I currently have an old Razer Boomslang 2000, which is horrible and sticky and falling apart. I need to replace it pronto, so I'm panning for opinions.

My priority is gaming precision, despite the fact that I play infrequently. So far I've heard good things about the Logictech MX310. Another possibility is a replacement Razer, but I suspect they are outclassed by today's optical mice.

Opinions? Thoughts? Polemic tirades?

Gamers who buy these expensive mice are being done over, so to speak. I'm using a Packard bell optical mouse that works a treat, and it only cost me ?10 for Dixons.

I use a logitech trackball and have no problems with it. The only thing it lacks is a wheel but I make do otherwise with that and a Microsoft Sidewinder force feedback 2. Nice combo, especially for hl and BF 1942. BTW, I hate using a keyboard to game, and I've seen these game claws type thingy controllers. Anybody got any input on which might be nice to try for a keyboard inept gamer????

I currently use http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/mouseandkeyboard/productdetails.aspx?pid=004

Its the greatest thing I ever laid my hand on.

By the way, the last thing I would recommend is a cordless mouse. They lack battery life and they are slower than corded mouse. Last time I tried a cordless, I could bearly play Half-Life due to the mouse lag.

[edit]
The addition of the "forward" and "back" internet buttons not only make internet surfing much more fun, but they can also be used in games for either reload buttons, change ROF, or change weapon whatever.

My mouse cost me 60$ (Can cur) when a standar 2 button ball mouse would cost between 10$ and 15$. But it IS worth it.

I find the MS intellimouse too bulky - I like to hold a mouse in my fingers rather than the palm of my hand.

Yes, Gollum, once again, you're right . . .

I'm partial to Logitec (none of their courless crap though) I've got a standard three button optic mouse and I woop on people, so Its good, however, I really can't imagine not having the wheel anymore. It only cost $15 because it's black, the normal (white) model is $13. A friend of mine went overkill and bought a $40 logitec, granted its a damn nice mouse, I'd never find the use for 7 buttons (only five are usable in games)
I did see a Logitec uh MX300 I think . . . anyway, it was pretty cool, it was basically what I had, but with some silver and two extra buttons which would be really nice for up coming games (taking that you have so many freakin' buttons to use, I'm running out of room on my keyboard, Far Cry, for example has controls I didn't even know of, like "hold your breath") it was only $30, so I might consider picking it up at some point.

Anyway, I don't want to be a "thread killer" so to speak (you bastards lol) so that's all from me

I'm sorry. . . lol Just kidding . . . I just can't stand Microsoft's mouse "architecture" Gollum said it best I must say, once again. By the way I can probably assume that "basic" mouse cost you "basically" $30-$50 lol. (I'm not making fun of you, gimp, it's just MS is known for overpricing questionable products.)

Anyway, to each his own.

As long as the mouse has two buttons and a wheel I'm fine. I've never really come across an instance where the mouse hindered me, as it's all about getting used to a certain sensitivity.

I've got a basic (and driverless) logitech mouse from 1996 or somesuch that replaced my big MS optical mouse which I broke, and that mouse replaced a generic Compaq one I got with my first computer...there are far more important parts of the computer to worry about for good gaming, like a sharp monitor, a fast 3d card, ram, etc etc. The per-pixel accuracy of a mouse ain't no thang, especially when I don't play games that require me to aim at single pixels...

Sorry, no, the one thing I hate almost more then anything from Microsoft is their mice. It's just a physical comfort issue, they're bulky and uncomfortable, well for me anyway. I'm not saying don't use one, its up to you, I just don't like them.

im using the MS intellimouse explorer v3, 5 buttons, scans at 6000 times a second. it cost me $90 australian, which i guess is about 40 pounds. i also have a $60 aus mousepad, the everglide ricochet 2.52  :D

if you dont like the bulkiness of the intellimouse then i'd say definately go logitech. but maybe an mx500 if you have the money

If you have a laptop, totaly go for a dual-sensor optical. they work on almost any surface with precision. the main reason I got it was that I was having touble mapping with my single-sensor model. on rougher surfaces I simply could not click on individual verticies consistantly.

I hold my MS mouse in my fingers. It is possible to use it comfortably with either fingers or palm, but I prefer to use fingers. If microsoft weren't unpopular for other reasons, you would just say you prefer to have a smaller mouse, not that the MS ones are 'bulky and horrible'. Loads of people have an MS mouse and it's not like they have any kind of monopoly in this area. If their mice suck so bad, why do so many people have them?

THIS is the mouse on my 450 pc

THIS is the mouse on my 550 pc

all have been IMO good to great mice for fragging, IMO nothing beats a 3 button, scroll wheel, opti-mouse.. the brand name is all semantics.. if you want to spend a lot, or a little.. thats your call.

meh... i use a Logitech Idontknowwhatitis. Got it june last year... its purely functional, but its pretty good considering.

MS mice are great. I suppose if you have small hands they might be a bit of a problem, but average-sized and up hands are fine with MS mice

Dude, you really need to stop reading into stuff that isn't there. No one said Microsoft mice "suck so bad" or that they're "horrible". It was simply said that they were bulky. The reason why I have that point of view isn't because they're a monopoly, it's because the damn things cramp my hand after like 2 hours of use, they're simply incomfortable.

You seem to like putting words in people's mouths from time to time . . .

Anyway, Orph, if you have a mac (the second link was a Mac mouse lol) you better have OSX running on the damn thing.

No, a standard mac mouse has one button, you can definatly buy a 3 or 5 button mouse for a mac.

Its not big deal, I was just pointing it out, In all actuality it's probably the same mouse model with a difference connector.

Also, why does everyone call it IBM compatible when Intel invented the architecture they're using? lol I've alwasy wondered that.

IBM's "famed" architecture was . . . mind boggling to say the least. Rest in peace 360. . . good night sweet prince . . .

...No, I'm kidding it should burn in hell, you think assembly is hard? ha!

It's IBM compatible and not Intel compatible because IBM made the first real 'PC' using an Intel chip... there were other companies that had arguably better solutions than intel - IBM are the ones that did the unique thing of making a 'PC', that could use different peripherals that were listed as 'IBM compatible' (so people knew that the peripheral would work on their shiny new Intel-based IBM PC).

Crono... you said you hate MS mice. What lower feeling towards something is there than hate? I maintain that if microsoft didn't exist and somebody else made that exact same mouse, you wouldn't be so hard on it

Gorb, I have weird hands then, because, as it is now, I can rest my hand on my desk and move my mouse with my fingers quite easily, no cramps. When I used a MS mouse (a long time ago) I had to actually rest my hand on the mouse, not my desk, or whatever surface under the mouse, thus hurting my wrist and causing the middle part of my palm to cramp (I have problems with my hands, not so good taking that I'm only 20, arthritis here I come . . .)

The last time I had a doctor look at it he said I had tendinitis, but it was an HMO, so I think he was full of s**t.

No, Jeff. It really is the size of the damn thing that I don't like. The company in general is a differnet matter, but if they made something that was a honest to God solution, then I'd probably be fine with it, I mean look at Mac, I don't like them, but I support OSX and their Hardware.
