Okay Im sure that everyone is getting sick of hearing about valve changing the release date for Half-Life 2, but I looked at some other forums on other web sites www.gamefaqs.com and they said that Half-Life 2 will be released at another time  . I dont know about anyone else, but I don't think I can last to 2005. Can anyone confirm or deny these rumors?

It's true.

So, the first release date was only ... a year too early ?

Um... hasn't anyone learned patience by now after following HL for so long? Who cares about the release date, it'll be released when it's ready. These delays have been blown way out of proportion, and whining more will not change anything.

I wouldn't count on it being released in time. It could be, but it's best not to get your hopes up or name your children after the developers as I've found.

There had better be loads of spinkee new features that we don't know about in it, or else it's just going to be retarded- what exactly are they doing right now??? Rewriting code? How many bloody different ways are there to code something like that? :wtf:

You know Yak fighter is correct, I really wasnt whining, just wondering if it really had been delayed again, if its being delayed longer then that means that the game will be even better. Just as long as it comes out for PC before x-box thats all I care about. Their stupid magazine said that if it was delayed any longer it would come out on x-box firs.....fat......chance.

Well now I'm annoyed. Like Lep said, what are they actually doing right now? If they did in fact plan a september 03 release date, then surely there are no more technical issues to overcome - it just doesn't seem like they could possibly have anything to do that would take so long, given that before the code leak, the game was going to be ready for september 03...

I was always going to upgrade my PC when HL2 came out, but this release is going to be to a whole new hardware generation and basically means I have to wait 9 months in total for a new PC  And don't say I can just upgrade now, because it would be stupid to upgrade now in order to play a game that isn't out yet - when the game is out there will be new/better hardware, and existing stuff will be cheaper. And I can't afford to upgrade now and then.

I highly recommend you people read the full PHL article before making assumptions. HL2 is not confirmed as a 2005 release. In fact, the post and article linked quotes Doug Lombardi as saying this summer, as in... 2004... for HL2 release.

However, Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines, the first (known) Source engine license title, has been delayed to 2005. V:TM is being developed by Troika Games, and has no relation to Valve Software and Half-Life 2, aside of the engine license and a couple former Valve employees.

But, of course, take any release speculation lightly. "This summer" officially qualifies any date between June 21st and September 21st, not counting delays.

just recieved this from a source in Seattle:

Half-Life 2 sets a date
from http://money.cnn.com/2004/02/02/commentary/game_over/column_gaming/index.htm

Developer sets new release date after hackers steal game's source code.
February 3, 2004: 7:35 AM EST

NEW YORK (CNN/Money) ? When Gabe Newell, founder of Valve Software, confirmed last October that hackers had wormed their way into the developer's network and stolen the source code to "Half-Life 2," it sent shock waves through the gaming industry. "Half-Life 2," you see, wasn't just a title any gamer worth his or her salt was drooling over, it was the title industry insiders were counting on to help revive the struggling PC gaming business.

As Valve developers gathered their wits, an executive from publisher Vivendi Universal Games told media outlets that the theft would delay the game until April 2004. That date was nothing more than a blind guess, though. Valve, the only company that really had a firm grasp on the impact of the theft, wrapped itself in a cocoon, refusing all questions from the media and not saying a word about when the game would hit shelves ? until now.

Half-Life 2 is expected to help revive the PC gaming industry.
While still shying away from giving a firm date, Doug Lombardi, Valve's director of marketing, told me the company "is currently targeting this summer for the completion of Half-Life 2".

Valve does not plan to reveal any additional information until the time surrounding the E3 trade show, where the game will once again be shown this year. E3 will be held in Los Angeles May 12-14.

"Half-Life 2" wasn't the only game delayed by the source-code theft. Valve had licensed out the game's "Source" graphics engine to developer Troika, which was hard at work building "Vampire: The Masquerade ? Bloodlines," a PC role-playing game. That game, initially set to be released this year, had to be delayed to implement the same security fixes needed on HL2. It now has a target release date of Spring 2005, said Trokia co-founder Jason Anderson.

