I am just on the bungie site right now and...

Check out Halo3. I am so looking foward to the game. I'm just looking at the 3 multiplayer images and my mouth has never been so widely opened. Just get your ass onto www.bungie.net and check out the greatest game in the works. no offense half-life.

Halo 1 was mostly good, Halo 2 was party good, and I'm not expecting big things from number three.

Apart from being fun with 4 guys mashed trying to play, it's not that great.

Those screens aren't particularly impressive, to be honest. I don't see anything better than say Gears of War, visually. Halo is a great game, don't get me wrong, and I'm looking forward to Halo3. That said, nothing can beat the character and immersion that Halflife 2 offers, but that's just my opinion

You're not going to blow your load all over the forums every time a new Halo game comes out are you? Because as I hear, there's many planned in the pipe-line and this will get old. Fast. a.k.a. Now.

both halos were decent, but they got old in single-player IMO.
I thought HL2 was much better in the single player experience and the multiple free multiplayer games and mods made it even better. The screenies
look decent, I'm sure I'll prolly get it, but I'm not counting the days or anything.

Good art is way more important than how powerful the graphics engine is. Gameplay is more important than either. To me, from what I've seen, Halo 3 looks like Halo 2 with more polys and higher-res textures. Bungie hasn't grown into new tech well IMO, all the environments consist mostly of simple shapes with random detail tacked on so it isn't quite as boring to look at.

Don't get us wrong, we liked Halo 1, I personally thought Halo 1 broke
a lot of grond in terms of AI and fluid gameplay. But so did Half Life
1 with its fluid gameplay and inteligent AI....4 years before halo came
out.

Halo 2 broke the fluid gameplay that Halo 1 had and replaced it with an
incomplete "dual weapon" system. Halo 2 also took the skill out of the
game that Halo 1 had (it no longer takes skill to hit a moving ghost,
now any 6 year old - like you - can kill anyone with one shot). They
stripped the weapons that made Halo 1 fun, and altered the graphics
system (I still see bugs in Halo 2 where a mariene will completely
disappear because of the bumpmaps). Halo 2 also gave a new meaning to
repeditive gameplay.

Half Life 2 was the first game to introduce an actual physics system
that made tossing toilets at combine fun. While HL2 was short IMO, it
still gives combat situations that never get old (you can always play
the same situation over and over in different ways). And with HL2's
modding capabilities, then game will never really get old.

Now for Halo 3. There isnt much that we can say quite yet from a few
shots, but I can only hope that bungie will take a step back and look
at what made Halo 1 great and re-introduce it back into Halo 3. We can
only hope.

They've had that style ever since Oni, so it's not like they're growing much at all, in terms of style. Personally, I kinda like the huge, impressive environments, and the relatively low level of detail lets you focus on the combat which is a good thing for Halo's gameplay. The repetetiveness is a big no for me though, both the copied corridors and the overload of similar enemy encounters.

Haven't played Halo2 though, and as long as it doesn't come out on the PC I won't, either. I can't stand the console controls.

I really enjoyed both Halo games, and I've no doubt I'll get a lot of enjoyment out of Halo 3 too. It looks good from the screenshots, but not jaw droppingly gorgeous or anything like that. I think the terrain could use a bit of smoothing out, and the grass being simply a flat texture with no geometry/sprites to give it depth doesn't really cut it these days.

What bothered me about Halo on PC was not just the fact that the maps had little detail, but the fact that the games performance was really low even with sparsely detailed maps. Even on a machine that ran HL2 fine, Halo was barely playable.

I tried it again recently and it runs fine now. Though my machine is exponentially more powerful than my previous one. It was really a give and take port. Sometimes it would run fine other times it would run terribly.

I think, Gearbox added some extra stuff that really bogged the performance down (for example: blooms). They probably didn't have much of an opportunity to really optimize the engine for PC platform. Since then, the engine has been tuned up, you can see an example of this with Stubbs the Zombie which runs on Halo's engine.

