It was so shocking...

Halo 2 won Best Multiplayer - and that I agree with, its multiplayer is
superior to any other XBL game and most PC games. But it also won Best
game of the Year. Now, I think people need to start hiring legit
reviewers. Not these hype-ridden idiots who see a game plastered all
over television, magazines, and hear about it in conversation then
instantly have an idea for next-weeks column.

i look at that page you linked to and think "no wonder with it running against this crap"

lets assume i am uneducated on the games a moment, it still begs to ask, why does the list not contain some games i do know about?

anywho's... i am glad you are happy vash.

bottomline, i do not trust polls, statistics or reviews if the things they are compared to are incomplete.

It doesn't bother me as much as it may look. The reason this particular
poll bothers me is because I have seen Halo 2 win every game of the
year award, and Half-Life 2 has been stabbed in the ribs.

But, polls are polls. Just like donkeys are jackasses!

I reckon Halo 2 was an amazing game, kept true to its story and all and had some really cool aditions to the original. Everything people wanted happened. Don't go on at me cus I flame it, but HL2 had nothing everyone wanted better than the original, it had new stuff, but I wanted to see the old stuff and more stuff, not just new.

No actually that is false. A lot of the old fun stuff from the first Halo was taken out. I didn't enjoy it as much as the first Halo. While it was a good game it does not deserve "game of the year" I played Fable and it sucked. Morrowind was a much better RPG on Xbox. The best game I ever played this year and one of the best I have ever played in my life is World of Warcraft. It is amazing and is right up there with games such as Half Life. I play it everyday. Everything about WoW is perfectly crafted and can be enjoyed by everyone. Just look at the awards it's won.

1up isn't exactly the most reliable place if you're looking for PC stuff.
The biggest and only serious bummer of Half-Life 2 is the installation
-- and it's so bad that we're knocking the game's final score (see
sidebar.) Once the game actually begins, however, it takes all of about
20 seconds to get over any installation woes and realize that you are
once again back in the hands of game designers who, like great film
directors, are master manipulators and draw you into their world with
anticipation and suspense.
I honestly doubt that this guy has ever installed a PC game
before. It was significantly faster for me than any game I've
installed recently, and Steam is not only brilliant but the inevitable
future.

Now, I'm not saying that HL2 should have won the game of the year, but
Halo 2 is just a laughable choice. WoW, Ninja Gaiden, or even
Burnout 3 deserved that in front of H2.

I agree Joe. Half-Life 2 doesn't deserve to win Game of the Year
everywhere, but at least in some categories. But when Halo 2 starts
beating out HL2 and other, better games, then it becomes clear that
most people are jackasses.

Halo 2: Only gets awards because of good advertising and ultimately by
the large hordes of f**ked up twats who would buy Bungie's poo if they
said it tasted nice.

Half-Life 2: Excellent game, gets no awards due to virtually
non-existent advertising (least ways from what I've seen) and Bungie
saying its utter cack so that their fans won't buy it and realise just
how much better it is than Halo 2

What did they remove from Halo 2 that was in Halo 1? I didn't notice anything gone apart from a the old SMG, but now you get dual smgs! And seriously, anyone here actually played Halo 2 when you jump on the back of a giant 4 legged robot thats going through the city and go inside it and blow it up from inside, but having battles inside it?! It's amazing! Sure HL2 has physics, but not much of it blows me away (apart from the citadel, that was sweet).

Argh I hate fanboyism  Really, what game you think should have
won game of the year has no bearing on what IS the game of the year.
Both Half-Life 2 and Halo 2 are good games, and which you think is the
better of the two really is not important in the grand scheme of
things. This was a popularity contest, and Halo 2 won. To be honest,
who cares?

Not surprised, there are more console gamers than PC gamers, so obviously Halo 2 won (but what about HL2 x-box vs Halo 3?)

Just in comarison I thought HL2 was better than Halo 2, in terms of
graphics and gameplay, multiplayer I can understand. I just thought
that Halo's HUD was too cluttered, and that prevented me to get into
the "Flow" that the first Halo had.

