Hey guys, I seem to be back for a bit and have a hankering to fix some stuff, so let me know what things you want changing/adding that isn't too drastic

BTW if Gwil told you I was only here to harvest more e-mails, he is lying. He was the one who tied me up and threw me off a bridge in Northern Russia a year ago...

When one of us poor Firefox users turn javascript on from the profile
our typing in this lovely orange box turns completely black and when we
finally press the lovely orange button on the lovely black background
our post gets filled with all sorts of lovely bits of html code.

The only bug I notice that is really annoying is when editing a post a quote gets all messed up, because the bbcode isn't stored in the database, but the html it gets translated to. (That's how it looks in any case)

The only other thing is when using the spell checker, it eats characters like '+', which it should just skip over. It changes other characters in the ascii set, like ?, to unicode (%uFFFD, kind of stuff)

Those are really the only things I've noticed.

And welcome back, for short or long term.
Blame it on Microsoft, God does.

I've noticed when editing posts with [ quote] tags, they get mauled and I have to redo them. Using Opera 9.0, dunno if it affects other browsers.

The java textbox has been broken Fx 1.5.x.x (and is broken in 2.0 as well)

The text is black and hence unreadable and also contains a couple of lines of HTML.

Here is a screenshot, I have highlighted the text so you can see what I mean:

Lots of BBcode gets messed up when editing a post (images with thumbnails when re-editing and quotes for example). Maybe it's only the newer versions of Firefox? Version 1.0.6 sounds a bit old.

Also there is this bug of uploaded JPEGs getting re-compressed even if they're good in kilobyte size.

And welcome back, too, Leperous. It kinda feels like the return of the messiah - from what I heard at least

Its true IE7 has many features that firefox has...granted....but the
whole reason I dont use IE is it's access to the inner workings of
Windows (which leads to more viruses/spam).

But something I've noticed this forum doens't have is a "preview" of
you post (so you may check your bb code all works out). If not that
then maybe a built in feature that checks your begining and ending tags
match up.

Probably the most important change you can make to this site (that noones mentioned yet) would be to give someone else leprosy, so when your leperous hands fall off, someone else can maintain the site.

Welcome home Sir. Your participation around here left a hole few could fill.

As to the topic: (and I have no clue how to remedy this) I have until tonight been forced to use truck stop computer terminals to post here. In a nutshell, its just this side of impossible.

For starters, most have a sort of popup blocker. Part of Snarkpit has those popup screens (IE the PM system) and its impossible to check them cause they refuse to show up.

Secondly, there are some java errors that are present. I cannot recall what, but they are reported none the less.

Thirdly, the server/host you have, is still causing issues at times with slowness of pages and whatnot.

Thats about it at present.

Again.... Welcome home.

But this thread loads waaaay to slow, so check out the new one.
Funny that you'd post a bug in parting and seem unaware of the plight. There must be a way to have older threads load faster. Why does all the pages have to be there? I mean, if you want to scan back through them its your decision to wait but if you've been around for the whole correspondence, why shouldn't only the most recent pages be accessed by the database retrieval system?

This thread seems to have completely disappeared:

I also suspect at least one of the HL2 editing threads has disappeared, but I don't remember what used to be there.

Whatever happened to just banning people, instead of deleting their accounts and completely destroying the structure of the forums? Just restore his account from the backup (we do have backups, don't we?), ban him, and everything will be fixed.

"completely destroying the forums" is a bit of an overstep. I used an

expected, for all of - ooh - 3 threads? Shalll I telephone the security

And no backups arent used here, nor for the majority of SQL based boards.

We need a sticky thread that we all can use to inform others when/where/which game, we are playing on at any specific time.

I am sure that I am not alone in saying that my online frag time is extremely limited. It would be nice to have a fragging thread to reply in, without the need to create a new thread each time.

Opinions anyone?

Did they fix the steam friends thingy? Last I heard, admittedly it was ages ago, it was borked.

I'd love to be able to seek out friends without seemingly to plead for players to join me in a frag. (Hmm, that didn't come out the way I had meant it to)

To be honest Im not sure, when I created a steam account it used the email address as the user name, now it seems to have changed to an 'account name'.

So for me people would add my email, but it seems for newer accounts you use the account name.

Snarkpit has a 56k friendly version, most of us know this.

I would like to see a broadband unfriendly version. It is a pain but necessary. Snarkpit shouldn't have to police every user to maintain a website that is not only respected, but respectable. People, most especially broadband users are about the most inconsiderate here in terms of what they post. Specifically screens.