I just think the game it self was mediocre in general. I always hear about this amazing storyline and garbage ... but if it didn't make the game ... who cares?

Halo is the new doom. Beige weapons, beige levels, beige storyline. I
guess i'm in the minority in thinking that the Halo 3 screenshots look
exactly like Halo 1?

I don't get why the hell you guys are impressed with the graphics. They look very bland in terms of texture variation and brush detail. UT2k4 looks better and it's almost 3 years old. And Halo 3 looks like it has the same tiny, boring vehicles that Halo 1 had.

Now... compare the Halo 3 screenshots to these hi-res screenies of UT2K7 (click the medium shot for a 1600x1200 one):
http://www.silentlightning.net/gallery/thumbnails.php?album=12

I mean, there is no comparison, UT2k7 freaking mauls it.

As for gameplay, I'll take Onslaught mode in UT over the CTF stuff in Halo any day (which UT has anyway...). And PC games like UT always have a ton more content- right out of the box, from the community, and from Epic's great FREE bonus packs that they make.

PC Gaming FTW!

Jinx,
UT2k7 is going to kill everything. Mmmm..... particle based water, I hear?
Plus you're not going to have to compile maps to test them.. you can do it right in the editor (I wish Hammer was that way.. or at least rendered lighting and such in the 3d view).

Also, they replaced Onslaught, Bombing Run, and Double Domination with a new mode.. I think it's called Unreal War. There are new vehicles for it and the maps are supposed to be three to four times bigger than the Onslaught maps were.

There's even more stuff, but you can see all that on their website.
Although, I'm sure anyone interested the new Unreal has already seen it.

As far as I'm concerned, the Halo titles skipped over PC completely considering the PC version was just a bad console port. They both were "meh" anyway. I'm looking forward to not caring.

PS. UT2K4 was one of, if not, THE bomb.

Ugh. So glad I got the DVD version

Don't forget downloading all the bonus packs, too, with the tasty new vehicles and maps. My UT2k4 folder is about 6GB, but it's one game I keep coming back to periodically so it has earned its place on my hard drive.

I guess I always bring UT2k4 up in Halo discussion because of obvious comparison you can make between the multiplayer and the vehicles. I've heard the 1player Halo stuff is really good, not to mention the co-op. But for sheer multiplayer goodness, UT2k4 seems like the clear winner. I got bored of Halo multiplayer after about a week and was trying to get my friends to go back and play Goldeneye instead :x

I didn't get to pick the version I got. I was involved with the youth program in Tom Savini's college (in my hometown) and in a class they gave it to me for free. I didn't complain.

I never got any of the bonus packs. I could never find anyone that actually played. I don't like games that none of my friends play.. except Quake III, because I get bored not talking to anyone. Sometimes, I'd come across people that were cool, but most of the time it was just another player.

Goldeneye is kick ass. I just download the alpha Goldeneye: Source, but it crashed when I tried to start a game and I haven't felt like messing with it yet.

I really need to fix this 250gb HDD sitting on my computer desk. It'd be so nice to fill up.

Unfortunately, you have to sell your house to buy a system capable of running UT2007.

But honestly, I was quite under-impressed by the UT7 trailer I saw. Hover boards where cool in the 80ies, fun in the 90ies but look seriously ridiculous in 2007. The changes to gameplay seem to consist of making vehicles bigger and weapon effects more shiny.

Also I haven't seen much of those beautiful meadows they had in some of the earlier screens. I liked those a lot.
Why snark works.

Unfortunately, I'm probably going to put way too much money into it and I'll probably have to sell a kidney or something else sort of important. I bet I can get even more money for a lung!

So glad I got the DVD version
Editor's Choice Edition has a bonus DVD with a whole slew of 3D Buzz video tutorials on modding UE2 (including some really good Maya VTMs)
That's the one I always wanted.

My brother was into Red vs Blue over a year ago.
However, since I'm not really a Halo fanatic, I never got interested in watching them.
