I figured that we should start a TF2 thread instead of talk about it in the Fortress Forever thread. I looked for any old TF2 threads but they were out-dated, so I figured "let's have a "released" thread!"

I just got through playing a little this morning, OMG! I instantly LOVE it. I certainly will be playing it again every chance I get. Highly recommended if you have the money now! ($5 USD discount! can't beat that!)

I'll be waiting to buy it in stores. I like owning my games. Plus Steam is so expensive to run.

I love it, definately my new lunch time game at work. I wasn't a big fan of TFC, so I don't really know what it is about this one that has me so into it, but I guess the visuals don't hurt  I had a great time running around as a scout today, beating the crap outta heavies from behind with my baseball bat

Steam is expensive to run? What do you mean by that?

Using 38000k Mem and 77000k VM, it's the most intensive process in my task manager. With the system I'm running i need all i can spare.

I'm running out of excuses for not getting the game right now.

Except, perhaps, my Radeon 9800 pro, 128MB. What's the lowest card it is known to run? I don't expect it to run smoothly with my card, does it?

But hey, I played through HL2 on a Geforce 2 MX, I'm not picky.

I played the original team fortress classic a little (by a little I mean every day for 3 months at one point). So when I write this I have a little to base it off of. TF2 fixes the classes IMO. There are too many to mention, but in general they made each role an important one. What I mean by that is you don't see 20 solders fighting one another, you see every type of class running around. Which adds element of variety to the game.

Personally I enjoy playing the spy (which the method of masking yourself has improved over the original game), I enjoy sneaking behind people and killing them with my knife. While I think that the rate at which the spy can put on his outfit is a bit overpowered ATM, I still enjoy killing and ducking back into the shadows and striking again.

Visually its a nice break from the normal HL2 scene. Now artists can focus more on the design and architecture of a level rather than the texture itself. Definitely worth getting.

A small, tiny, nearly unnoticeable detail I, well, noticed... which reminds me of why I like Valve's style so much:

In all of the clips released the HW muzzle flashes had this cell-shaded, hard-edged look to it. It was my only gripe with the TF2 style. It didn't fit, conceptually, because the TF2 rendering isn't cell-shaded but a rather three dimensional, CGI-rendered look with a lot of depth to it. It's not supposed to simulate brush-strokes or line-drawing.

And shortly before the release, they changed it. From all the screenshots and videos I've seen lately, they are smooth now. And I love the new look. No other company in the world would have thought "Hey, we're 10 years behind our supposed release date, let's redo the current muzzle flashes because they subtly compete with the rest of the style!"

Mmmm...
Why snark works.

I bought the Orange box yesterday after opening Steam for the first time in a week and noticing that I had missed quite a lot.
I only had time to play it once, and I played as about half of the classes. So far I love it. After I write one more page, I'm going to play some more.

My 9800 Pro 256Mb RAM runs it just fine.

October 10 is the release date at the moment.

And no there is no longer a box with just Ep2 Portal and TF2, there was originally going to be a 'Black box' with just those three games.

However you can give the games you already have as a 'gift' through steam, so you could sell them to a friend or on eBay I guess.

I've put about 4 hours into the game so far. While I did play TFC I never was able to get into it, and I feel that valve smoothed over all that with TF2. I got right into it and was able to kick ass. Great style, great classes, great maps, and commentary! love it.

if you are planning on getting Orange Box, just do it now.

I'm wondering whether to change my HL2DM server to TF2, effectively abandoning all hope (for now) of doing map reviews for HL2DM and focus instead on servicing the onslaught that'll be coming from TF2.

Anyone got advice?

I'd say do it, personally. HL2DM isn't exactly a thriving community, and I'm sure that there will be a good number of people having a crack at making TF2 levels, so it couldn't really do any harm. Then again, it depends on what you are into. If you love HL2DM and don't particularly like TF2, it probably isn't a great idea. But then who doesn't like TF2*, really?

(moaning TFC addicts complaining about "f*ked up" changes to their favourite classes/weapons/maps aside)

Heck, I say go TF2, not even owning the game. I got to play for about 10 min at a friend's place and what I experienced, in that short time, was enough to convince me.

Something tells me it's a much more rewarding game to map for, too. By the way, is the SDK out already?

I think I will. I'm really enjoying TF2 so far. To al those moaning addicts, I'll say that I'm sorry it's not the spam fest you're so used to.

I don't think the SDK is out there yet, but there's been some talk of trying to reverse engineer(#11) a few things, if you can believe it.

I suppose I'd only switch it this early on to try and get a community started before the SDK is released. And I'll just go ahead and say it now: Scouts Broke!

Reverse Engineering projects made with current versions of Visual Studio is impossible (that's right, impossible).

The one thing Microsoft figured out is how to jumble things in memory (and in virtual memory) so well, that you can't even dump the stack to a log and go through it.

The other way would be to use the code and see what it does when you give it input, but that's just a silly waste of time in most cases.

Of course, there's a chance that Valve didn't run that feature before distribution ... but, I doubt it.
Blame it on Microsoft, God does.

I guess they just extracted the entity properties from the BSP files to do create a basic FGD.

[edit]: There even seems to be an (official?) FGD floating around already. But the textures seem to be messed up.

Wow, I've been playing nothing but TF2. And when my crappy university conection went out, I sought out 4 other guys and bought our own cable modem and connection, I couldn't stand the lagg! I don't regret any of it, it's sooo worth it. Lol, my steam community page says I've been playing it for 42.2 hours, Sounds about right, lol. A-matter-of-fact, I'm gonna go and play some more!! I LOVE this game!!!!1

BTW, nice to finally meet you Lep, I came here about the time you stopped commenting. But, I've been trying to play my part for the sake of the SnarkPit! All hail Leperous! (na, just kidding; I'm not that mindless.)

Password retrieval system, its crude but effective. I think valve even offers a service you may call if you no longer have access to the email you registered with, you just have to give some info back to them...you know... name, address, DNA, first born childs name, your SS# (xxx-xx-xxxx 8 digit identifying number used in the US, I don't know what the UK has...)...etc.

Well, Valve was kind enough to unlock my account so I don't have to play the German, censored version of HL1 anymore.

But...

If you ever wondered what TF2 looks like if you play it with a German IP... uhmm... actually you never wanted to know, I guarantee. This is what TF2 looks like in German (and it can't be patched or unlocked thanks to Steam]

Ahahahah, okay, despite that those gibs are from the german version of the game, those screenshots single handedly gave me the desire to play this game.
Breaking the laws of mapping since 2003 and doing a damn fine job at it

Yea, I played that, but because there's no timer, matches tend to go on FOREVER. Its all that the HL2 World server is hosting, because a guy from there made it. It's an ok map, at least it's balanced.

I really like TF2 so far, its the first MP game I've played that really MUST have FF off to work, its really too easy to kill teammates. I've been intentionally TK'ed 100 times for "spy checks"

With so very few maps though, it is starting to lose its luster a little already.
don't sweat the petty stuff, just pet the sweaty stuff.
