Definitely FPS. Simulators like IL-2 Sturmovik are fun too. I dont have uber micro in RTS, I find racing games get boring quickly, same with RPGs.

I do not believe that I have a favorite anymore. I have evolved from this to that over the years but nothing really sticks out any more.

Back when Civ 2 came out it was definitely that type. I bought almost every game you could name from then from Colonization to Sim City. Then I slid into games like Generals. Battle strategy has its own appeal. Then Doom caught me for a while and I bought almost every 1st person there was. Almost literally every 1st person there was. Then Half-Life caught my attention and held it. Yes still first person but with a story. Games like Unreal caught me for a bit, but I lost interest fast.

I have about 200 titles. Not a single one for anything non-PC. My children play those. I watch. I shake my head and leave. Its so sad.

I suppose I will have to vote "Other" simply because there seems no other option for people without "1" favorite. There are simply to many great titles to sanctify 1 all encompassing favorite.

I can't help but feel that by ignoring consoles you are missing out on
plenty of games you may well enjoy Underdog - it's not a definition
that all console games are bad, they aren't guilty by association with
the systems :smile: What games do your kids play that brings on this
distaste, and what age are they?

I don't think I could possibly choose from the above, as my favourite
games have come from a wide variety of genres. From RPGs there is FFVII
and Vagrant Story, action/adventures provide Ico and Res Evil,
racing games such as PGR and Burnout, hell even sports games can be
done so well as to reach my list - just look at Jet Set Radio and
Amped. Nope, I just love good games, the genre isn't really of much
concern.

I know you mean well, and in the end you are most probably correct. What you need understand is, I already spend 100's of dollars each year on games I know I like. Expanding isn't an option that would entertain idly.

I could probably go into their room and dig out a few titles. I won't because its really not part of the equation IMO. In yours perhaps but not mine.

On a brighter note. They are now old enough to buy their own titles so, part of the 100's I used to spend, can now be shift directly to me.

Sorry to not clarify that sooner, but it always irked me to buy a game I couldn't/wouldn't ever play. Maybe thats the base reason for my strong dislike of the type. I do not know.

Hehe, I can imagine it must be quite horrible to have to split your
games budget :biggrin: Mine is smaller than I'd like as it is - I hope if I
have kids that they like the same games I do!

As close minded as many may believe me to be, I could never bring myself to impose my gaming likes upon my children. I didn't buy them everything they wanted, but I did buy them everything i could afford.

All I did do was teach them the morals necessary to instill upon them that games are exactly that. I read to many articles that blamed games on violence in our youth. I wanted to forestall any of that in my offspring.

For me, it's FPS all the way. Whenever I ventured into another type of game, I was always disappointed. Besides, I usually play games when I get back from work. And after spending the whole day dealing with demanding parents and screaming babies, I don't really want to use my head to think anymore.

All I am looking for is some mindless action and meaningless violence. Sounds scary, but it's very therapeutic indeed.

RTS and FPS. Though just as with music my taste isn't completely
pinpointed on just one or two genres, I like those type of games most.
I like the action in FPS and the building and strategic elements of
RTS. I liked Rollercoaster for that aspect, too... :biggrin:

Mr. Reno and I have a disagreement. It will not grow beyond that unless someone else decides to make it so. I for one think we both had valid points. Most might think only one of us had, but who's the bigger man for it?

I am a bit touchy of late because every other post has someone complaining that they either failed to comprehend, or desires that I be more forth coming in my reasoning. Neither should be a requirement. Either would be nice I agree since I fail on many occasions to comprehend why you guys think "this and that" but in most of those I figure if I was meant to understand everything, I wouldn't be in a silly game forum. I'd be doing something with those brain cells.

Its not a requirement to understand always. Stop asking me to make it so.

But this is the beauty of it all. If more people, including you, would interject things like this into the conversation instead of going on the offensive we would have more harmony. We wouldn't have any more agreements, but we would have less people feeling like a cornered rat.

