Yeah ReNo, I'm not too happy with my iPod for those reasons.
I have a 3rd generation iPod and apparently they did a recall because the batteries were s**t. I didn't bother to pay the shipping and waste the time sending it back, and right now I'm lucky if the iPod lasts 4 hours.
Additionally, I'm the only one who can upload songs to the iPod, and it has to be from the very same computer I originally synced it to, which is constricting to say the least.
I used to have a Creative mp3 player and I quite liked it. It was a long time ago, and not very big, so I'm sure they've come a long way since then. The only reason I bought an iPod was that I dropped and broke the Creative player when I was getting ready to go for a run. I'm such a klutz.

Using Rockbox eliminates the need for iTunes or anything like that, it just uses the file tree structure you can copy directly to your iPod, sort things how you want to with folders and stuff. Plus it can index and database all your iTunes music.. or even anything you dump on your disk.
Only thing - for iPods - is battery life, it's a bit less than with original firmware most of the time. For irivers, it's as-good-or-better, sometimes up to 20 hours or a bit more.

Why would you want to watch any length of video on a 2.5'' screen? Until they have the video equivalent of headphones available for less than $100, I won't touch a device like that.
However, I very much like my creative mp3 player (MuVo TX FM). Make of that what you will.
Some people are like slinkys...
They aren?t really good for anything, but you can't help but laugh when one tumbles down the stairs.

If your battery is only getting 5 hours, then you can replace it with a different one.
I've yet to be dissatissfied with a Mac product.

Sorry couldn't read the whole thread but I want to tell you that iPods aren't half as great as people say. They have perfect controls and design. But...
It's completely iTunes controlled. MP3s are stored with weird file names and you get all sorts of problems if you don't use apples' programs to arrange your files.
I have the last iPod generation before the video ones and I had so many troubles with it. The sound quality, compared to a decent PC box or stereo is just medicore (with the same set of headphones) which was a huge disappointment for me. I'm not a music expert and could still hear how everytime someone sings an "s" it sounds like he's bitting his tongue.
Also, the Windows compatibility is OK now but using it for both windows and mac is a pain. It's clear that 20 GB are used as a harddisk as well as for music and there the iPod failed so badly. It should work nicely for only Windows or Mac but both is a pain. Not many people care, yes, but it's still annoying. Be happy to get an iPod alternative, it's not as good as the black silhouettes make you believe.
EDIT: I should have read the whole thread. midk, that sounds interesting.

reaper47: Haha, indeed it is - give it a try. Sounds like just what you'd want. It's nice to be able to set up your own folder/file structure, comprehensive on-the-go playlist setup/browsing/manipulation, bookmarks...

I ended up buying the vison M. Its great, but if you get one update the firmware straight away as it fixes some minor bugs the player had. Its around twice as thick as an Ipod aswell, but to me it feels sturdier. The video quality looks a lot better than my friends 30gb Ipod (latest generation), and you can hook it up to a tv and watch the videos at very good quality also.
Reckless disregard for childrens well being, women and nothing but utter contempt for other cultures.
