Unbreakable, I wouldn't be so sure as not many of the old members have
taken part. Besides certain level of strict fairness is part of

I can vouche for this. I cannot guarantee that a new comer will win just because they are new. This isn't an affirmative action site after all.

I took on this job to ensure fairness. You may not know me well enough to be comfortable with that, but I am sure by the end of the competition you will be more so.

I have a question though, do we have separate vote for HL1 and HL2 maps?

As previously stated. If there are enough entries to warrant it, there will be separate votes. The only issue to resolve is, "How many is enough?"

I would like to say, yesterday when I posted the photos in the art forum, my 9800 pro video card fried.

I will be needing another card before I can even do anything else.

New screens, same areas, keeping you up to date :o

Really unsure about the central area, need to do more research before
developing an idea there... but the back is basically done, as seen in
this next shot, along with it's side aisles. The entrance wont be
accesible but you'll probably get a peak if you walk up to the clip.
Work on the 2 remaining sides to be shown soon

I don't think anyone is ignoring you, more... Yeah, its ignoring.

And, Spirit is OK by me, as long as you confirm that spirit still works with Steam.

I do not think anyone would be willing to install a non-steam mod, just to look at your map.

I would also suggest you post links to spirit so people can obtain it. Assuming it still works with steam.

It's not bad at all. I havent got many suggestions based on that one screenshot. it's pretty natural looking for HL1, not too many repetitions, just a nice random rock formation. Only thing i can think of would be to make the upper rockwall less flat, but thats personal choice maybe. Here's how i made rocks in HL1.

ppl are going to comment more when you show them more

Mr. INSANE: I like it mostly,
but those blue lights seem a bit too blue for me. Perhaps you should
consider using one of the other blue lights in halflife.wad like
~LIGHT5A or make the lightcolor more "whiter". Also you could try
different corners for those trims like a 45 degree angle. And it might
be wise to rotate those trim textures on the surfaces that share that
grid brush 90 or 270 degrees. To me they seem to be pointing up. Once
again you don't need to do change anything I pointed out, but take my
words into consideration.

@ Mr.INSANE:
Pvt. Scythe - Thank you for commenting the blue lights look good to me i will try a slightly whiter color but overall im happy with them. The trim texture does indeed look weird no idea why though
1) Your map keeps getting better with every new screenshot you post.

2) As for the blue lights, I think the reason they look off is not because the texture is too blue, but because the light they emit is too white. There is a big disconnect between the color of the light fixture, and the surroundings that are being hit by its light, and it is the disconnect that looks weird. I'd either bump up the blue value for that light in your lights.rad, or make the texture less blue.

3) Think about really going in and texturing the ceiling carefully, maybe adding some trims and aligning everything.

4) The metal grating on the floor is a great idea (no pun intended), but instead of having it flush with the concrete floor, maybe recess it down a couple units to give a depth change (so the grating level is centered in the depth of the surrounding trim, if that makes any sense).

5) Align the warning texture on the rails so that the yellow stripes wrap around the bar.

6) If you want, consider throwing in one of those big spider-like machine loader models from the half-life introduction sequence. Your map looks like a place where it would be right at home.

7) In general the lighting is subtle and good.
@Snpbond:
Here's my entry, still working on it but I hope you thing it looks good so far
1) Light is too blue. Generally the hard light should be more white or yellowish, and the shadows should be more blueish IMO. Also its pretty dark.

2) You could really improve that broken column by making the broken ends displacement surfaces and manipulating them so it looks like the column actually broke (right now it looks like someone sliced it with a saw - the break is too clean). Like in the following picture:

Ok, I did do some vertex manipulation but you cant see it from that angle...

The lighting, I could take that into consideration but the scene is set at night, I thought a blue moon was good?

Finally the darkness...people told me this before and I lightened it, I fear that if I lighten it anymore it will look like day and not night...on my monitor it looks great (LCD and darkened already)

Snp Bond I tend to ignore comments about it being to dark on a Competition map if its just basicly a scene then thats how it should look. If this was say some sort of DM map i would have it brighter but obviously its not

the lighting in your screenshot is very nice IMO

Even so people overplay Lighting when it comes to darkness brightness I belive darkness gives you a reason to use the flashlight. And in some areas darkness can kick ass Example AVP2 Is a good idea of how a flashlight and flares help you

...Thats enough rambling

MazeMaster I fixed the blue lights dropped the grate aligned the hazard stuff and tried the loader model unfortanetly its way to big and i would rather it have shadows. Also i aligned the roof texture

Good idea, however the scene I created was ment to be set in an abandoned prison, you ment the lights right? I only wanted 'natural' light in the scene

shouldn't affect it too much. Anyway, screens:

If you compiled it at some point there's a .map file somewhere. You can
load it up on Hammer and save it in .rmf form and you'll be back on
track in no time.

The 30th of June, and Gwil was going to get a Gmail account setup.

IMO, as long as the map is available to all before the 30th, I see no problem hosting it yourself.

I would like to ascertain exactly how many entrants we have by say, the last week if possible.

I won't be entering either due to lack of time on my part  (unless
of course we're allowed to post rooms that will be part of other,
larger projects. If so then I might just be able to get a little
something into the contest...for the fun of it, ofc, since some of the work displayed here is way beyond my skillz).

I particularly like the pillar style, though they look perhaps too weak to hold the office-structure above it. It's all very sketchy now, I'm experimenting a bit with meta-detail so to say, creating a large and impressive environment without too much small detail right now.
Comments or idea's on how to take this further? I like to explore this clean white concrete/black metal/glass style some more...

I was talking to Andy, Cappy.

I like the architecture TBH.

Its not actually unique but the texture application makes it seem so.

You know, now that I think about it, it looks like a dam I saw once.. If I could only remember where. Did you get this idea from a real site perhaps?

No, actually some buildings from Tiberian Sun inspired me and after some sketching I came up with various elements I could use. These sketches were first meant for a RTS environment, but I figured with some changes they could make for a nice FPS environment as well.

Looking very good dewdle.

Perhaps throw some more light at that circular symbol above the door? It looks like it could use some more attention.

Orpheus, I tried making a poll, but for some reason, it has to refer to a map of mine, which I have none.

So, I was thinking you could post one.

It would be for those who want to stay anonymous until the competition ends.

2 example options:
Entering with a Source map.
Entering with a GoldSource map.

Funny, it seems to me that if you submitted your competition entry, you'd qualify... This is just my opinion though. :heee:

and as for the poll, I have no idea what you said, clarify please.

What I mean is perhaps make an anonymous 2006 mapping poll on the front page. So we get an idea on how many people are entering for Source or Goldsource so to speak. (HL2 Engine, or HL1 engine) Because as of now, it seems as though only 2 people are entering for HL1.. but perhaps theres more in private.

2? Let's see. Me, Mr.Insane, you Unby, G.Ballblue, Hugh... I see at least 5 HL1 participants on a quick look.
