So Nintendo has changed the name of their new console from "Nintendo Revolution", to the "Nintendo Wii". Most people seem to think its a ridiculous name judging from message boards and news page comments, and I agree. Revolution was a great name and suited the console perfectly, but Wii? It just seems awkward to me. What do the rest of you think?

It would depend on what the "Wii" stood for IMO.

It might be a perfectly appropriate acronym that harmonizes with "Nintendo"

shrugs

Its just a console, so its no great loss. Could be Nintendopedo for all I care. :heee:

I doesn't stand for anything - its the actual name, not an acronym  It sounding like "we" is meant to symbolise the fact that its all about playing together, encouraging social interaction, etc... In the logo, the double i (ii) is meant to look like two people together, as well as looking quite like the new controllers they designed for the console. The name is also meant to be global - its easy for people all over the world to say apparently. I think most Westerners are too busy making puns about "wee" to take the name seriously.

When I first heard about the 'Google' search engine, I thought it sounded like a joke.

The shock value of this name, will 1. garner alot of attention 2. not hurt Nintendo sales 3. Wear off very quickly.

And... no one will ever forget such a simple and striking name.

Even though it sounds odd, I think i see their angle and it will probably work out just fine.

"Google" has a lot of meaning behind it... I wonder if "Wii" does, or
whether it was just designed by the marketing goons to sound all modern
and community and "Web 2.0" like, or something. The explanation they
gave sadly points to the latter, but hopefully will have more reason
behind it evenutally.

And besides, it sounds like a cheap ripoff of Intel's Viiv...

PS: I'm posting again! Yay!

Imo it sounds completely ridiculious. I
know its been "officially" announced but it sounds like some jokey PR
trick before E3. Or maybe I just want that to be the case  Either way, its got everyone talkin about it and thats probably the point

Revolution sounds better ... but is pompus. Wii ... sounds ridiculous. But, would have to be the most original name Nintendo has ever put out. Also, is it going to be called Wii just outside Japan? Or what? Because, the NES and stuff was actually "Family Computer" etc.

But, then again, usually Nintendo has terrible development names. Ultra 64, Dolphine ... so on and so forth.

Apparently, also, Sega-Hudson Soft authorized that Nintendo can include the catalogs of Sega Genesis and TurboGrafix 16 to be included for download on the Revol ... wii system.

I agree on that. Since a decade Nintendo is making the most innovative game hardware and I love their logos (N64, GC, DS...). Wii looks and sounds very likable... maybe a bit too short. Just think of a kid saying "Wanna play a round on the Wii?".

I think they should just call it "nintendo." Anything else they put after it will just sound too "something"

in the case of "wii" replace the word "something" with "lame"

Somehow, the sarcasm, which normally drips liberally, is diminished with the nasty browser crap included.

I think I like the normal sarcasm better Cass.

Ditch the crappy browser, at least until Lep alters Snarkpit to accommodates its shortfalls.

It would never sell Forceman. 1st off, it wouldn't be politically correct as it would cut out a rather large portion of the gamers who are vaginally impaired. Secondly, the female population couldn't tolerate a vagina, thats played with more often than theirs.

Honestly, if Nintendo delivers what they say they will I really don't care what it's called. It could be called Nintendo Analubtion, I wouldn't really care.

And to be honest, Wii, as crappy of a name as it may be might just be the most original name big N has come up with.

I think Sega always had the awesome names anyway. (Genesis, Master System, MSX - wish this was released in the US, DreamCast, Saturn, GameGear ... awesome)

Hmm I don't think it's that bad. Xbox might be the dullest name ever for console. Playstation sounds like a 70ies mainframe terminal. Wii can compete with that at least it sounds like something new. I wish they kept revolution, though.

Because Terminator and Annihilator have exceedingly violent connotations that don't fit with the Nintendo ethos. That, and they don't suggest anything about the product. Revolution was a great fit for what the system is about - making big changes in the way we play games.

I liked the name Revolution. Wii works too though. As they say: "Any publicity is good publicity." I doubt many people are going to hinge their console purchasing decision on the name, and now it's being talked about again.... I'm not saying this was a marketing ploy to keep people from forgetting about Nintendo's next-gen console, just that it has had that effect