Later today, Valve will also announce Arkane Studios, an independent French developer that created the critically-acclaimed role-playing game "Arx Fatalis," has licensed the engine for a forthcoming title. The game is already in development, but does not have an announced release date.

The summer release date of Half-Life 2 is certain to once again divide gamers. Some will be relieved to finally have a date, however vague, that they can target. Others are likely to howl in outrage that the game has been delayed so far beyond its initial target date. (The game was originally scheduled to hit stores on Sept. 30, 2003.) Some ludicrous conspiracy theorists will likely begin regurgitating the ridiculous story that the source code leak was intentional, so Valve would have an 'excuse' to delay the game.

The new target date could be a heads up to savvy investors, though.

PC game sales were off sharply last year. The NPD Group, which tracks the gaming industry, recently reported 2003 sales came in at $1.2 billion, a 14 percent drop from 2002's figures.

The graphics in Half-Life 2 are radically more advanced than any PC game on the market. And many gamers are waiting on the release of this game or id Software's "Doom 3" before upgrading their video cards. Both nVidia (NVDA: Research, Estimates) and ATI (ATYT: Research, Estimates), which Valve has named the preferred graphics chip partner of the game, could see share prices begin to climb. Other hardware manufacturers could also see sales increase as the game gets closer.

Vivendi Universal (V: Research, Estimates) and Activision (ATVI: Research, Estimates) (which is publishing "Vampire...") might also see a bump as the ship dates for the games draw near.

Valve still won't discuss the source code theft, due to the ongoing investigation. That includes commenting on a recent Weblog post from a San Francisco man who claimed the FBI raided his home and seized nine PCs in connection with the investigation. No arrests were made.

It also includes the company's thoughts on the pirate versions of the game that have reportedly shown up on store shelves in Russia. That version is said to be fully playable, though with plot inconsistencies. The hackers who created that version also reportedly translated the game's text into Russian.

Again citing the investigation, Valve won't even discuss the mindset at the development studio these days, but you have to imagine that the company must be on something of an emotional upswing. A new target date is in sight. There appears to be movement in the search to find the thieves who hacked into their company and stole Valve's work. And other developers are still eager to license the game's engine.

It's not an ideal situation, but it's not half-bad.

Yes. God damn Valve for trying to release their own product when they actually finish it - in the meantime, we can endlessly nitpick at the unfinished one, and when they finally do release it, we'll have a Bitch And Moan Fest (c) until HL3 comes out.

Honestly, I'm pleased that it has been delayed. I can't afford to buy it, much less afford the time to play it or map for it! After I graduate, get a job, move, save some money.... then I will be ready for it. sounds like 2005 to me

Well I gave up caring about HL2 a long time ago, so if 2005 is when it comes out, then that's when it comes out. As I progress more with my studies in graphics programming I'm caring less and less about when other games come out, and more and more about what and how to implement in my own games.

I can't help but make fun when people are so fanboy for a game and it gets delayed again and again, it's funny dammit!!!

Valve got everyone in this huge HL2 foreplay frenzy and then they didn't deliver! It's like a huge media sexual dysfunction! They promised to f**k us good and hard, got us all horny & lubed with massive media coverage for some HL2 lovin', and what did we get? Nothing!!! And if you keep faking it, your man will never learn to truly please you Cassius!!!

First of all, you are a stupid c**t.

That being said, it's Valve's game. They make it on their time, they decide when to release it, it's their work and their time. They do not owe you s**t, and I would not have them take into account meaningless impatience on the part of someone who will automatically despise whatever product they release. I want them to release it whenever they damn well please, preferably when it is finished. The fact that their game was hacked also contributed to their not finishing it; big f**king deal. I don't honestly care; I can actually use the time between the announcement and release of a game without whining, and not just while I still have a readily availible supply of Vaseline. Bitching about how you have to sit on your ass for five months waiting for a videogame to come out will only piss me off in the end.