Hmm, HALO 2 has year 2002 graphics like unreal 2, HL2 takes it a huge step forward, and i mean a huge
step forward, like the first man on the moon or similar, Plot is
excellent, Graphics are awesome, Gameplay is a joy to behold its that nice.
Halo has fast paced shoot em up and flatten em gameplay like UT and
Doom had. In singleplayer also. Epic battles yes, but whats the fun in
them when you have some pretty poorly made stuff. Half life 2 had
Awesome level design. Look at it. Its believable. Its water is realistic
and the physics are near perfect. Halo 2 has a jeep with a gun on...
and some nice renders and thats it. Ooh, do i se cutscenes in halo 2
that are avi files that make the game a little better, do I see suspense, enthrallment, and involvement? the answer is no.
You can play it in one sitting, or pick it up whenever. Half life 2 has
huge amounts of suspense, bucketloads splashed in your face that is
different and refreshing each time washed down with packets adrenaline
to fit. Half life 2 is like a very good book. Once you start, you cant
put it down. I saw 5 minutes of Halo 1/2 and said "i'm bored, i'm going
home". Halo 2 you have to pay money to play online. Does Halo have
people getting involved in action? not really. the best bit I've seen
is a big squad dropship flying in and dropping off troops, But HL2 has
that and did a much better job of it!

Anyway, thats my View of the situation and the 2 games...

Also, PCG UK have given HL2 its deserving title and rank in thier
charts... Best first person shooter and a game of the year sticker.

That site there Vash makes me think of GameFAQ's... Full of stupid
console players who think that consoles beat all and PC's are only good
at chatting and viewing websites. I feel like rounding up all the
console players and saying "This is my 3 year old PC. it can run Halo
far better than your big oversized paperweight of a console. It can run
F'ing games in detail you guys only dream about... And its 3 F'ing years old!"

Also a not for consoles. they dont get visual lag (except Gta:sa)
because they're running Low resolution (3 times less to 1024x768) and
they reckon it looks good. 640x480 looks horrible. and halo 2, "the best game ever!" runs in crappy detail. Unreal 2 looks better!!! and thats 3 years older!

anyway, thats my rant over with.

I've played Halo2 on a pretty powerful machine. It was OK, but definetly not worthy of such a grand title. If you hire a team of professional judges to evaluate Halo2 and Half-life2, they will surely come to the conclusion that HL2 is much better. The problem is that that poll was adressed to the common gamer. I suspect that they voted for the game that they knew, and not for the best."Ohh, Halo2! Looks cool, seen it at X! HL2? Whats that? Never heard of it! votes for Halo" I'll bet that 70% of those who voted for Halo2 have never even played HL2! HOW can you compare these two, when you only know how one of them looks?

I enjoyed both games equally, and liked them both for different
reasons. Halo 2 has coop, it has an engaging plot, it has some very
neat gameplay sequences, and it offers a challenge even on the second
highest difficulty mode. Its also, at times, quite repetitive, and
might not quite have the visuals of HL2.

HL2 was atmospheric, impressive to behold, and fun and varied to play.
However, the plot is not very well developed (note that I'm not saying
it doesnt exist, it just isn't handed out to players) and its really
pretty easy even on the hardest difficulty.

Dred, just because your PC can run Halo better than the Xbox doesn't
make the Xbox s**t. It cost a fraction of your PC, and you may also
notice that Halo on the PC hates (or at least did when I last
checked) running with AA on, meaning it looks somewhat worse than the
console version. 640x480 games do look quite s**t on the PC, but using
that resolution on a TV screen is perfectly acceptable and does not
look s**t.

Andrei, how did you play Halo 2 on a pretty powerful machine, when it is only out on the Xbox?

i just watched brother-in-law play halo 2 on xbox.

ugly maps.. the gameplay seemed ok i suppose, but the weapons or at least some of the block of 30 to 40% of the viewing area :/

but what caught my eye was the horribly simplistic and/or ugly maps.

anywho, IMO its no loss at all if you never see or play the game.

Just got done playing Halo 2 on x-box live and playing Halo 1 in a LAN
set-up, I must say that Halo 2 is a piece of crap. I noticed that the
players and you FOV in Halo 2 is much less than that of Halo 1. Also
the HUD clutters the already small screen you are given. And there are
too many weapons now, soooo many that I get confused as to which combo
works best.