I always strive to be the peacemaker. I think it might have something to do with my occupation--trying to make things right.

Once, when I was at a paintball arena, a couple of people shot a bunch of girls at point blank range. Their boyfriends got really pissed off, and a heated confrontation ensued.

I don't know either parties, but I intervened when someone threatened to go to his car and bring out a loaded handgun. It may be fool-hardy of me, but I persuaded them to back down. I just didn't want to see people getting killed over a paintball game.

I think this proves one thing:

racing games suck.

FPS are good, FarCry to this date is still the best looking FPS in my opinion. Although I do have 1 thing to say which almost everyone (KFS may agree with me) will disagree with.

Consoles will always be better than PC's. This is because the games are tailored to the console. Remember how crap Halo looked compared to Xbox, based on hardware comparison.

Racing games DO suck, yet. Both my brothers love them though, and I tend to be forced into playing them on occasion.

Reno, Satch and Underdog, can we just dumb things down a little? At
least if you guys were spamming and flaming, I wouldn't be drawn into
actually reading all of your posts. Overintellectualising (doubt its a
word) is a strange problem on snarkpit. On most forums the problem is
someone being stupid in a serious debate, here its the reverse; a
thread on ass scratching techniques can become a heated debate on
existentialism in like two or three posts!

Totally off topic, its my birthday, but don't see the point in making a back slapping thread again.

I voted other because I have favourites in most genres. I don't see the
point in playing 10 different FPS, or 10 different RPGs, I like
diversity, so I can't actually box myself into any of those categories.

Anyway, to make my lost post short. If you read Mephs post above you will note that except the part:"I vote other..." most of the rest made no sense whatsoever. It doesn't need clarifying because I am betting that he knew exactly what he meant.

The biggest issue I have from this site is, way to many people desire clarification. Its not bad in moderation but anything can be over done. What few of you even consider is, just because I didn't ask you to clarify something didn't necessarily mean I understood it.

In many cases, its only as important as the individuals who want to fight about it make it become.

Mr. Reno and I disagreed. I would hope he feels the same now about me as he did prior to posting today. Be that good or bad is irrelevant. The discussion stayed within the boundaries of normal two way communication. At least IMO it did.

Its sad when you think about it. We did not need peace makers in most, if not all of the past ordeals.

If I upset you Reno, I sincerely apologize.

I don't think there is a genre I don't enjoy in some respect or from at least one game.

It's hard to understand something if the person gives no reasons - if
the person explains their position then the confusion need not be so
common. It's in a lot of people's nature to want to understand things,
particularly when it relates to their area of interest or expertise.
For instance, as games development is my current career of choice, of
course I want to know why people would have negative stigma against
consoles.

I don't want to harp on about this topic, but I was genuinely
interested in why you thought of consoles as stupid - it's the sort of
comment I've read a thousand times in random comments on game news
sites and what not, but I've yet to really see a justification for that
opinion. I don't mind that you think that or that you prefer PC
gaming, but it baffles me that anybody could like games on the PC yet
find the idea of a dedicated gaming system stupid. I'm gonna shut up
now, and I have no expectations for you to reply to this as you have
already stated you do not wish to, but I hope it goes some way toward
explaining why I, perhaps over aggressively, wanted the reasons behind
your opinion of consoles.

I also just wanted to state that I didn't drag the argument over to
this thread - Underdog hadn't replied to my reply in the other when I
posted here, and I don't even think there was any hint of "argument" in
this thread personally.

On topic - Shoot em' up should possibly be replaced by "Action", given
that there are plenty of action games out there that don't involve
shooting (and it could even extend to beat em' ups then) :wink:

What if its simply a case of, I cannot put it into words? At least not simply words.

