sitting here, every once in a while restarting steam, on the brink of
insanity, wondering... 'is it really this important to play a silly
game?' then i slap myself and say out loud: "of course it is!"

got into a few games, lag is really bad when alotta peeps join. everyones ping goes to 900's. it was fun with 4 or 5 peeps... just kinks and overload I'm sure...

only 2 maps

gravity gun is fun as sh*t, evryone tryin to use it... lol

all player models that were in game are choosable.. NO GORDAN MODEL! :sad:

Servers are a bit overloaded, I guess.

Yea, I have fiber optic lines and put up a server around 10:00PM PST (all because I couldnt even get on any servers cuz it was so full) and it filled up full to 14 people within 30 seconds. Its been about an hour and a half and still if anyone leaves someone is in the next second. I was thinking of making a hl2 dm map real quick while the server was on and dropping it in the maps folder to put it in the rotation, that would have been crazy. It hurts seein all these people on my server talkin about how cool it is, and I havent even got to play myself:(

I can't play it! I got a new hard drive and haven't finished copying over all my files!

Not working for me, but I don't think its a server thing. I can log into steam fine, and I downloaded the update fine, but when launching the game nothing happens.

All of the validation servers are offline.

I wasn't expecting it this early! Yay!

i feel your pain. i tried opening hl2dm from its folder and it gave me
an error stating gameinfo.txt was not found. i put gameinfo.txt where
it belonged and then it gave me an error that said steam.dll could not
be opened followed by one saying filesystem_steam.dll could not be
found then it said reinstalling the application may fix it, so i
reinstalled steam, to no avail of course. now im getting an error
message stating simply: "you suck, steam hates you. go outside for once
and never touch your computer again because you are too stupid to use
it. you suck at life." actually, i made that up to lighten this grave
situation. i am re-installing half-life 2 right now... the "time left"
was going up for a while, which almost brought me to tears, now its at
about 51:30 and going down fairly fast. i think i may have made a
boo-boo in not uninstalling steam before reinstalling it, because i
dont think it did anything, and if i had done that i think it may have
fixed it. oh well, the timer has gone down 6 minutes in 2 so i think
its not going to be too much longer.

Also Hammer keeps giving me a "gameinfo.txt is an invalid format" error, and wont let me past the configuration dialogue. anyone else getting that?

I got the same line of trash, have you noticed ALL hl2 or source engine programs do that?

I played it. My choke on all servers was so high (120+) that I couldn't really enjoy it. Hell, I couldn't aim at anything, everyone was teleporting around so much because of packet loss.

From what I saw, it was pure chaos. IT was fun...should be interesting to watch unfold.

I'm sure they're just happy they got it out there. Possibly net code (and the retail punishment fest) will be better soon.

Valve is releasing a fix for Source games not opening up, iin about 5-10 minutes.

Jesus H CHRIST, this game is fun! Why the hell did they think CS:S was
a better choice? I couldn't give a crap if my ping is high, it's so
much fun to kill people with the manipulator! Hitting someone n the
head ith filing cabinet, and watch do a flip over the back of
themselves off a building, is pure utter genius! :biggrin: :biggrin: :biggrin:

Now if only they could somehow make sure my ping doesn't skyrocket. :razz:

erm, where? and how??

I played it with a couple of my flatmates on the LAN, and its great fun
but I think its too gimmicky. Lag was also really prominent even on
such a small LAN server. The physics are cool and novel - my flat mate
built a huge barricade of stuff in the second stairwell on overwatch
(is that the right name? the city one) and I managed to ram a car in as
well - took ages for anyone to mount an assault on the top floor cos of
it I think that giving the player the gravity gun from the off is
a bad move though, you can easily get by without bothering to look for
guns.

pings, on most servers i only pinged like 30 , but some when up to 200
, and that sucks a bit, i think they'll fix it a bit though :smile:

KICKASS. Too bad i have satellite internet and son't be able to play games EVER!!! (sattie uses burst speed technology which doesnt work with real-time environments like games or streaming media.) I will have to pay for another copy of HL2 now so i can put it on my laptop and bring it to work...

Can't you just install it with the same steam account? Seeing as noone at home is gonna be using the account at the same time, and both computers are yours, I don't see why you should need to buy a second copy. Even if you bought through steam, you can use the backup files option.

I'm pretty sure that would be OK. When you logon to your steam account
on another computer it automatically downloads games you have, so it
should work with HL2.

That's half the point of Steam - portability. :smile: I have my account at home and at work, though I rarely use the work copy... usually just to take notes on things to/not to do. :smile:

Well, i can't really see how they could make sure it was the same computer. They can't use the IP because anyone with a dynamic IP or anyone who switched ISP's would be screwed.
Though I am not an expert, I think if someone gets a hold of your steam account they are able to use it however they like, so long as two people don't try to sign on at the same time, or use a steam hack.

though (unconfirmed) i did hear about something in the hl2 eula that
says you can only have hl2 installed on one pc... i would look for
something about that first, unless someone can disprove this?

I agree with the manipulator dominating the game, I think HL1DM is way more.... intense in terms of using the gauss and longjump to bunnyhop trought the whole level quickchanging weapons and owning everyone.

But HL2DM is fun :smile: .

The prison map is far too small for the numbers of players that most servers seem to be hosting, endless spawn & die cycle with 12+ people :/

i mostly only played the smaller servers because of the lag :rolleyes: .the 24 player sever that i did play was waaaayyy too crowded on the prison map, and the lag was terrible.

on a different note: i tried throwing all the phys objects on the roof
in the city level... people started complaining about the lag more...
wonder why? in any case it was in the name of science, sort of. it was
pretty funny though, the roof was almost too crowded to move. (note: i
dont do this sort of stuff regularly)

Can anyone make a server or something just for us? It's probably loads more fun with a select few people that loads of random people on a crap server. For the very few times I got to play well, it was great fun. I love the way you can catch the objects people throw at you, it's so annoyingly fun :biggrin:

I was disappointed with the maps. They are good and all but don't stand out to me as great DM maps. They could've easily pumped out 2 or 3 original ones, instead of taking them from the game and changing them a bit. Aside from that and the lag, hl2dm is indeed great, and I expect many a great map from y'all :smile:

I was just playing there and had a great time. I was a bit disappointed
with the small scale of the maps, but that's a minor complaint. Seeing
people getting slaughtered with toilets and filing cabinets will never
cease to elicit a laugh from me. The weapons pack decent punch, but I
felt the slow crossbow was a letdown as combined with high ping and
erratically moving opponents it's hard to kill folk.

I'm eagerly awaiting some of the large quality maps that will come out
of here and elsewhere, because it's very hectic at the moment, which
isn't the style I enjoy most.

I don't think I'll enjoy it in the long run but it is fun for a laugh.
I just made a LAN server to look around the maps in peace, and decided
to build the best wall I could in the stairwell on overwatch. Managed
to get both cars, the big garbage can, and every table and filing
cabinet in the map into that little space :biggrin: Everything got locked
together at the end, so I couldnt move things at all by shooting them
or using explosives

I would not mind hosting a HL2 DM server for Snarkpit members, I have a T1 at work and have permission to use it as long as i don't use an overt amount of our bandwidth. Also i have high-speed Satelite internet, but it's REALLy laggy with games. If someone can find out how to make it not laggy i could host there too.
