I was thinking CCC#2 would have a 2 week time frame. 4 weeks seems a little long in terms of attention span and enthusiasm.

So, we need a topic for the next challenge.

Reaper made these suggestions:

vegetation (difficult?)
handrails
urban physics props (deadly or fun gravity gun ammunition you'd find in your average city environment)
Last time around "household items" was suggested.

Alternatively, if enough people would prefer to make this a custom texturing challenge, we could do something with that.

So, use this thread to make any suggestions about the type of challenge! There's about a week before the next competition is set to begin (it will end October 1st).

Don't you know? "brainstorm" is no longer a politically correct term.

I vote for the urban prop because you can create a pretty large variety of things that fall under that category.

Urban is a good theme IMO, whatever is chosen I think someone should list the existing stock models that fall into that category to avoid reinventing the wheel, so to speak.

Natural props sounds usefull. More difficult perhaps, yes, since it's heavily texture-dependant, but the current HL2 maps seem to lack vegetation variety a lot. I love outdoor maps, yet I hate the meager stuff that HL2 comes with in that regard. Although, Ep2 does look like it'll provide some interesting stuff there...

At least it would be a challenge, I'd say...

My vote would go to the urban physics props. Although the 2 week
timeline is a bit too tight for me as I can only work on this stuff
during weekends and that translates to a maxium of 4 days time for
me(if I have time to work on the model on all days). But take the
timeline that suits the majority best, I'll adapt.

I'm already getting some nifty ideas. Sledge hammer sounds good as
well as a fire extinguisher. Urban theme gives a lot of freedom.

Not that I map anymore, or will participate in this, but I'd suggest either vegetation or structural props. "cool" gravity gun ammo is all well and good, but it doesn't really add anything of substance to the map. Highly detailed I-beams, pillars, ceiling tiles, even whole wall sections might be far more broadly useful.
Some people are like slinkys...

They aren?t really good for anything, but you can't help but laugh when one tumbles down the stairs.

The problem with those (wall sections, ceiling tiles.. anything architectural/structural) is the texturing. If the texture doesn't match the exact one you use in your map, then.. you can't use it. You can custom-skin it but that's some work I think you shouldn't have to deal with (I wouldn't want to do that, maybe just because I suck at that kind of thing).

I do like the idea of urban props.

I have not read this yet, so disregard if its already mentioned:

I think you should make more items that can be incorporated into the structure of maps... Real structural items.

IE, having a section of wall that becomes ammo for the gravgun after someone destroys a wall.

A section of roof for the same.

I would also mention that there still isn't any quality fire plugs or phone booths. :heee:

/me shuts up now.

I think it would be good if we force ourselves to work with physics collision models now. Small ggun ammo sounds perfect for that. Pillars and I-beams is a good idea for a CCC but the last competition was already a "static prop" one. Most of us are still learning and therefore I think it would be good to work through all the different challenges of building props. Including the physics hulls (which I think can be quite difficult to do).

Physics props are my favourite for now.

idd. light fixtures and structural elements would be the 2 things i would find most usefull to incorporate in a map. I-beams, T-beams, tiles, grating, panels all would be highly appreciated. If these are done i a neutral dark-metal texture this could be broadly useable imo.

How about skybox props?
They're usually low-res, so 1337 texturing won't be a problem.

I'm working on a building I've emulated from other architecture at the moment; screens when available.
Also change the texture of the dock. Docks are rarely tile. -Facepunch

I'll have to wait till the weekend to kick this off with the attention it deserves. Sorry!

 Same here. Or "Samma h?r." as swedish would say... I'm surprised, if
that's anywhere near the right form. It's so many years since I last
studied swedish.
