I had you in mind but... You were one of the better "advice" deliveries I have had.

Still.... shrugs

Happy Birthday Snarkpit

Let's hope technology reverses and allows us all to return to HL1 mapping. I'd be back in a flash!

And Orph, we've had our disagreements in the past too, but the beauty of it is we are (eventually) capable of seeing rights and wrongs in both our opinions.

Here's to another 5 years of The Snarkpit!

I send no less than one each day I am home. I feel compelled to reaffirm my fondness for a certain member. :heee:

Which reminds me, I have yet to send my obligatory message.

and yes Adam, we have reached a happy equilibrium. I wouldn't want to repeat our exchanges, but I wouldn't want to forget them either. They served a valuable purpose.

I've been reading this site since 2002, but I started spamming this
site only as late as 2004. I wish I could've been here from the very
beginning. I could've learned so much more... HL mapping was crumbling
down from its throne when I barged in with my bad english and useless
posts.

 I like this community. It has wisdom in it, it has opinions in it.
And most importantly: Most people know how to spell in here instead of
writing utter garbage with all sorts of silly ASCII characters...

What saddens me most is that I don't get any of the kicks I got from
HL1 mapping from the Source mapping. It feels so lifeless so
unintresting, you can do a lot, but still you archieve nothing.

Well, I decided to write a 2D game myself, to get some more gameplay and less tech in my maps - which will be 2D maps obviously. How about this? Probably the best part is that I get to write my own editor... no, the best part is that I get to define the core gameplay on which to base the maps...

</shameless self-promoting>

Because yeah, graphics isn't what's really interesting about level-design, I think not for most of us. I think it's both the experimenting and later on, the level design that's so interesting. Better art is just a matter of skills and time, design is much more creative and intangible. And much cooler.

I just got around to reading Cass's post, and its 100% spot on. In its heyday this was the only website I would read, cause it was one of the few HL sites worth its salt, and thinking about the old days and old events like me inadvertantly breaking Mikee's brain still make me crack a smile.

Sadly, the day HL1 mapping died my passion for computer games and their development died with it. And it was replaced with bitterness and cynicism, cause I missed my chance to become a great mapper and I got to watch the decline of modding, mapping, and computer gaming in general. Nothing can compare to the entertainment I had opening WC and just noodling around, imagining someday my newest fledgling map could become something worth playing, and I wish I could get that back, just for a little bit.

Says the man who made the extremely well recieved Torque? Clearly not all your passion died with HL1 mapping if you could cook that little baby up

haha well the .01% chance that your map could win an award from Valve and get added to every single HL2DM maplist is a reason to give it one last shot
