I have been fretting over this for ages. I thought it lost during my fire but, alas I found it in some of the items I had in storage.

What I need is two things.

1) What does the final name need to be?
2) Should we all have it listed in each of our profiles?

My personal belief is:

1) PitCrew or Spit
2) Yes, by all thats holy. We all worked our collective asses off.

Sadly, I don't know how to get in touch with everyone but those that are present, please speak up.

Finally, send some sort of a text file to me so I can include it with the zip.

THERE WILL BE NO FINAL COMPILES. This map is as complete as it will ever be. BUT its a royal shame to lose it forever.

Thanx.

For those of you unaware: The Snarkpit had a co-jointly created map under construction. It was the single most ambitious task this site has endeavored to create.. As far as level editing is concerned. It surpassed almost every limitation the HL1 engine has. We had to tweak it dozens of times with several different methods to achieve even a compile.

Anyway, this is the file as it stands.

PLEASE delete it after you look at it, as the final version WITH A REAL NAME might cause some issues.

Thanx guys, for allowing me to be a small part of this map.

Sincerely
Jon Rickenbacker

Yeah, I think it's about time we just let it free really  When it comes to the name, I've never been all that keen on either PitCrew or Spit, but I'm easy and I'm happy to go with either. I have no problem with everybody who was involved (who is around, and wants to) listing it in their own profiles - it's just a shame we don't have any system in place here for co-ownership really

I'm not bothered about what goes in the text file from me - it's too long ago for me to particularly remember who gave feedback and who deserves credit. I can scarcely even remember who helped build the thing now

Ah, I remember running through that level, a long time ago. It's a bit late for a release, but better now than never, I'd say.

@reaper: I've seen this multiple times, here, with this map, with the Mapping Mosaic, and on TWHL: two singleplayer series, on the VERC forums: Issues, Reissues, etc. I've attempted this twice with my fellow Dutch mappers, but the first one eventually died a slow death after 3 of us did their part, and the second never really took off well. It's possible but I've found it generally hard to bring them up to a certain level of quality/consistency. It's probably better suited as a fun project.

This one simply ran out of time. Sadly.

Its way to monumental to swap over to HL2 methinks since practically nothing would make the transition... Except the walls. And this thing is huge.

Still, someone still plays HL1.. Perhaps somebody will play it.

Well, I always thought it kinda fit but...

Hows this sound. When I first started thinking about a name for this map I had a notion of choosing an odd name, that somehow really fit. You know my tendency toward such like "False_Accretion"

OK, I know that this is a bit of a stretch but how does LaGrange sound?

With words like "identity element" and "group" this seems befitting for a map built by individuals to form a group effort.

This is just my thinking but.. What do you guys think?

@Captain P: Yea, I've actually participated in one of these projects myself. It was a map built by 4 of us from the redtech Red Fraction mapping community. Like all of these projects it got stretched into a huge thing, lasting several weeks. Finally, the map was released over a year late and put the engine to its limits because of it's sheer size. But it was a lot of fun to build.

http://redfaction.levels4you.com/downloads.l4y?review=13930&cat=41

I wish Red Faction 2 wouldn't have been the huge disappointment it was. RF had a better community than the ignorant and unsupportive publishers deserved.

Hmm... good old days.

cool map. i've downloaded many of these big, nice maps but only played them with myself, since none likes half-life, people has eyes for counter-strike only.

i'm confused: who are the "pitcrew"? if we all are the pitcrew, where's ma name in da map?

and don't forget to update those game_texts (www.snarkpit.com).

does anyone want to create a server to test out the map?

I was thinking that since its going to be nearly impossible to contact all 7 members that the text file should have a link to each persons profile here at Snarkpit.

In this way, at least a bare minimum of credits will be established.

What do you guys think?

[EDIT]

PitCrew was begun in the last version of Snarkpit Forums.. Version 3 if I recall with the thread "I would like"

Sadly, that thread seems no longer to be locatable.

In version 4 and 4.5 (for which we did not restart the thread counting process) these threads are available if you would like some history into the map.

http://www.snarkpit.net/forums.php?forum=1&topic=609
http://www.snarkpit.net/forums.php?forum=2&topic=1660

Sadly, the thread "I would like" had the majority of the postings and was the top contender for most post counts until the "Recently watched" thread.

Enjoy the reads.

A few people have been asking how big this map is.

I dunno if this type of info helps but, I found the .rmf today and took this screen.

This has nothing to do with editing, but I can ask in the editing forums if need be. This error/issue has been present since I got my new 7800gs video card. If you look at these screens, you will see a black square around the steam sprites. This error/issue happens intermittently, and not all sprites are effected. Many of the sprites that are, seem to straighten out if I move close enough to them.

