I'm sure you chose these games because of their intellectual appeal, "Aaron Da Killa".
Reckless disregard for childrens well being, women and nothing but utter contempt for other cultures.

My favourite game is obviously Half-Life. I mean we're at the SNARK pit.

Hence you're 14 you might have missed some of the best games of the 90ies. If you're ever able to see over the technically less impressive graphics you should check out these gems (my top 10 if you will)

Goldeneye
X-Com
Deus Ex
System Shock 2
Monkey Island (and all of the Lucas Arts humor adventures, they're great
Mind Rover
Alpha Centauri
Trespasser
Red Faction
Transport Tycoon

Hmmm... in no particular order: Max Payne (MP2 was also good but destroyed the story a bit), Metal Gear Solid 1 & 2 (haven't played the other MGS games), Resident Evil 1, 2 & 3 (haven't played the others), Silent Hill 1 & 2 (again, haven't played the others in the series). What I can think of right now. All of these are games that I like very much. Seems like I'm more of a console player  .

Don't forget Total Annihilation and other gems from the past. Some
old games have more gameplay in them than most new games combined.

The first System Shock was pretty good, I didn't like the second one.
Deus Ex is always worth a mention. Half-Life and Unreal. And Quake, we
can't forget the one that brought FPSs to the 3D age in 1996.
Archimedean Dynasty was a great, a bit arcadeish submarine game(closer
to space combat than submarine combat). The first Civilization was the
first game I ever got addicted to... There are so many great games out
there. I really can't choose one.

Ah before I forget: Mechwarrior 2 and Descent! You can't forget those
two either, not to mention C&C, Dune II, Dune(nice adventure/RTS
hybrid), Larry series... Arrgh, so many good games. Magic Carpet 2... I
still have it. Heroes of Might and Magic. I used to play it so
much... Way too many good games that could be my favorite...

Comparing games and saying which one is the best is like comparing
apples to oranges. Each game brings different things to the table. And
if it does it well, then we tend to call it "good".

I have to say that I really don't have a favorite game, but rather I
have a list of games I always come back to play over and over again (no
real order of preference here):

Halo - just halo 1, halo 2 was a piece of s**t

Half Life (2) - and subsuquent mods that followed

MGS 1, 2, 3

Grand Theft Auto (the first on the PS2 and the "vice" one)

Final Fantasy 6, 7, 8

World Of Warcraft

Quake

UT 2003

Super Smash Brothers (and their even better sequel on the Game cube)

Zelda: Ocarana of time (spelling?)

And I think you need to play some other games (broden your horizon) if
you really think Halo 2 was that wonderful - due note im not looking to
start a debate at how much Halo 2 sucked/was the greatest thing to
happen to the universe. I'm just saying the halo series only caters to
one style of play.

In no particular order other than as I think of them:
  • Total Annihlilation - The best multiplayer RTS ever made IMHO
  • Age of Empires - This game was my first multiplayer experience, playing on 28.8k dial-up over "Microsoft gaming zone"
  • AoE 2 & Expansion - With AoE2 I always liked to build massive bases with insane defenses and huge armies, with the agreement not to attack eachother's base until some predetermined amount of time into the game. This game is 'hella' fun.
  • Diablo 2: Lord of Destruction - This is an awesome game to play LAN with people you live with, so you can progress through the story at the same, I never liked Battle.net though. I still play LoD from time to time.
  • Counter-Strike: Source - The epitomy of competative tactical online FPS action.
  • CS:CZ - The first game to give me the FPS bug. It had some really great maps (that got overlooked because CS 1.5/1.6 players hate change).
  • Final Fantasy 7 - Really awesome RPG, with an engaging plot (for an RPG) and lots of side quests. Materia is an awesome magic system.
  • Final Fantasy 10 - Same as FF7, but replace "Materia" with "Sphere Grid"
  • Final Fantasy Tactics - Really open-ended in how you develop your party, and a whole lot of fun.
  • Phantom Brave - You could literally spend hundreds and hundreds of hours playing this game, and there would still be more stuff to do. Takes the open-ended party development concept to a whole new level.
  • Doom 1 & 2 - Do I really have to say anything about these? ZDoom makes them even better because you can have normal FPS controls (WASD + mouse)
  • Quake 2 - A lot like Doom 1 & 2, but with a better engine. The multiplayer is still really awesome too (Rails ftw) This is also the first FPS I ever played for more than a couple hours.
Reaper47, you liked Trespasser? That game could have been good if it didn't suck so bad. Awesome concept executed poorly. I'd like to see a Trespasser-esque game made on today's technology, and finished.

