Ok, seriously. Take a look at how Kouichirou Taninami of Capcom has 're-envisioned' CS for the Japanese audience. I don't know what's scarier: whether someone gets paid for warping a game so far beyond its essence, or whether people will want to play it.

I'm sorry but, I see no issues. If they want to edit it to "feel" more Japanese, I say go for it.

It isn't as if the Japanese do not have their own version of a counter-strike outfit in their military so its only a given that they would want an oriental version of a popular genre.

HLDM wasn't designed to be played in a box yet it has, so if they want to refine the CS game to appeal to the Japanese public I see no reason why they cannot.

The best things in life, aren't things.

Apparantly Japanese are quite different gamers. They don't seem to like 'our' CS just as we don't like 'theirs'.

Well, definitely a good example that stresses the importance of knowing your public.

It's fine that they wanted their own version of it. That's business. But it's not Counter-Strike. CS is all about gritty, realistic, modern combat. You don't give the characters a gay anime makeover AND remove the "anti-terrorism angle" and still call it CS. Even single-player missions and mini-games only deviate more from the simplicity of the game. I'm all for the Japanese playing a round-based team dm game, but come on. Artistic integrity just doesn't occur to some people, I guess.

The point of gaming is fun. Even I admit that much. I absolutely hate killboxes and will ridicule one at every turn, but I wouldn't remove the option of being permitted to make and/or play one. Thats just insane.

If the Japanese want a watered down version, who's to say its watered down?

I dunno. I am not omnipresent but, if its enjoyable to them they should be able to do so.

I have seen nearly every country you can name online, but never an oriental. Tells you something. They are the creators of many a titles and yet, we never see them.

Bottomline. The can play it with blow darts and tutu's if thats their idea of CS.

The best things in life, aren't things.

And there could be like a Crips vs Bloods CS game too!!

I think the problem is that they're calling it CS but it's not. That would be like calling HL2 Super Mario Bros simply because Dog's model was repclaced with Luigi.

Yeah its the Garg and the Tentacles from Blast Pit and Surface Tension.

Anyway -- I don't really see a problem with localizing a game.
Artistic Integrity doesn't really come into it because first of all
Valve agreed to it, and it's not like the original product is being
completely replaced all around the world. If you like the
original you can still play it over here. It just makes sense to
have a Japanese version of a game for the Japanese -- as the language
and culture are so completely different from the western world. I
mean, think about the GUI. Japanese read right to left, so
wouldn't the HUD need to be changed for their comfort?

I was half right. Traditionally they read right to left, but not anymore.
wiki said:
Traditionally, Japanese is written in a format called tategaki.
In this format, the characters are written in columns going from top to
bottom, with columns ordered from right to left. After reaching the
bottom of each column, the reader continues at the top of the column to
the left of the current one. This copies the column order of Chinese.

Modern Japanese also uses another writing format, called yokogaki.
This writing format is identical to that of European languages such as
English, with characters arranged in rows which are read from left to
right, with successive rows going downwards.
They definitely read comics and stuff back to front though.

Its not a bulls**t article... well, maybe it is, I haven't read it, but CS:Neo is real. It was developed as an arcade type game a fair while back,or at least I saw a gameplay trailer for it a fair while ago. I think its a fairly legitimate thing to do, given that the original version would have pretty much no appeal to the Japanese audience.

Andrei, are you sure the article wasn't just referring to PC games? The Japanese games industry is far and away dominated by consoles after all.

No, no, no. The whole idea of CS:Neo is a f**king nightmare. If they replaced all the characters in Final Fantasy with the cast of Half-Life and got rid of the whole fantasy setting it would be EVEN GAYER. And it would not be Final Fantasy. That's what bugs me. I don't mind the porting, just the completely different game.

Your right, it would be worse if they did it to Final Fantasy or something, because in those games the characters and environment actually matter. As far as I'm concerned, CS is pretty much devoid of character. That doesn't mean it isn't a good game or I don't like it, it just means that it is hardly renowned for its charm, story, or setting. I mean, just look at the amount of people playing s**t like Iceworld right? CS is essentially abstracted from any sort of universe (though obviously it attempts to reside within the real world style) - the scenarios it presents are entirely self-enclosed and don't contribute to some overall consistant "game universe", at least not very successfully. As such I really don't feel bad about seeing the gameplay being seperated from the scenario like this.

Artistic integrity just doesn't occur to some people, I guess.
Artistic integrity is in the eye of the beholder. Obviously, the Japanese have a much different version of 'integrity' and 'art' than you do. You can't knock them for it, just as they can't knock you for liking what you like. I don't see the problem with this.... why get bent out of shape over someone elses artistic preference. It's not like they are changing YOUR version of countersrike.

I definitely agree with ReNo, just look at all the crazy gametypes that
have emerged from what once was pure vanilla CS that no longer fit with
the "counter-terrorism" theme. Surf maps are a perfect example of
this divorce of gameplay and scenario.

Whoever told you Japan is CS's main consumer is wrong/lying - that simply isn't true to any extent. As a general rule, western games do not do well in Japan - they make plenty themselves to keep themselves occupied and the culture generally clashes with anything we in the west put out. On top of that they aren't into FPS games in a big way whatsoever - note the almost complete lack of Japanese FPSs.
