Baaa... football everywhere around here. I'm following it from time to time but I'd prefere watching the rerun of CSI over a match between Saudiarabia and the Ukraine.

I haven't watched much because I've been really caught up in the end of school here, I'm studying like an idiot for my exams (done friday). I'm not sure who I think will win based on how the games have gone so far, but I'll still be rooting for my native Germany in this. I almost... almost got to go to Germany to watch the games and stay with relatives, but it just didn't work out

I haven't discussed because i'm always watching it. I love football and
rugby so when major tournaments are on I watch as much as I can. Up
until a few days ago I hadn't missed any of the matches in the
cup, technically impossible now as fixtures are doubled up for the end
of the group stages.
I'm actually supporting Australia (qualification is hard for them now
after the Brazil defeat) as I don't support England, and feel an
attachment to the Socceroos after watching the nail biting qualifier
against Uruguay in Sydney. Realistically though, most of the titans are
out of the tournament if they perform like they have done so far -
England, Brazil, France, Italy, Holland, Germany have all played pretty
average football at best.
I fancy Argentina, they have a very decent chance. Failing that, Brazil
will find form and win it again or Spain could up the ante and
continue and improve on a good start.
It's a shame Wales haven't qualified since 1954

'Tis true. Keep in mind that Americans are in the minority by calling
it soccer. We call your American "Football" by the quaint name of
"rugby" and we don't wear pads like big girls either.
Soccer indeed!

Much like American football, you run the ball into the opposing team's goal area (end zone), and can kick the ball through a pair of upright polls for points as well. Unlike football you can't just throw the ball forward to your teamates, you can drop kick it, but they have to remain behind the ball most of the time. Been awhile since I played and all the head injuries make the rules fuzzy... kinda like a drinking game, cept with concussions instead of alcohol poisoning

It's pretty crazy to be able to watch the World Cup all the way here in Beijing.

Every four years Crono
I think the World Cup outstrips the Olympics as it happens. The United States hosted the cup in 1994.
2010 South Africa
2006 Germany
2002 Japan & South Korea
1998 France
1994 USA
1990 Italy
1986 Mexico
I can't remember/don't know the others apart from England 1966, much
lauded by the English as their most glorious football moment. As for
the current world cup, there's a good match tonight - Australia v
Croatia, promises to be a nailbiter for the Ozzies who could qualify
for the last 16 in their first world cup. Much the same as Ghana did
today, securing victory over the USA 2 goals to 1. Unlucky there, chaps

You know, I originally said four and I thought I messed up when I read that wiki page (not sure why). I'll change it back.
Anyway, I'm not personally interested in it too much. I'll give props to the sport, since it's one of the most athletic and enjoyable to watch. But the reason I know what I know is because my dad goes apes**t for the cup. I think Brazil is/was one of his favorite teams.
Blame it on Microsoft, God does.

Well, the US didn't advance, but I guess it doesn't matter too much as Brazil probably would have handed our asses to us in the next game.
Who do you guys think will win it all?

I've watched quite a few matches so far, and the commentators picked up on the most interesting point- the star players aren't playing a star performance as much as they do in thier respective club games (players play for a club and country obviously).
As for Brazil, they are good but maybe too laid back to win, England has a well good team, and some other teams like Spain are showing promise. Germany is good, but not winning material this time me thinks, England seems to have a better chance, though I think we just lost Owen to a foot injury. However we do have wonder kids rooney (19/20) and Walcott whos our backup striker (17 years old, youngest world cup player ever).
And are you sure 2010 is in South Africa? Bit dodgy down there for a high profile sport and hundreds of thousands of fans...

Reno, you're right. It has been confirmed that Brazil superstar ronaldo is too fat. How funny is that? His sluggish performance in the match before Japan was in all the newspapers. He shot 2 goals yesterday, though, pushing his WM goal world record.

Going by your comments on England you haven't actually watched them
play, Myrk? Rooney still isn't up to fitness, Walcott has been slated
and hasn't even played premiership football let alone international.
England have played poorly so far, scraping victories against teams
like Paraguay and Trinidad and Tobago is not condusive to winning the
world cup. England will probably go out in the quarter finals. Relying
on Peter Crouch, an unfit striker and a wonderkid who's not played
outside division 1 is bad form for Sven. Their play has been
uninspiring so far, goals have been lucky and either late or early with
nothing between them.
2010 is definately in South Africa. Germany are awful in defense - they
have got goals away but conceding against teams 50, 60 places below in
the seeding - especially multiple goals is not good for a team that
prides itself on defensive strength. The one thing they have to work in
their favour is the home support, but I think they'll struggle against
South American or fellow European giants.
Rumple - Australia in my eyes have a fair chance, as Italy have been
off form for years now. Like France, they struggle to show world class
performances that theyre renowned for. However, they have picked up
towards the end of the group stages, and their general player calibre
is higher than that of Australias who are geed up by the big names
(Bresciano, Viduka and Kewell). Australia will also suffer with the
suspensions resulting from yellow and red cards. Italy 3 - 1
Australia.
To win the whole thing, my money is on Argentina.

spain, argentina and ghana have played the best football that i've seen so far. the ivory coast were unlucky to be drawn in the group that they were. they're a much better team than some that that made it to the next round.

If I had to put money down I'd probably put it on Argentina.
One of the girls studying in Beijing is an American with a Swiss passport, and she's the most annoying fan I've ever met. In fact, its making me root against them just to spite her. When I was cheering for Togo she nearly bit my head off.

1 - 0 France. Hardly surprising considering they wheeled out the team
which won the 98 world cup. my money is now on Germany after argentinas
dramatic exit. for conduct such as they displayed they should be banned
from the 2010 world cup.

In the middle of that match they'll realize they were wrong and Germany will helicopter in and win.

I've been doing a lot of travelling and I missed all the games since the US lost.
Gwil, what did Argentina do?
Also, I heard from someone who watched the last Germany game that one of their players was doing the Hitler salute, but he could have been interpreting it incorrectly. Was the guy just waving or what?
Considering who is left in the tournament, I'm rooting for France. I like Zidane.