I prefer the games I mentioned (which ever thread that was, I cannot remember)

I play only those kinds. I play them on my PC. I have attempted to play the same games a few times, when I can locate a title thats the same (IE Doom,Quake,Etc,etc) and the game is never as enjoyable.

It could be that I should pick an original title and try from scratch, but then we get to my second issue which is the controller. As fancy as they have gotten, they are still basically the original Nintendo type apparatus. There could be, and may very be other types of controllers, but the simple fact is, I love the keyboard/mouse procedure of play.

Thirdly, although I do not use my PC for anything but games, the fact remains I could if I chose to. I already have spent 1,000's upon 1,000's since I got my very first computer. I really do not want to expand further.

Lastly, although I love computer games, I do not agree that all are good fun. For instance, not to contradict Mr. Myrk, but I hate Farcry. Its silly, its graphics are not nearly as phenomenal as people claim and the maps are not to my taste. Not exactly horribly made, I just didn't favor them, as opposed to say a comparably made Unreal 2 map. Perhaps I favor the futuristic over the beach comber.

The bottom line is, I have no satisfactory answer for you. My answer suits me perfectly, but there is still the chance that my answer still leaves you baffled.

I would also like to mention. My children used to play nothing but mindless driving games. Something or other L.A. something. (its an old title and probably put away where I cannot find it) They are not here now, so I cannot ask. The point is, driving over people wantonly just doesn't do it for me.

Their current favorites are, Phantom Dust, Burnout 3 and Halo 2. ( I peeked on the desk)

I watched them play these three titles. Burnout sucks, its a driving game after all. :rolleyes: Halo 2? The maps look more blocky than HL1. With so much power at their disposal, why are the maps so ugly. Phantom Dust. I am reserving judgment. It looks interesting but the 3rd person perspective drives me nuts.

So there you are. If this extended reason doesn't suit you as adequate, I have no more to add cause, I do not have more to add. I am not avoiding your question, I just have no other reason.

Thank God no one voted for racing games! I hate racing games! They are
soo boring and repetitive, just riding around a track for hours! I like
Simulators because:

• Im creative

• I like seeing my creation "simulating" :biggrin:

• You cant get stuck in them

• I like running my own bussiness/city sorta thing

• I like discovering new things

• I like using my brain ^
• I get addicted to them

And so and so forth...

My favriote simulators are SimCity, ZooTycoon and Transport Tycoon.

I hate civilization! I got civ3 and I got bored quite soon!

At the momemt ive been playing Transport Tycoon Deluxe. Old but awsome/addictive!

I like some racing games, stuff I particularly like in them are secret
routes, believable and immersive environments (both found in NFSHP2 :smile: )
and a good rock-tune on the background really gets me going.

What I don't like about them is that racing often gets easier and
easier when you've done it a few times and in the end, it just comes
down to having a good tuned car which is fast and controllable. That's
where it gets boring for me. In other words: lack of fresh new assets in the end.

i like The Sims, never played Sims City.

What would something like Syndicate fall into? I remember loving

Actually, I like racing games - I actually have the original demo of Need for Speed from 1994 or whenever it was (!).

I also like first person shooters (which may explain why I'm here) and shooter-racers like Interstate '76 (Interstate '82 sucks though).

Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit was a very very fun game (as far as I can
remember). But obviously, my favorite game type is FPS. I
just find I'm best at them.

If you're gonna play a racing game, play Test Drive. It's the only one worth playing.

FPS = First Person Shooter.

That's what I'm talking about. Test Drive 1. The original from 1987. There just havn't been any racing games to top that one.

Top Gear for SNES. Best racing game along with the Gran Turismo series.

i like NFS Underground 1, NFSU2 isn't that exciting.

i liked the first THPS on 64 but didnt play much of the others

I've never ventured outside of shooters, so I am a bit torn right now when a friend of mine is asking me to join them in Guild Wars.

I am not sure about it. He showed me his characters, but I am still engrossed in mapping and tuning my nav mesh for cs:s.