Now I've spent more time on this than I intended.

EDIT: I forgot these:
  • MGS 1, 2, and 3 - Holy crap these games rock. MGS3 would have to be my favorite of them.

I'd say my all-time favorite game would have to be Chrono Trigger. (As if you didn't already guess that.)
It's a game that was produced by SquareSoft at the height of their reign. It's also the pinnacle 2D PRG and a highlight for the SNES system (Final Fantasy II and III, were another two. I still think CT is a better game, all around). And it's very long and multiple endings (~17) RPGs really didn't do that often before then.

It's also the first RPG I played through and enjoyed, so there's some nostalgia there too.

Of course, I haven't played it in a couple years. Perhaps I should run through it again.
Blame it on Microsoft, God does.

Best computer game: Half-Life, there's just no contest, some get close, but HL's replay value and multiplayer, the devilish simplicity of it all, just blow the rest out of the water.

Best Console game: Super Smash Brothers for the N64, need I say more.

Best Handheld game: Golden Sun 1/2 for the GBA, the best RPG/adventure game I've ever played for 120 combined hours.

counter-strike is my favorite game of all the genres and systems i've ever played, if i have to go console then: Mario Kart, Super Smash Bro's (the 64 one), and zelda too (except Majora's Mask)

i never thought much at all of halo and halo 2 was even worse, as far as the people that like these games; it's trendy like the ipod, hopefully it passes

no offense, but let me give you some facts about mainstream: just because people do it doesn't mean it's good, not saying it's bad, just saying that the fact everyone else is doing it doesn't mean anything to me

it has nothing to do with liking games of a certain age, i like games that i never experienced when they came out because i still thought that mathblaster was the s**t
in fact, the only difference between our taste in games and yours is that we've explored more than you have and realized that there are other games out there, many suck but a lot of them are much better than halo [/2 cents]

*bungie, the makers of Halo series, is the biggest Games Developer in the World.
Subjective opinion here - If you want something more concrete, EA (while I think they suck) pulls down more money a year.
*Halo2 has the record of the most copies sold in Its Premier
Date in the entertainment Industry in the world, ever.
This is true, but it doens't make the game good, it just means the sold
a lot of games initially - this has absoluetly nothing to do with how
goodr the game is. I was there when the game came out, I got the game
at midnight when it was released, I played it and thought how little
justice it did to the first game.
*Both Halo and Halo2 are rated 10/10 in lots of Internet Sites and magazines. Look youre self.
Another subjective opinion here - at its core its just some nerd's opinion.
  • There have been 2 books on Halo and they are currently
making a movie on halo out Dec 07 i think. Thats When My mods coming
out. I should Stop Spending time on this site. it'll never be
finised.
This is true, there are books, but it doesnt neccicerily mean the game
is good. It just means someones trying to make more money on the halo
brand.

And ZOMG!!1!!1!! a mod OMG A Halo mod?! FOR HL2!! ZOMG. Way to be original.
*Halo2 Is the Most Played Xbox online game.
Once again its just numbers, it doenst neccicerily mean its a good
game, it just means its popular. If underaged dumbasses want to shoot
tiny little master chiefs on the screen, let em. It just means they
have no skill at a REAL game.

I think FatStrings summed it up:
no offense, but let me give you some facts about mainstream: just
because people do it doesn't mean it's good, not saying it's bad, just
saying that the fact everyone else is doing it doesn't mean anything to
me
You PMed me asking how does it suck? Well im not goign to argue over
something so petty. My opinion is and stands: Halo 2 was an utter
discrace to what Halo 1 set. Hopefully Halo 3 will redeme the name.

