Wait...confusion. If DBZ and Gundam are examples? Or what Crono said are examples? Because DBZ and Gundam are pretty damn crap compared to some of the stuff Crono mentioned.
scratches buttocks

kage, you are confusing me now..

allow me to reiterate, if DBZ and Gundam are examples of anime, i think i will pass.

if mononoke is as well, shrugs it was great stuff, but i doubt i will search around looking for more of its calibre.

Anime's big feature over any other style of animation is that the good is still good, but the bad stuff seems to be exponentially worse than the average level of 'bad' in any other medium. There is some really good stuff out there (very little of which I have seen), but it's easily brushed aside by some of the pure crap that permeates through the entire genre.

Yep.

Dude, Orph, just watch a few episodes of Noir, I'm sure you can find some Torrents or even some of the episodes on Kazaa (just to preview, if you like them go buy the DVDs  )

It's a damn good show.

To be honest, I liked Dragon Ball/Z a while ago. However, I was a fan of the manga first and The 'filler' crap is annoying as hell, so I pretty much ignored the series all together, that and seeing as how it's being marketed to 5 year olds ... well. The weird thing is, that show was meant for children, however, it's massivly edited for american television (and Funimation blows at Dubbing). I can't think of any good 'introductory' series and movies though. Those are pretty much the ones (the ones I mentioned earlier) that get people hooked. Mononoke is actually pretty mild in content (not story) compared to other anime. Some might be seen as weird or something as such, but, its usually good, and like KFS said, the bad is REALLY bad cough Pokemon cough. You know it's really sad that that show is based off of the card game ... which is based off the video game ... which isn't based on anything. But, Another pretty good OAV is Angle Cop. the animation is okay by anime standards, but its pretty old, but good, just ... reframe from watching dubbed versions, since until Disney set a standard for dubbing with Mononoke dubbing was pretty bad. A few other OAVs that are good are: Aritage the Third (the actual 4 episode OAV, not the 90 minutes cut up movie), and Iria: The Ziram Animation.

Once you like some of this stuff you'll probably want to check out: Lain, Boogipop Phantom, and FLCL. Some people I know like Samurai X (just a secondary series to Kenshin, which happens to be more violent lol).

Other then that ... There are movies, which are all up to you, I mentioned a few earlier some other goodies are: Metropolis (depressing though, so watch out), X (Depressing as well, the series looks better though, since 2 hours is no where near the amount of time that Clamp's work deserves), I know some people who like Ninja Scroll, however the only thing this movie has is good animation and lots and lots of fighting, the story is ... lacking to say the least, but it's worth a view. Basically stay away from some stuff that has been picked up for American Television (except Cowboy Bebop, Trigun, and FLCL, because they're actually good).

If you actually watch this stuff you might even begin to recognize styles and such ... I can anyway.

[EDIT]
Whoa, how could I forget, the Battle Angle OAV is good as well (only 2 episodes though)
[/EDIT]

Having funny portions doesn't make anime a cartoon any more than something that makes you laugh in 'the matrix' means the matrix is a comedy. A cartoon sets out to be funny... you say you are confused by the difference, well here it is, if the point of the animation is to be funny, it's a cartoon. If it's not, it isn't. Take the example of transformers - this obviously does not set out to be funny, therefore it does not come under 'cartoon'. I did not know this until I investigated, but now I know what 'cartoon' really means, I am happy to accept the new definition.

let me try once more, for jeffery.

i comprehend that cartoon = comedy/humor/funny

i comprehend that anime = drama/serious

but as with movies, there are other genre's, this is where i am getting lost. what if its a western ( i dunno if there are western anime/cartoons or not its an example ) is there yet again another subsection of animated art to encompass these?

i guess the question is, is all anime, of japanese origin? and what do you call a cartoonish creation, that is neither anime(by definition) or cartoon(by definition)

Yes! I also said that earlier
and what do you call a cartoonish creation, that is neither anime(by definition) or cartoon(by definition)
Animation .... ? Dude, Orph, anime is the ONLY style that has it's own name. But personally, the only thing I'd call a 'cartoon' would be American cartoons: Loony Toones, MGM shorts, Roger Rabbit shorts.

But things like Disney movies I'd call animations. To me "Cartoon"s major meaning is SHORT, like a TV show or something. Full Lenth features have way too much talent and meaning to be labeled a 'cartoon'. But that's just me.

But, yes, anime means Japanese Animation, as in originated there. But now it's turning into Japanese Directed. Such that, if the director of some animation project is from Japan (as in the most likely still live there) then you'll see heavy influences of Japanese animation and culture in their work.

Something else is, if you see an animation of some sort and you know it isn't disney, and the animation is very good, look at the production team names, chances are it was animated in Japan.

