I've never done any fantasy/mideval textures before. I think this one worked out pretty well, but I sense something about it that just doesn't fit... since you guys have more expertise on semi-gothic type architecture, I thought I should ask.

[EDIT] I should note, yes, this is for one specific place, not for a public texture pack or something of the like.[/EDIT]

I , uhh.. well..hmmm

looks nice cass, but extremely specific.

I think the problem may be that it "feels warm". some how the colors are a bit to friendly. A gate like that should be implacble and brooding rather than simply old, which is the feeling I get.

I'm sorry I can't be more specific than that turbid description.

Seems too high-contrast/intense. Like someone took the Burn tool and went crazy until the colors became too saturated. I'd mute it a little more and lower the contrast. Though it really depends on what engine the texture is for - Quake 3 handles bright white-colours rather badly, and the Savage engine kind of lowers the contrast of all textures when rendering.

i think its separated from the background too much....like a hanging ornament, instead of a moulded-into-the-wall kinda thing....the "ornament" has a different color scheme, yet the same kinda material structure....make sense?....but it depends i guess on what yer going for cass.... but i like it so far man....

the column in the middle projects it outward....but no shadows behind it....

It's the Mantle of the Winged Eye, seal of the Clan of Balbaroth, and the texture is of the Dunst?n Gate of Nazsgild. I may choose to explain this further sometime, but as of now, there's no need to do so.

The kind fellows living behind this gate are not actually evil - their arcitechture is simply to make them seem more menacing, thus I did not coat it with blood or something of the like.

I spent about a full day trying to make the seal look like it moulded onto the rest of the wall, but in the end I decided it looked too strange when the lighting from the rest of the wall was applied to it. Thus, I tried to make it look like it was flat, yet the back of the seal fit the countour of the spike deals. Not terribly sure if I succeeded, but hey, that's why I ask

I forgot to add "Its f**king 1337" to my post. Not my style of texture (Not a fan of demonish metals), but still nontheless, the coolest door Ive seen.

My textures are almost always purposefully overburned or oversharpened because of how HL mipmaps (and I assume HL2 will as well). When at 1/2 scale, a lot of the detail is totally invisible unless the texture looks really strong.

I have to agree, it's really good, though maybe a little noisy - looks like it's been filtered through an indoor TV antenna. Though maybe that's just the oversharpening - in which case no worry as it'll probably look fine in-game

how old are you matt?

you don't catch on very fast when someone hints, especially as blatantly as i just did.

since i was the person whom showed some indignation, looking in my profile might narrow your search parameters a bit, but even if i didn't have one, there are several noteworthy castle maps right here at SP.

adam hawkins, scary jeff, mazemaster, doc rock i think all had at least one. don't quote me on that tho, cause i really don't remember them all.

I'm only in the 400s aren't I?

Hey I just tried to update the URL for the map but I can't find the thread about my castle... I don't suppose anybody has the link? Also Lep the drop down boxes don't auto load the page in mozilla... I think this will work (this was on the main control panel page):

change: <select name="editmap">

to: <select name="editmap" onChange="if (editmap.value != '') this.form.submit()">

and change: <form action="redir.php" method="post" onsubmit="if(!editmap.value) return false">

to: <form action="redir.php" method="post">

If this doesn't work, onChange="this.form.submit()" will definately work, but may submit the form if somebody chooses a map type instead of an actual map (e.g. 'HL:')...

I personally thought what Orph posted was pretty rude. You can't expect someone to know various maps at Snarkpit off the top of their head. It's this kind of attitude, I'm thinking, that is scaring away other people from Snarkpit (i.e. The Specialist forumers).

Anyway, back to the subject of Cassius's texture. Looks menacing, but I'll reserve final judgement until I see it in-game I guess.

Oh, don't start this s**t again. It is rather obvious what Orph is saying in his first post about much coughing and tapping of feet. I would ask the age question too in that situation, because I would only expect younger people to not get the blatant hint.

And if there are people out there who avoid the Snarkpit because they can't handle that, good riddance. The last thing this site needs is more people overreacting to typed words and misreading everything.

Oh, and to actually contribute to the thread, I think the texture looks nice, but is very limited in its uses. It's definitely a one shot use per map sorta thing. Course I'm certain it would be part of a much larger, themed wad, so that would be no big deal.

The Snarkpit being a close community is a good thing - our members include, for the most part, the best, and the best-to-be. The harshness filters out most of the rest.

To those of you that would whine about your mistreatment, however, I would remind you that some of the most intelligent and appreciated figures here are the ones who underwent huge amounts of general ridicule. The harshness that takes it's part in community affairs here is not meant to turn anyone away; all that counts is that one lasts it through.

They've been around for a while, actually..

There's one on Quakenet and one on GamesNET. Neither really sees that much action though... (#snarkpit on both)

#kornflakes is "teh place 2 b" on Quakenet though. Fun times.

I think I like Quakenet, because once I think I saw somebody say something in there.

Or we played Trivia, which was equally cool.