Best Game for Gameboy:
The Legend of Zelda: Links Awakening
That I forgot.

And Snickers I agree that Trespasser isn't much of a game... But I like it for trying out things that would later become the gravity gun (and huge-island games in general). Same thing about Red Faction. It made so little use of the ability to blow holes in walls it's ridiculous. No game came to replace their geo-mod idea with something more fleshed out, gameplay-wise. I hope HL3 will go into that direction.

Sorry I'm late... looks around What omegaslayer said (especially the part about EA sucking) >.>

I don't wanna rag on you, but I can't go without saying this:
*Both Halo and Halo2 are rated 10/10 in lots of Internet Sites and magazines. Look youre self.
Reviews for anything have to be taken with a grain of salt, especially something that had as much hype surrounding it's release as Halo 2. More hype usually means higher reviews, just because people tend to herd like sheep when there's something to herd around. I'm sure many of those reviewers had a blast playing Halo 2, but I think without all the hype there would have been less excitement in playing the game, and because of that lower (and "more accurate") reviews.

A good review is an objective, unbiased review. The video games is a fickle entertainment media, because the experience can (and does) vary drastically from one game to another, and what you like may not be someone else's cup o' tea.

From an objective standpoint a game boils down to mechanics, design (level/monster/challenge), and story. Halo 1 had excellent mechanics in most areas (the way the guns "feel" makes them fun to shoot; vehicle controls seem logical on an Xbox controller, and feel tight and responsive; I despise the floaty jumping though), hit-and-miss level design (some areas were quite well done, but many felt awkward and forced to me), great monster design (multiple strength levels to each type of Covenant allows the difficulty to ramp up as the game progresses, and new types of enemies are introduced at a good steady pace), really great challenge design (lots of different vehicle-based gameplay types spread nicely throughout the game gives the player a break from running around and shooting aliens all the time; the levels/chapters had satisfying conclusions that give a sense of accomplishment, and with each new chapter the difficulty drops from the climax of the previous chapter but not as far as the beginning of the previous chapter, an important part of making a game fun), and a fairly mediocre story IMHO, but it was engaging enough to keep me playing to the end (which very few video game stories do these days). I'd give Halo a 9/10, it's a really solid game that was a joy to play and finish, by no means perfect, but still very solid all around.

Halo 2 was less coherent, the levels seemed cobbled together, it was overall just less fun to me. I'd say Halo 2 was about a 6/10, but I didn't play it very much because it got boring pretty quick for me. If I got paid for it I would play it all the way through, but I'm probably not ever going to otherwise.

All that is possibly kind of dense and maybe confusing to read, if so I'm sorry. I'm should have gone to sleep a few hours ago, but I didn't so now I'm tired and rambling. Good night folks.

Ok Everybody Who in this fourm says halo is crap or dissagrees with the Facts. Or Whatever if u dont like the game. Tell me why. Give me reasons why Halo is s**ty. I would just like to hear why.

I have a freind who is full on hard core Nintendo Fan. He hated Halo. He hated Half-life. Hated everything that was not Nintendo. one day I went to his House and Installed Halo on His PC. I was playing it in front of him. At first he said it was boring and crappy. But then He asked for a go... To this veryday he stays up late plays the Game with His beer on his right side and Munchies on his left side and His xbox 360 controller he bought just for the game plugged into his laptop. He still likes Nintendo but is busting to play Halo2 and Halo3. So dont dis Halo until you've played it. I used to Hate it to. I thought It was Just a stupid shooter that was really crap. Than I went to a freinds house and He was playing Multiplayer with another freind. Now i have The game and Halo2 on xbox. I have a halo3 desktop and I'm currently downloading Halo CE so I can make custom maps and play them online. and Just yesterday I found an easteregg in Halo (Easter egg is a halo Secret. Just look up "halo eastereggs")

Trust me halo is much more than youre average Game. If you want to know whats so good about it either play it or research the game. But dont say its bad If you Haven't Played it. (Note The halo demo is s**t)

So if you hate the game, I want to hear why. Please

By the way I used to hate Halo2 as well. But there is soo much more depth and so much more story to tell and Its soo much better. You just Have to take time and top and Whatever you do, dont skip the cinimatics.

