While it would be nice to see it expanded to other games, I've never seen a website that covers a large selection of games be a success (spread themselves too thin?)
I must say I thought the same thing. Almost every mapping site has a speciality.

I noticed that to the extreme at levels4you.com. They have over 20 categories but the site's so Red Faction oriented it's almost funny. And that game is 5 years old already. I think what makes other Source mapping sites more populated is a total CS/S focus. The Snarkpit's more DM oriented which is anything but common for Source mapping sites. Also the snarkpit editing forum is so effiecent that half of the posts you see normally don't even get posted here, turning potential forum visitors into ghosts.

As it stands, it's a case of me and ReNo (possibly Orph - probably, I
know he is willing) trying to get hold of the full rights over the
domain and hosting issues.

If such a scenario were to come about, the site would remain
HL/HL2 oriented in my eyes (Dunc and Jon might have ideas otherwise) ,
but we can easily expand into refocussing the site as a general source
site - DM, CS:S, DOD:S etc..

Only time (and money!) will tell - fingers crossed we will be on for a rebirth.

As I said, I'd find a way to donate. All I would request is that no one really know that I had done so. I would not want anyone thinking "If Orph hadn't paid, he'd never have gotten away with that"

I want to retain my free will. Tis why I never really worked at getting and/or retaining an admin position. I want the right to say, or to continue to say what I feel like. I feel its paramount to be allowed to disagree with the admin, or other admin should I ever get the title again.

I honestly feel that I would never abuse power, but I do not want the stigma of having to watch my words just because it reflected poorly on this site.

As a nobody (member status) I can get away with more than I could with a green name.

Bottomline, when/if the time comes that you need cash, send the request via PM. That way I can deny any participation in lieu of a favoritism accusation.

You're better as a lone gun  As for site contributions - as I have
said, it's a matter of time. For everyone elses ears - we are working
toward fixing up the sites bugs and advancing it further. I know
there's a good few (Nickelplate for one - leave me alone! ) wanting
to see some change and refreshment in our beloved 'Pit.

I remember there was a Doom 3 section not so long ago(a year or year
and a half ago), but since only one map appeared it disappeared. I
know the D3 front is very well covered by other sites, but still I'd
like to see sort of "Radiant" sector on the map area as well that would
cover D3,Q3,Q4,Nexuiz,ET,etc. And intrest fresh blood from other BSP
mapping areas, which isn't a bad sounding idea to me...

The maps forum is meant to be open to any engine - there is no restriction that forces people to post HL/Source stuff only, it just happens to be what our site is known for. I'd be very happy to see some work in other engines popping up in there.

When you add a new map it is restricted to Call of Duty(?), HL and Unreal mods. A weird mixture. :heee: I'd add my 2 RF maps here but there doesn't seem to be a proper category for other engines (or it's really well hidden).

The Doom 3 mapping scene could be interesting. I don't own the game myself, unfortunately.

My first step, if I was going to open this site up to more engines, would be to open up areas for all the quake games (since they are like the brother of half-life in a way) and maybe stay within game engines that are quake based.

The map editor for Doom 3 is radiant, which makes mapping for Doom 3 icky. I can't do the whole one and a half views with a mini 3D view tacked on thing. Why can't more map editors be like UnrealEd? Hammer is the best additive-BSP-in-subtractive-space editor I've used, for all it's quirks. If Hammer and UnrealEd had sex and gave birth to an editor with the good features of both that I'm not going to list right now, it would be a god among map editors and people would be like OMG THATS L33T LOL. I'll stop ranting now. Bye.

 The Radiant UI can be turned into Hammer like UI in a matter of
moments. It just takes a bit of time to learn that the same thing
for making brush blocks is also used for selecing.

But in Hammer you can't make angled and curved cylinders and perfectly round surfaces that add nothing to a map besides allowing mappers to circlejerk amongst themselves about how powerful their engine is while they continue to make maps with gameplay design on par with Doom1.

I enjoyed Doom 1 and 2. Maybe because the limitations were well-defined and the developers worked within them to make the best damn game they could. When I look at Doom 3 I see "lol prity graphikz." When you think about it, that's what pretty much all of the hype was about. I remember someone telling me Doom 3 was gonna have "Shrek-quality" graphics and I just said "you know you're an idiot right?" He continued to say I had to see it to believe it, and I said I had seen it, and anyone who compares the x-thousand poly meshes being rendered in real-time of Doom 3 to the x-million poly meshes that took many hours to pre-render just one scene of Shrek is an idiot.

Hopefully ET:QW won't suck, I'm not holding my breath though.

Tree layout of all brushes and entities that ca be organized in groups. Which is far superior to visgroups.

Advanced Texture alignment tools. You can project textures from one brush to another ect.

Much easier to do vertex manipulation, you can undo parts of the manipulation. Quark will also never let you make an invalad brush, but automatically adjusting other sides to make it work.

Mirror tools and duplicators. You can mirror a whole side of your map as you work on it. All changes you do are automatically copied. The also have a path duplicator that makes hallways a breeze.

Downside to it being used for hl2, is that the 3d view still doesn't show the models, so it's impossible to orient models in their correct positions.

I sound like an ad don't I  Well, I used QuArK for years on Quake 2 and 3 projects, and started mapping for hl1 on it. I would have never switched if I didn't have to for hl2.

