Astal, D), Dreamcast (Too Many to name), even Genesis (Comix Zone, Sonic, Vectorman), and the newer consoles all have at least one "must own" game (ICO, Silpheed, Ikaruga (DC and GC), Eternal Darkness, MGS3, Symphony of the Night, Persona, The Resident Evil remakes are fantastic, etc [Xbox doesn't count since all it's "best" are on computer anyway]). If you want to go even deeper, the reason to own an MSX is Metal Gear 1 and 2 ... not that it's in English or anything. (MGS3 Sustenance is going to have complete ports of both  )

As for FPS on console, I'd agree, except some of them are made pretty well. Apparently it's pretty easy to control Halo because of the dual analog sticks. But, before, the games actually gave time to aiming and such (Medal of Honor and Underground). But there's really only a handful that are made properly. Pretty much all the new ones have God awful controls.
Blame it on Microsoft, God does.

Agreed. Playing Halo on xbox is like having kidney stones. I always get caught in the corners and just end up looking up and down and getting fragged.
I tried sniffing coke, but the ice cubes kept getting stuck in my nose.

I only play FPS's, and that's why I'll never own a console. My friend wants to give me his PS2, but I declined.

Indeed. I find consoles severly inadequate. And just so I
didn't waste money on one for a sports game, I bought a little
controller for my PC. It's soooo much fun

I dunno if I can agree that FPS is better on the PC rather then the console. Sure the control is a lot better, but games like halo make up for this by having their characters move slowly.

Halo in the console is much funner on the console. There I said it =P. If youve played both, then you know the console is better, not because of the shere drop in frames that the PC has, but because of the controler. Just try it. But other then that Ill agree with everything said. The console controls just arent accurate enough fot FPS (with the acception of halo because you straif to help aim).

Thank you FS, and OS, I'll have to point out that your argument is only
in favour of Halo. PC or Console, I didn't like it. I don't
know... something about it was... not right.

But I know it's still a lot of fun to play with friends when you're just goofing off.

I think it has more to do with halo being a bad game than anything else. But seriously, halo was never really meant for PC as far as I can tell. I've played it on xbox, its the best FPS I've played on a console since Goldeneye (but its about 1/4 as good as that). I'd never own a console for the same reason as Satchmo. French Toast has the right idea, if you have a PC you dont really need any other electronic equipment. A PC can play movies, receive TV, you can play games on it, what more could you want?

It was origanly being designed for the pc I beleve and a little promo shot of it was on the back of the Voodoo 5 boxes.

But as for consoles I'm not a big fan of them for fps games I preffer the pc for that but nothing can compare to sitting around the tv having a game of tekken or ready to roumble with your mates while having a few beers as well.

I havent been tempted to buy a xbox or ps2 not enough games on there that would justify the cost of the console infact no xbox games have taken my fancy and only Final Fantacy X and X2 would be the reasons I would get a ps2. But if Sega had made another console I would have no doubt got that. I would get a GC if I could afford it just for the donky kong bongos and if I see one on ebay for as cheap as I got my dreamcast for I'll probably bid on it.

Based on my assumptions and my knowledge of Xbox games, I'd say it will have multiplayer, but not coop. You can always put more maps on it- Xbox's do have Hard drives- you can download new maps for any game for the Xbox really.

Before i start my rant i have to say: Halo and Halo 2 are sooo fun!

Now, I think that HL2 should have never been put over to console. it actually depresses me to see the genius of source put to console. it will never be the same. they will leave out alot of important stuff: Graphics (i doubt that a measly 750mhz xbox could handle full Hl2 graphics), probably the physics (well actually i think they will be more cut down then left out) and gameplay (they will either take out levels and make the game gay and completable 3 hours max (eh Doom 3 on xbox anyone?) or add ridiculous extra levels that have no point)
sure valve will make more money for the console export but i have seen too many games fail when they are changed from platform to platform. also Hl2 is a PC game, it always will, it just wont be the same on an xbox!
i think hl2 should stay hl2 on PC.

When HL2 gets ported to the XBox, the graphics suffers in regards to
pixelation and non-antialiasing. The physics stays the same, but
there are less physics objects in the game (none of those trash things
and movable objects in the PC version).

And yes, the game will probably be shorter. Ravenholm will
definitely stay, but I am not sure about levels such as "Follow
Freeman" or "Black Mesa East".

Dude that Measly 750mhz of Xbox is more powerful than most PC's you'll use! Because the hardware of the xbox is known perfectly, software is developed to full potential. Cronos would explain it. Why do you think Hlao looks better on Xbox than on PC, yet to get almost as good graphics you have to have a beast of a PC.

Halo looks and plays better on the Xbox simply because it's a port ... literally. They didn't change anything, least of which is the models.

The Xbox is not more powerful then most PCs. The only thing that's "better" is the video card resources and some of the CPU registers. Which are both obsolete now, since most people are switching to the new video cards and 64-bit processing.

Myrk ... the hardware of the xbox is the same as the hardware of a computer ... they're the same architecture. Even the Xbox 360 is an adaptation of the G5 Macs (In fact they used a G5 to run the 360 Demos at E3)
This is really the reason I don't like Xbox, Microsoft didn't really develop anything, they just used rights they already owned with minimal development. In fact all the "advanced" things in the console aren't made by Microsoft, they contact 3rd party companies and get them to design special parts.

In any case, speaking of comparable power to PC, the PS3 will only have a slightly more powerful video card, says nVidia. (Compared to the 7800GTX)

Oh and one more thing, don't let Xbox performance fool you ... it's running at 640 x 480, on a TV (which makes almost anything look better) at around 60Hz ... play games on your computer on that setting and you'll get much better performance.