Halo2 Fact
*Did you know there used to be 120 minutes of cinimatics for halo2. Thats a whole Feature flim. But due to problems with space, More than Half the movies had to be cut out. What a shame. Halo2 rox

Aaron, if you say you like the game, you're perfectly right. Noone can say anything against it, and you're certainly not alone.

It almost feels like you want to "convert" us in a way and I think that's why people started all the negativity

Halo is praised as a Goldeneye of the 2000ands and I missed it. When I see people these days that never played Goldeneye (or say it sucks, that actually happens!) I feel like they missed something big. And I'd love to tell them about it but also know that Goldeneye was a phenomenon in the late 90ties that can't be explained today. My friends and I still enjoy a nice game of GE, thinking there's nothing better.

I feel a bit like Halo has become a genre-defining game of this decade and it hurts a bit thinking that I'll never feel like being a part of this gaming-generation. Hearing teenagers talk about Halo makes me feel like probably the Nes/Space Invaders generation felt when I told them about Goldeneye. It makes me feel old

I own both Halo games, but I've played so many FPS games prior that trying to play a console FPS was not interesting, the resolution is so bad that you can barely see what's going on on a TV. I personally don't like the feel of the game very much either, too much noob-style auto-aim feel. Even the PC version isn't much better, a lot of bugs, etc.

It's not in the bottom of the barrel of the games I own, it's "okay" but it certainly does not deserve a spot on my top 10. You can't call me biased against any single manufacturer, style of game or console (except N-Gage I guess, haha). I enjoy games of all types and varieties, but I don't enjoy games that are popular based on that merit.

I found going back and playing Goldeneye that it hadn't aged very well, same with Shadows of the Empire...I loved those way back when, but when I played them recently I was sorta disappointed.

Personally I think very highly of Halo and Halo 2.

When I play through a battle in HL2, FEAR, Doom 3, or the vast majority of shooters, if I come out of it with low health my first thought is to try it again. That pretty much means that the only "success" you can achieve is when you breeze through an area (something that is generally straightforward when you know enemy placement after a few practice runs). With Halo that concept goes out the window - if you survive an encounter, even by the skin of your teeth, then you are good to go because you'll be back on full health in a minute. It puts such a focus on taking cover during the heat of battle with momentary disregard for your safety; provided you get back behind some cover before you die, it doesn't MATTER that you took a load of hits during your all out attack. Its these alternating moments of action with moments of absolute tension as you hope to hell no covenant bastard is gonna peek round the cover while you are out of your armour that make the game so special.

Now don't get me wrong, both Halo 1 and Halo 2 are full of flaws and I wouldn't class either as my favourite games. That said, I think a lot of people fail to appreciate what the games do so well. They excel in terms of control (their auto-aim and analogue sensitivity are second to none), have better stories than most FPS games, feature solid and varied AI, and look great. Don't hate these games because you think they are poor console emulations of a genre that belongs on the PC - these are games that stand up against pretty much any FPS you can throw at them.

 I prefer fighting to the bitter end. I actually play better when the
health is low, I aim better, I find better cover, I dodge better. The
Halo series is a bit too console for me, but I must admit that the fist
Halo was pretty fun on 2 player coop. But ultimately I think that
FPSses belong to PC. All that auto-aim BS and small maps and lots of
loading screens... Not for me.

Fighting games on the other hand belong clearly to the console side.
It's a lot of fun to fire up DOA and get some beat 'em up action with
your friends.

In the end all my favorite games are on the PC side. Mouse and keyboard
can be used well in all sorts of games most of the time better than a
pad(yeah, I know that you can get pads for pcs too).

I just wish I had cash to get better comp for Supreme Commander... 2007 will be a good year.

