I haven't played since the summer, and since I've stopped playing I think my character is probably deleted.
Anyway -- I forget which server I was on, but my characters name was
Stouthand, and he was a level 48 paladin. It took me all summer
(I also had a handful of mid 20 characters I played on the side).
I was obsessed with blacksmithing (and swordsmithing). I spent
more time hunting mithril and completing BS quests than anything
else... because then I would use my new recipes to outfit my
guild. It felt good to positively impact a strangers game by
giving them a nice green iron hauberk. I'd also singlehandedly
run lowbies through the Deadmines once or twice
a day to help them pick up some of the Defias set and other items.
The last time I logged in I was in Stranglethorn Vale, but it's been so long I don't remember what I was up to.

Have a 43 Shaman on Mal'Ganis, bunch of mid 20s chars and such split over two other accounts that weren't mine.
Finally bought my own copy (I paid for my time on the other ones too though), and I'm working on a Mage who's 22 so far on Kel'Thuzad.

Guildwars gets boring pretty quickly- I never got through the game, got fed up with everyone being not just human, but having the same quests and pretty much looking identical! However I do wish WoW had dyes to dye your armour etc- be alot better.

I use to play back when WoW first came out. However I stopped in May because I wasn't gettting any school work done. I've been thinking about renewing my account, especially with the expansion pack on the horizon.

Does anyone know if they save your characters if you don't pay for a year then renew your account or does it just get deleted?

Ah crap. I guess that means I don't have anything to show for all the time I put into my characters...
Although I don't regret it, because I thoroughly enjoyed the game when I played it.

No, they should still be there, I had an account from over a year ago and finally put a full CD key and my chars from the trial were still there. They don't remove the accounts so far as I know seeing as this is paid and not free like b.net.
My 43 Shaman is "Throng". But I haven't played with that char since before summer.
My only current is now 24, a mage called "Glitter" on Kel'Thuzad.
Oh, and if you want to make the game amazingly serene and quite fun, just leave general chat channel. The game becomes perfect then.

Man... I can't decide if I am happy or sad that the WOW bug hasn't bit me. I have a character 'Corn' on Kilrog server. I'm a level 10 Tauren Hunter. I've really enjoyed the game sofar, but for some reason, I just can't sit there and put the time into leveling my character. There's just too many things I want to do with my time when I'm not working, and too much of WOW actually feels like work to me: kill 50 plain riders, kill 20 wolves, find some eagle talons for so and so... I just get tired of it and unplug before I make any real progress.
I do love Blizzard though =D

@ Gorbachev: Cool, that's good to know. I don't know when I'll
ever have the free time to play WoW again, but its good to know that my
characters will probably still be there.
@ Finger: Maybe try playing a different race? I found the Tauren race and environment to be the most boring.
I'd say give an undead character a shot. Designing the way an
undead character looks is the most fun, and the backstory behind the
missions is more entertaining than those in the Tauren starting areas (
in my opinion ).
I know what you mean when you say WoW feels like work. But,
ironically, once you start getting into professions (like skinning and
leatherworking for a hunter) and creating your own armor and items it
gets to be pretty fun. Getting involved with parties / strict
roleplaying can spice it up a bit too.
Additionally, I'm just the kind of person who likes looking for items
and improving the appearance of my character, so the first 20 levels
are a blast, because you're almost constantly finding new stuff to wear
or use.

Well, I personally found Tauren to be pretty tedious as well, it's because pretty well every other race has everything much closer together, Orc/Troll is a bit better, Undead is even better and Alliance just has it made with how close everything is together at the start. I just can't stand playing with Alliance teammates, they've always been so annoying both on my side or against me. Plus I like how horde tends to be 'fun' or goofy.

Playing a non-night elf alliance character is awesome simply because
you get to play through Duskwood, and get to see Stitches doing his
thing. I'll never forget the first time my pally encountered him
as I was trying to find my way from Westfall to the inn @ Duskwood.

Heh.. well maybe I will try playing an undead character. I'll let you know if I do. I really do want to get into the game....I was actually at a BBQ this weekend with about 4 guys from the big B, and hearing them talk about it made me want to give it another try.