If they had released in September, I can garuntee you would be crying just as hard as you have been ever since. Assuming that you have never been on a project of such caliber as being the followup to what is considered one of the greatest games of all time, I'd say you don't honestly know jack s**t about the process of its creation or release, nor do I see you making any attempt to understand what you're going on about. Fine. That's beautiful. I don't ask you to. Just close your mouth.

And by the way, Gabe Newell is one sexy bastard.

Heres some insane and unwarranted optimism for you. I read somewhere that in an interview Gabe Newell said "...with the release of Half-Life 2 soon..."

Sure, in Valve's terms this probably means 2007, but maybe... just maybe, its worth noting

Valve keeping on changing their release date doesnt bother me too much
Valve have only ever given one proper release date, and now a vague 'summer'. It's the media making guesses that has made it seem like the release date keeps changing.

If they haven't finished it, yes that's fine, if they need more time to do all those... things... that they need to do after the game source was stolen. However, people are pissed off with them because of the release dates they keep giving us which seem to be blatant lies- for marketing/share, or completeness, or whatever reasons. If Valve last year had said 'another year' instead of telling us September 30th- up to the day before this in fact!- people wouldn't be as annoyed. They should just slap a "it'll be done when it's done" sticker on it if they don't know, like other, 'more experienced' companies do.

To be honest I have my University finals exams coming up and the game being delayed can only be a Good Thing, but they're toying with us, I tells ya.

Exactly Wilson. That is the annoying part. Especially for the people who bought the Radeon with HL2 thing, thinking they could play HL2 on their new card - how much will a 9600 cost in the summer? Half as much I bet. A lot of people would have saved their money until the summer if they had know this would be the release date. They could then have got either the same hardware for cheaper or better hardware for their money.

And it was not valve that gave various release dates! Vivendi made a guess at an April release just as something to tell vendors - this date was not given by valve. The only date information given by valve has been 'september 30th' and 'summer', so stop having a go at them for constantly changing the date when they haven't!

Oh, so Vivendi are going to make up random dates now, and not base them on what Valve tell them?

as Lep said, that's the thing- that Valve seems to have blatantly lied to everyone about that Sept release date. being lied to tends to piss people off. I know if I was a magazine editor I'd certainly be cautious about doing another HL2 cover story anytime soon! the continuing fiasco that is Condition Zero doesn't inspire confidence, either

an executive from publisher Vivendi Universal Games told media outlets that the theft would delay the game until April 2004. That date was nothing more than a blind guess, though. Valve, the only company that really had a firm grasp on the impact of the theft, wrapped itself in a cocoon, refusing all questions from the media and not saying a word about when the game would hit shelves ? until now.
So yes, vivendi did 'make up' the date - as you can see from the quote, valve have refused to say anything about release dates between september 29th and this 'summer 04' announcement. And Kornflakes, the dates that you were told would have been issued by vivendi, bnot valve. If vivendi was getting it's information from valve, they would have known that summer 04 was the expected release date before Doug Lombardi told CNN. If it is valve supplying release dates to vivendi, who then announce them, how is it that the new release dates come from CNN and not the publisher of the game!?

And what's to say valve lied? They announced september 30th, which they thought they would be able to stick to. They didn't say the game was delayed until the 29th, which does suck, but isn't lying. After that they have not said one release date other than 'summer 04'.

I think you're taking this quote far too literally- Vivendi would have asked Valve what was going on... But okay, fair enough that it might be Vivendi who are lying to us... burn them I say, burn!

Uncle Brasso, feeling quite young and alive this morning, after coffee, danish (she was great! :heee: ), sits and reads current HL2 thread, and breaks into Doris Day showtune.....

"Que sera, sera....whatever will be, will be, the futures not ours to see...Que sera, seraaaaaa....."

and as our Uncle Brasso retreats for more coffee and danish (damn shes great! :heee: ) he places one foot in front of the other and marches steadfastly towards his appointed goal....(man, did i mention i love danish??.. :heee: )

itll happen when it happens.....