South of Sydney not as far as Victoria though (no more details than that  ).

As for Halo, never liked it originally, but a mate brought it over on his Xbox 360 and played Co-op, was pretty fun.

i played Halo on xbox a few times and thought the same thing. co-op is fun, and overall it isn't a bad game, but i just hated those little enemies with their sounds that seemed to come right from Disney. what was the purpose, to add a cute element for kids? bah

My favorites(not in any order favored order, just some likeness of genre order):
(Halo talk after)

Half-life
-mods: Someplace else, they hunger, Minimicus, timefall, TFC, CS (at times), PQL, and issues.
Half-life 2
-mods: Minerva, Iron Grip, and im putting Black Mesa on this list even though its not public yet.

One of the reasons I love Half-life is the mods. the main games are really great on their own, but between the two of them and their mods i've gotten more then 200 hours of Quality gameplay.

Halo 1: like Reno said, the shield system made the game fun, and the weapons were somewhat unique.
Doom and Doom II: First things I mapped for back in 98, very fond memories
Marathon
Steel Batalion: its amazing what a massive 50 button custom controler does for an Xbox game with ok everthing else
Battlefield 1942
Goldeneye 64
Call of Duty 2
Metal of honor allied assault
Total Annihilation: The greatest RTS ever
SD Gundam X: Super Gatchapon World: Second best ever in my opinion. its a SNES game relesed only in japan, after seeing my friend play it I got it and spent an hour fiddleing to figureout what menu option does what. and I still play it to this day.
No Greater Glory: feels like your playing in 400x300 its so old. and I have yet to beat the CPU even on ultra easy
Rise of nations
C&C Tiberian sun
C&C Red alert 1&2
StarCraft: we all know it and love it
Warcraft: another blizzard classic
Populous The beggining: addicting
Age of Empires 1&2: not 3 tho, 3 was just bad
X-Com: and most of the series
Baulders gate 2
Arcanum: first RPG i ever played, still fun to play again
Blade of darkness: got it on the same demo CD as Arcanum came on, getting both was a wise investment
Betrayal at Krondor: and the rest of that series, it was just so darn addicting despite horrible graphics
Neverwinter knights
Dungon siege
Diablo series: <3
Fallout series: even bigger <3
KOTOR
Zelda Links awakening DX
Zelda A link to the past
Zelda Ocarania of Time
Deus ex
Falcon 4.0 allied forces: one of the few flight simulators that was fun.
Descent: awesome fun for hours upon end
Super Smash Brothers
Super Mario 64
Super Mario Cart
Super Mario World
Metal Gear and Metal Gear Solid
Final Fantasy 4-8
Chrono trigger
NoX
Lemmings
Asteroids
Tempest
Torus trooper
Twisted Metal
Super Mario Bros 2
Missle command
Hydro Thunder
Time Crisis 3
Shadow of the Colossus

and a few others I know I missed

Now on to Halo
*Halo2 Is the Most Played Xbox online game
this quote has been bugging me the entire time i've been writing this post. it doesn't say anything about halo, except that its owned by a high % of people who play Xbox. That doesn't make it a truely good game, since more people play CS and CS:S then have Xbox live accounts.

I still play halo sometimes, its fun, especially on legendary because its a challange. Halo was fun because of the shield which protected your health. Halo 2 runined that by taking out the health, so your shield was the only thing you had to go by. having health really added consequences to you messing up in Halo 1.

IMHO marathon was a better game. The plot was better developed. as opposed to Halo, which, while it had a good way of advancing the plot in Halo 1, dropped alot when halo 2 came around.

and I've done alot of digging about Halo 3. there aren't alot of secrets left for me to find out. it won't be much of a surprise to me anymore.

Ill tell you this about Halo 3, if you thought that anything about the other two was hit or miss, then halo 3 will blow you away or fizzle out into nothing. Bungie is all in on it.

and if you want an idea, think of putting Halo 1 and Marathon in a super colider with a dash of Half-life and Shadow of the colossus, and you have Halo 3 after some interactions that could destroy the entire thing.