I have no clue what this is and the map has no error. Also, this happens in all HL1 maps now. I am not aware of any HL2 maps though so I am unsure if it happens there too.

In all seriousness, I only just noticed this two days ago in another map, but I have not played much HL1 since I got my new card.

See if you know what this is... Also, these screens were taken in PitCrew, but the error is in both the HL1 steam and WON version. I have both versions and the problem lies in both.

Thanx in advance.

btw, # of solids or faces are not proportional to # of planes. planes define angles at which faces can exist. So you can have have a small map with lots of twisted brushwork, and have far more planes than a map with many aligned blocks.

But then wouldn't all the sprites have the problem?

Maybe someone cough forgot to make the final sprite additive and left it's rendermode to "normal"?

maybe not.

The problem also vanishes when I get close to the sprite.

[EDIT]

No promises, remember that.

This map was a nightmare to compile but.. Its also been a couple years since the last compile and there have been a couple advances in the tools. I am willing to try one last compile to fix any last errors you can find.

As I said, no promises. I am not even sure that I can remember the compile settings that I used BUT perhaps with a bit of assistance from you guys I will recall them.

Look over the map. Anything reasonable will be addressed. I cannot reduce its size or magnitude but anything else will be considered.

Understand, this map is the largest thing I have ever worked upon, so don't get your panties in a twist if I cannot do what you wish. There were times when adding a wall, just one wall pushed it over the limits of the engine.

The fact that 7 unique mappers worked in harmony deserves one last try. Look over the map, and post your thoughts.
Anywho... PitCrew Map.

READ!

I mentioned that the map began in Snarkpit Version 3 with a thread "I would like..."
Oops, missed that.

...only change left to make will be its permanent name. When we decide, I will edit this file. I ask that when that occurs that you either rename the BSP yourselves, or re-download the last/final version.
do you think people will re-download it just for a name? it's 100% finished but it lacks a name (then it's not 100% finished). i think people wouldn't care much about the name since the map is finished, be patient and release it when you got the name: 7 Snarkpitter's map, Samurai 7, PitCrew butonly7peopleworkedonthismap, etc.

and did you fix the game_text thing?

Sadly, one cannot do an "onlyent" compile, without first doing a full compile.. And I do not have the last log.

The only way to fix that text, and/or anything else, is to do another full one.

You could try rip-ent. I believe it will give you the capability of modifying the game_text externally, once all the entities have been "ripped". Then simply throw the new entity setup back into the map.

Why don't you download the map Andy, and tell me if you see it???
Hmm no. No I can't see it. Then maybe there is something wrong with your video drivers.
Did you try running it in d3d and software mode?

God no.. Never thought of it.

D3D and software were for tiny cards. Never occurred to me really.

I'll go see.

Too bad I wasn't around at the time to help build this.

If you wish, I can run over the optimization of the map and see if I can squeeze anymore performance out of it. I can also try a number of compile tools to see if one works better at doing this sort of thing.

On the plus side, I updated my drivers today, in the hopes that it would solve my steam issue. These black squares are now gone. Yay.

Now if only my steam would sort out. BTW, this is a won installed HL1.

Yeah, I still have all my old WON stuff. Original HL, Op4, BS, TFC, DoD etc.

All back before Steam when it was awesome.

I Loaded the BSP in Quark and it crashed it

Then again im pretty sure im going to get replies saying quark sucks blahblah

Im not suprised considering this map wouldbt be compileable under the stock tools

So is there a chance we could do this again?

Theres always a chance. There has been a few already. None have reached even this far toward completion though. Its VERY hard to mesh building styles.

I was so glad that we 7 meshed so well. I feel that we each took a bit of inspiration from one another.

Start one yourself. You only need a partner to begin with.

Just a little confidence booster for you guys.

The Map was Huge and would work wonderfully for over 8 players that detail in most of the maps was amazing and the quality was really good across the entire map. The lighting was beautiful and and the sheer size was just amazing. I loved how each room had at least 2 exits so game play should be good overall

Now I know its too late for this really but i just figured id come out and say it

Due to the sheer size the map is pretty confusing. Theres also really no main area which isnt necessarily a bad thing but i thought it could use one somewhere. There are alot of clipping problems also but i dont think those can be fixed. Aside from that i should shoot rockets through some of the grates but i think thats a halflife bug

bump for the map that broke my brain

I had this f**king thing totally finished outside of weapon/ammo placement and player starts and had to just give up. It was too complex for me to do with any acceptable level of quality. I still feel bad that I basically killed the project with me redoing my section, but I can find peace knowing that the map was far superior after my tinkering (and that I doubt any HL1 servers could have ran it with the full 32 players). Oh well