Yeah, I know its a dead horse, but the problem still exists. To tell the truth, I am about fed up with my inability to impose a proper viewpoint with regards to what file sizes to upload. If I post simple text, either it is ignored by the majority, or soma asshole will argue the point. BOTH are inexcusable but the event still transpires.

My solution is simple. Either disable external file links to the image portion, since this is the majority of the problem. ALSO disable the Snarkpit optimization algorithm. Its not the best anyway. In its place, impose a file size limit, much the same as with out avatar system with a 100k upper limit. If a person wants a 1600x1200 picture posted, then it will be. BUT ugly as sin. If a person wants a great looking screen, they will post an 800x600 like THIS SITE SUGGESTED!

Lastly, if the person complains about this imposition, we can explain politely, that it was necessary to do, because the current system was abused so badly. If they continue to bitch, we can use the "I R MORON" avatar system on them until they relent.

I firmly agree that this should be totally un-necessary, but the fact remains that it is also, unavoidable. You cannot, or should not have to babysit so lets remove the option of needing to by imposing our will in advance of the problem.

The best things in life, aren't things.

@Orpheus:

I've been using dial-up for a long time before I got broadband and I understand this problem.
800x600 is fair for dial-up users (I think).

There's another point I want to add:

Posting 1600x1200 pictures is nonsense. Even if you got an 21" display the images are way to big (In my case they just fill up the entire screen). Most people use a desktop resolution below that size anyway (even in case you got a very expensive display with >22").

Screenshots that are 800x600 improve the overview of the entire page/shown map/whatever and if you are using high resolutions go download a program like IrfanView and downsize the taken screenshots.
You'll even benefit of it:

Downsizing a 1600x1200 picture to 800x600 will improve the overall look because you add some additional "anti aliasing" and sharpness to it.

First, I'm not sure if I missed (or forgot something) but does Gwil or staff members, generally, have access to the site code now? Would be great.

Otherwise limiting the file size to 800x600 (mainly for viewing pleasure) and <160kb (for load speed) sounds ideal. Also the auto-compressing could be a very nice feature if it was limited to large file-sizes.

oh, and forum-threads should be automatically created for new, unfinished maps (or it should at least be a default option). The "comments" section and the forums are quite different environments for getting feedback and it would make sense to limit commenting to finished maps or at least very advanced betas. I see a lot of maps with comments like "you should get rid of the dev textures." or "can't wait till it's finished." which are terribly out of place once the map is finished. Also I prefer lists where the latest comment is up, but that's more of a random idea...
Why snark works.

The basic rule of thumb is, buy low, sell high. Remember this while I negotiate a settlement, with regards to an upper limit file size. Remember also, that I firmly believe that 80k is quite high enough. Also remember that I was talked into a 100k cap, by the majority of those whom were interested enough to haggle it. Also notice that I haven't said much even upwards of 120k, since quite a few favor that size.

Now notice, that a 150k and a 160k limit has been proposed. So, whats the difference between 80k and 160? about 3 minutes on 56k. (Give or take, since Snarkpit sometimes takes more, and less time. I think thats due to the host though)

Now, why have I suddenly complained in this forum thread again? Replies like the one within this map. Yes, I have been called worse, but dammit, enough is enough. Why should I have to endure such language? Why should I even have to remind people of the screenshots? Mind now, I even asked this guy to boost the sizes, and I STILL AM RIDICULED.

Also, I bring this up now because I think that it is now possible to get it initiated, since there is more than likely someone in charge again.

I personally believe that 100k is more than enough, but will settle for anything that is IMPOSED upon these people. Something set in stone that they will not be able to circumvent with outside links. It would be very improper for us to govern another site by asking them to respect our rules. BUT we can stop anyone from linking backward to them.

i'm not trying to haggle. i thought that the 150k was generally acceptable, even though i usually keep my own below 100.

the comment you refered to is now gone, even though that wasn't your intentions. it deserved to go, on it's own merit.

are you seriously suggesting that i can't use my own webspace to host images that i show here?

I dunno really Fisheye. I use mine exclusively TBH and truth be told, I meant outside, as outside and to be fair, there aren't any more pits to be had so the question of new people getting one is moot.

But think on this. We already are allowed to post 3 screens uploaded. Do we really need more? If so, ask that the 3 be upped to 5, or any number you feel necessary.

To tell the truth, I cannot foresee any method, where someone won't be hurt.

I will look into the concerns shown - for now, its all about fiscal and
administrative concerns. As with the competitions, watch this
space.

The forum needs synced again.

If you click on the last page of my travels thread, it will not load the page. You can only access the thread if you click the snark icon.