I tried an experiment once. This was with WC 2.1 and the QuArk of that time period.

My friend at the time was Zeddicus, from the oldtime PreFabLand days. He was a serious QuArk advocate and spent hours professing the perks of the editor.

Anyway, I loaded one of my well known maps into the editor, just to familiarize myself. I figured that something I knew intimately would assist my aptitude for the strange looking editor.

My map was totally unrecognizable. There weren't many errors (all were texture alignment issues, back then QuArk and WC hated each other intensely) The point however was that even with the assistance of my map, the editor was still so foreign that I couldn't recognize my own work.

QuArk has never impressed me.

QuArK is great for saving maps that in Hammer have happened to come along big bugs. Maps that are unopenable can sometimes be opened, re-saved and then re-opened in Hammer thus saving big headaches and/or crying.

No its not. I swear, some of you have all the sensitivity of a s**thouse seat with splinters. I did not leave because of the admin issue but just once I would like to step down with the same degree of ptroffessionalism that I took the posisition. Every f**king tome I get a green name, some asswipe starts an argument and I lose it before I can return and log in the next time. My green name this time was primarilly for the competition but since I did an exemplary job while I was an admin, I assumed that since there was a shortness of green names actively here that keeping it was something I was going to have to deal with for a while. I did talk to Duncan and Gwil about recruitments.... I assume that this is partly why we have two new faces that are now green. Losing it right after an argument looked like I lost it due to something I did instead of in reality losing it due to its limited nature which was for the competition. It was just really bad timing and I was depressed about my home situation.

My woes are numerous, and coming here is only adding to them, not reducing them like it should be. The childishness of late is just more than this old man can deal with. Whether you all have the ablity to not take what happens here serious or not is illrelevant, I cannot just let bygones be bygones. I am quite honestly tired of having to explain my thoughts to people half my age and with probably less than a quarter of my lifes accomplishments. THAT doesn't reduce their accomplishments, but that also doesn't elevate them to my level either... Online, everyone may be equal, but we discuss things that transcend online. Especially whenever it takes on personal belief systems.

My problems are mostly real life ordeals. The price of fuel has reduced my income to near poverty levels. I am still living in a motor home because every damned time I find a new place, someone beats me to the owner and buys it out from under me.I absoluetely must have a place of a certain size and location and that severely reduces my options when moving. I am not even able to remain online for more than a few minutes because my new 56k modem hates my computer. It literally locks the system up now. My being on 56k is nearly insurmountable and quite frankly, more trouble than its worth since coming here was my only motivation for being online. This place is litterally no fun to be around anymore.
The fact that I seem to have some sort of spyware thats so bad, that adaware locks up trying to remove it. Spybot cannot even find it so I am forced to remove my modem in the control panel daily and allowing the machine to reinstall the drivers every time. I am now in fact writing this via notepad so that I will have some semi-permenant record of my words in fear of losing them to the nether regions of a reboot. It has literally been so bad, that I have not been online more than 3 times since my past login. If I cannot find some way to fix my spyware situation, I will give up totally untill I can again get broadband.

On the plus side, I am working out a possibility of moving to Phoenix. The job I might get pays substantially more and the hours would be reduced considerably. My job however would remain driving but sadly, not nationwide. I would be restricted to the Arizona area only.

I have also recently rediscovered out-of-doors. Since my connection issues I have been spending much more time outside.

My tan lines are deep.

[edit] Good f**king god notepad sucks. </div></div>

Hello, just found this thread, first of all congratulations to the new admins, relativley new, i'm just late with congratulating i guess.

I hope morph gets to read this part here:

I understand exactly what your 'problem' is mate, allthough, ofcourse, your real life issues are nothing this 18 year old has ever struggled with, i know that if life is seemingly going down the poop shute, a bunch of adolecents / teenagers on forums argueing with you won't make it any better.

I've let such troubles in my life (not like yours, but still, troublesome troubles i do not wish to further discuss in public forums) judge the people in certain online communities entireley wrong, and i cencereley hope, than when you get that new job / house and your life sparks up again, which i'm pretty sure it will, since your such a determined ol' bugger.

That you will revise all of these arguements and fights you've had online, and look at it from another, maybe more clear perspective.
I know i've had my regrets that i've messed up and acted like a prick on 2 or 3 onlien communities which had cost me adminship and/or gotten me banned for life and i think that if i look back at it, from a now more controlled and regular lifestyle, that i should have acted differently ,or that i would have acted differently, would my life have been normal.

Hope you understand where i'm getting at, basically: Don't give up on the Snarkpit, we love you, we love your posts, we love your precence in this community, you have aides us much and i myself always have great pleasure in reading your posts / comments, and i've learnt alot from them also.

Hope you understand why i posted this and exactly what i mean, i'm finding it quite difficult to explain in English.

Thanks for reading this Orph if you did, and i hope you'll stick with the community and make another 11000 posts in the years to come.

Cheers,

~BioPulse
P.S.
I didn't get to read this complete thread, so take this as a reply to the post i quoted, and othing else, i did have time to read on, but i felt i needed to post this, and pardon my silly grammar and spelling mistakes.

(this doesn't mean that the price of the position is the results of the competition.)