They have even modified the weapons to make them unbalanced. Now the
sniper rifle fires faster, thus elimiating the skill required to snipe
in Halo. Same for the RPG, now it requires no skill to hit a vehicle
with the RPG with its new locking on ability. LETS JUST SAY THE
LEARNING CURVE FOR HALO HAS DROPPED SINCE HALO 2 WAS RELEASED.

After playing both worlds, I have to say I enjoyed Halo 1 over Halo 2

Don't forget that Halo 2 was designed to be a multi-platform game, so
they drag in any voters for X-Box rubbish, where as HL2 is solely PC
based, and therefore can't draw on another entire gaming community to
boost its votes. Also you'll find people who have X-Box's mainly buy
X-Box games, stearing clear of PC or other games. I know myself I only
occaisionally buy PS2 games, usually sticking with the PC.

Of course, most of the people who bother to vote are console jockies,
trying to prove how superior their conoles are to other gaming machines.

Hitting a vehicle at range in Halo was impossible - if you managed it
it wasn't skill it was luck. Adding in the lock on ability means that
vehicles DO have to worry about things at range now, but its still
perfectly possible to dodge incoming rockets. Up close, where the RPG
WAS effective in Halo, lock on is useless and so the skill required to
take out a vehicle is the same.

Halo didn't really have enough weapons, while Halo 2 gives you a far
more varied mix. Each weapon does have its ups and downs and serves a
purpose (bar the magnum) - after playing through single player I don't
see how there is any confusion as to which combos to go for, use what
you are comfortable with for the situation.

Well I got Halo 2 for Christmas and only played it a little bit so far - just seems like more of the same to me (which isn't a bad thing). I'm still adjusting to using the pad for a FPS though.

And Agent Smith, I might be a bad example, but I buy games for all formats - and don't tend to steer clear simply because it's PS2 etc, though i'm quite picky in the games that I do buy.

I just tend to play FPS more than most other types of games, and as
such my purchasing is usually done for the PC which is far superior to
consoles in all matters FPS.

So I myself will admit that my opinion is somewhat skewed by my own
preferences. I generally buy a game depending on which would be the
best system for running it, so I buy games like War of the Monsters
(a flaming awesome game for those who haven't played it) for the
console because it's tekken style gameplay is more suited to that than
the PC.

In a game of the year discussion I cannot for the life of me understand
why far cry wasn't even mentioned a single time. Yes, its a bit
older than the games that came out a couple months ago, but it is on
par or superior in many many aspects. It takes advantage of new
graphics technology to make an innovative and interesting game.
Its gorgeous. It offers plenty of shootem up action, suspense,
and just plain old fun. Yes, all the situations are sort of
generic, and the monsters lack creativity, and the voice acting of the
mercs is repetetive and boring. But I like being able to have to
think about how I am going to approach a situation rather than have the
path chosen for me. IE: do I bust in guns blazing? Do I
sneak around killing people with the mp5 at range? Do I get on
that hillside and snipe down at the encampment? Heres how it is
in HL2: run down the ally, kill the guy, go down the next ally, kill
the guy. Motor to the next area. Go down some more allys
killing people.

Disclaimer: Here is my opinion. It is in no way designed to provoke anyone or start a flame war.

I can't help but disagree I'm afraid. I thought it went like this: You
run around marvelling at the detail/graphics/AI/city, you get the HEV
suit, and have fun with exploding barrels, the pistol etc, you get a
boat and have great fun with it, you get a gun for your boat and have
even more fun, you get a gun which picks things up, and you have great
fun with that as well, you creep round ravenholm trying to avoid the
disturbing atmosphere of the place, you get a buggy with a gun and race
around an entire coastline again having fun, you get an entire army of
aliens and raid a prison, you take part in one of the most incredible
assaults on a city, and then you get to play/see an awesome ending. And
then repeat another 3 times.

Sorry, but I played this game three times over and never got bored -
maybe you found it too easy, I hear that several people did, but I'm
not too good at FPS games so I wouldn't know.

Just my opinion, nothing else.