Also ... just a question, can you load entire games onto the XBox HDD? Because you can on the PS2 ... and that's the only thing making me want a Network Adapter for it

I strongly suggest getting a gamecube. They just lowered the price too, $99.99 with Super Smash Brothers.
Blame it on Microsoft, God does.

Dude, Gamecubes were as low at ?29.50 in the year they were released, and the game selection ain't that great, and when it comes to piracy on it, theres just no point because of the diddy little discs it uses. You have to mod the case to let it use full sized discs.

As for the whole PS3 vs Xbox360, I've recently had a chat with someone working on next gen games, and he proclaimed that the 360 is more powerful than the PS3, but only just. However Sony does have most of the decent copyrights on games and stuff, so I'd expect the PS3 lineup to be better in some aspects.

You can buy blank mini-dvds

New? I doubt that. And if it were, it wasn't a Nintendo set price. (That's about $60 USD, so I'm positive that was used)

I don't know what you're talking about bad game selection, to be honest. It may have less games. But, comparing it to something like the PS2 ... I can only think of maybe three or four games that are "fantastic". While almost all 20 games I have for GC are at least great to fantastic. Or at the least fun.

I think the game quality is much higher. But, there are, as I said before, good games on all consoles (almost).

As for the whole 360 vs. PS3 thing, I really don't care. It's not even time to upgrade consoles, really. Just because it's been out for Five years doesn't mean the hardware is obsolete. For instance, the PS2 is just now getting a single game that uses normal mapping. The games coming out now look like the games that came out the first year of its life ...

Mini blank DVD's cost more, normal blanks cost around 10p each (18 cent). As for GC's game collection, I was never a fan of the 3D remakes of the original 2D games such as mario and sonic. Only games left were Resident Evil 4 (which is good I have to admit) and Monkey Ball, but thats on the Xbox and PS2 now with extra features. I do like the way the GC was made to have extremely short load times though!

Actually, they're just as long, they just do them at times while you're busy.

Personally, I really enjoy the Nintendo remakes, blow away their first attempts on the 64.

BUT, there's also games like Eternal Darkness, The other RE games (0 and 1 are fantastic now), Viewtiful Joe (The first got kind of ruined when ported, since they put content from VJ2 in), Soul Calibur 2 was best on GC (Soul Calibur 1 was still better though ... when counters mattered), and Ikaruga. To name some non-Nintendo games. As for the "classic-remakes", most are well made are, more then anything, fun games. I honestly don't know what everyone's beef is with the Mario remakes, specifically. They say it's too short, or easy, or whatever. But, so are half the games that are out there that get high praise.

As for the price of Mini-DVDs, it depends on who makes them, I'd suggest GQ, if they do make them, they're cheap and the best recordable media I've used. Ever.

But, if you already open you GC to mod it, I doubt there's much sweat of leaving the case off to play games.

Anyway, I was just offering a different perspective.
Blame it on Microsoft, God does.

Sorry to go off-topic for a bit, but I reckon Metroid Prime is the best
example of that. Short cutscenes between the large areas, and the
sub-areas are all blocked off by doors, so it only loads the ones it
needs to (presumably the one you're in and the adjacent ones). I think
this is the way it works, since enemies only respawn if you go two or
more rooms away from them. And it's a damned good game... (IMHO of
course)

I've played through a lot of console FPS games and don't mind the control limitations of playing using a joypad, so Metroid Prime with its lock-on system just didn't do it for me.

I really don't see the First Person Metroid games as a FPS. It's metroid. It's not like it's some port or anything like that. It's pretty fun.

But, Loco, Mario Sunshine does as well.

Really the only games that loading beasts on the GC are third party mutli-platform games that haven't been adjusted for the GC. (Deadly Alliance is a good example)
keved said:

That's so stupid. You'd think there'd be some software to put in the "boot code" to the console (Be it Xbox, PS2, Whatever). Guess, people are relying on mod chips too much.

Crono, how would you change the boot code? I'd assume for a console that would be hardcoded into the BIOS or similar.

Change? Who said change? I didn't say change.

Instead of "put in" I guess I should have said "activated". It's the basic way EVERY console works since the beginning of time. You could reverse engineer the bios to find out the code and put it on your copy of whatever game. (Very useful if you're an independent developer wanting to make console games and no money for licensing. And no, this isn't illegal. However, distributing a console's bios is)

The only way you'd really get in trouble is if you invoked a trademark/copyright (and sold the game)

But, for all intensive purposes, it'd be SO much easier if someone just made a "boot patch" so to speak. That applied the boot code (which is normally only able to be burned special ways, but when it comes down to it ... it can be emulated)

It's much like a dreamcast with booting, except SEGA didn't really protect the dreamcast, since they knew there was really no way to stop piracy, they might as well profit off of it.

Another way to get boot codes is to get a copy of a developer disc. Every CD console has one, cartridge consoles can just directly connect to the hardware, but it bypasses all protection on completed systems. I think now, they sell developer systems more often, which just don't have the cd protection installed/activated/whatever.

I know with the Saturn, the developer disc got out and really eliminated the need to mod the console.

Okay, on another note, maybe I should explain something: BIOS is not hardcoded. Just because it comes pre-loaded and is saved somewhere on the board doesn't mean it can't be changed. You can update your BIOS, it's easy. As far as I'm aware the only programming construct you could never change that is still used today is digital gates (circuit design). Where the very design of the circuit is an algorithm.

But your Basic Input Output System is stored in protected memory built onto the board. I do know what you're thinking of though, "How does it save if there's no power", right? Since there is a default setting on your board (whatever board it maybe in whatever system, console, architecture) Well, THAT, I'm not sure about, I've never messed with it. It may be a small portion of flash or some other memory that doesn't need power to withhold stored information (using and accessing is something else).
Blame it on Microsoft, God does.
