I'm sorry but, I see no issues. If they want to edit it to "feel" more Japanese, I say go for it.
It isn't as if the Japanese do not have their own version of a counter-strike outfit in their military so its only a given that they would want an oriental version of a popular genre.
HLDM wasn't designed to be played in a box yet it has, so if they want to refine the CS game to appeal to the Japanese public I see no reason why they cannot.

It's fine that they wanted their own version of it. That's business. But it's not Counter-Strike. CS is all about gritty, realistic, modern combat. You don't give the characters a gay anime makeover AND remove the "anti-terrorism angle" and still call it CS. Even single-player missions and mini-games only deviate more from the simplicity of the game. I'm all for the Japanese playing a round-based team dm game, but come on. Artistic integrity just doesn't occur to some people, I guess.

The point of gaming is fun. Even I admit that much. I absolutely hate killboxes and will ridicule one at every turn, but I wouldn't remove the option of being permitted to make and/or play one. Thats just insane.
If the Japanese want a watered down version, who's to say its watered down?
I dunno. I am not omnipresent but, if its enjoyable to them they should be able to do so.
I have seen nearly every country you can name online, but never an oriental. Tells you something. They are the creators of many a titles and yet, we never see them.
Bottomline. The can play it with blow darts and tutu's if thats their idea of CS.

it's interesting though that the korean exchange student at my school says that everyone in Asia plays CS it seems
but whatever it's not really a big deal to me

I think the problem is that they're calling it CS but it's not. That would be like calling HL2 Super Mario Bros simply because Dog's model was repclaced with Luigi.

See, now I can imagine Goombas jumping at my face; helicopters would be Spike on his cloud throwing spinys everywhere.
Blame it on Microsoft, God does.

Yeah its the Garg and the Tentacles from Blast Pit and Surface Tension.
Anyway -- I don't really see a problem with localizing a game.
Artistic Integrity doesn't really come into it because first of all
Valve agreed to it, and it's not like the original product is being
completely replaced all around the world. If you like the
original you can still play it over here. It just makes sense to
have a Japanese version of a game for the Japanese -- as the language
and culture are so completely different from the western world. I
mean, think about the GUI. Japanese read right to left, so
wouldn't the HUD need to be changed for their comfort?

Yeah, but as ReNo said it's all console games that you've listed. As far as PC games go, the western world is on top.

No, no, no. The whole idea of CS:Neo is a f**king nightmare. If they replaced all the characters in Final Fantasy with the cast of Half-Life and got rid of the whole fantasy setting it would be EVEN GAYER. And it would not be Final Fantasy. That's what bugs me. I don't mind the porting, just the completely different game.

I definitely agree with ReNo, just look at all the crazy gametypes that
have emerged from what once was pure vanilla CS that no longer fit with
the "counter-terrorism" theme. Surf maps are a perfect example of
this divorce of gameplay and scenario.

i've been very skeptical towards this article anyway because, to my
knowledge, Japan is the #1 consumer (wrong word) of counter-strike

Wouldn't that be one more reason to want their own CS?