Also, CG movies are neither cartoon or anime. They're ... CG. really anime is the only specific style catagory.

I don't know. I suppose there could well be completely different types of animation that none of us have seen... But I don't see how that matters, the lack of other genres doesn't make anime a cartoon.

Actually, I'm not even sure what the debate is now that you have said you see the distinction between anime and cartoons, after earlier saying "cartoon or anime, its all apples and oranges to me".

A lot of people deliberately spell my name wrong as an extremely funny (?) joke, but just in case this wasn't the plan, it ends rey, not ery  I think my spelling isn't actually right, but that's my name, and it's better than that silly Geoff spelling. In the first year of uni, I met this very worrying girl, who after finding out my name, went on to tell me that her and her friend (no, don't start getting ideas guys) had some wierdo long running thing about jeffs/geoffs, and that she always argued the J way was better. My name is Alexander Charles Samuel Stevenson. I have 2 middle names.

Look at the initials- ACSS. The reason I have 2 middle names is so that my initials wouldn't be ASS.

My parents hate me.

My grandfather was named Samuel, and he died not long before I was born, so it was in memory of him.

And they had alread decided on the Alexander part, so they didn't want to change that.

My dad went to a school reunion, he saw this guy who was a great runner at his school, and went over to him and said 'you are jeff smith (dunno if it was smith, doesnt matter), aren't you?'. The guy said no, John smith. Dad asked him if he was the running guy, and he said yes. He then went over to one of his old teachers, pointed at john and said 'see that guy over there', the teacher said 'yeah, that's jeff smith', dad replied with 'no, he's called john'. Oh, said the teacher.

I'm called jeff because 'jeff smith' was Dad's hero or something at school. And no, I'm not an amazing runner.

I have 2 middle names as well ... I'm sure most individuals couldn't pronounce 3/4ths of my name: Adam Mohamed Salam Naser

They have signifigance going from right to left: great grandfather, grandfather, father, yours truely.

Arab names are a little weird since they translate into weird things like "salam" means peace, non-slag of course. And yes, everything in my name is spelt correctly. People try to tell me how to spell my name a lot, it's pretty damn annoying, and chances are you'll mispronounce my last name because you will probably think it's spelt wrong

its odd to say the least, a japanese show, about an english country, spoken in japanese, with english subtitles.. the mix, didn't come together well IMO. in all fairness, listening to it in japanese was my only real complaint, i suppose it could be an ok show, assuming all the people who lived in it spoke english

I bought the first 2 DVDs of Noir as I was really taken by the cover art, I found it really stylish. Really thats what I like most about the whole thing, the look is great in my opinion. Problem with it is the lack of content to make up the time, so they shove in the same bloody flashback about 2 or 3 times an episode, which gets extremely annoying if you are watching episodes one after another. Sometime I will probably pick up the rest of the series, but at ?20 a DVD, its really hard to justify buying anime really. The main reason I bought the first two was that there was a buy one get one free offer on at the time.

Orph, it takes place in france, if I'm not mistaken.

Secondly, it's a show that was aired in Japan, what else would you expect it to be in?? That's like saying shows/movies here are worse because they have people speaking english in other parts of the world, which they do all the time. Also, if you want to hear it in English your only option is to buy the dvd and put on the english track ... even though they're in France. It's a pretty good show actually, I think to fully accept the story telling it has you have to watch the entire series, all the flash backs have meaning in other words. I have yet to finish the whole thing, but I'm getting there.

And orph, if you find Japanese language with english subtitles annoying or something like that, just stop now and never think or speak of anime ever again, simply because It's all in Japanese, unless it's poorly dubbed in english, which mostlikely means it will be shown on TV at some point, or there's a popular DVD coming out, but I somehow doubt you'd buy a dvd

Ghost in the shell still is my favorite anime-movie. I don't know much about anime, but that movie's great. Same goes for the Animatrix-series.

No offense, but if Ghost in the Shell and the Animatrix are your favorite anime movies, then it's really obvious that you haven't watched much.

Ghost in the Shell is damn borring in most of the movie. Seriously, watch another good anime movie and then compare. I'm not saying GIS is bad, but most of the dialog is monotonus.

Vampire Hunter D 2 is a good all round anime movie (animation, story, dialog, dubbing!, and of course, action), and (to please Orph, since he thinks English is the main language of Earth  , just kidding.) it's in English.

I wanna see Ghost in a shell... Seen half of Bubblegum Crisis, all of Neon Genesis Evangelion, all of FLCL and a bit of Trigun. Also seen Laputa, quality film.

FLCL and Neon Genesis are the best, same director too.

exactly what I said ... I know nothing of Anime.

I just watch those mainstream, famous anime-things, but I don't know a thing about anime series or anything ...

i have watched vampire hunter D ,both halves i guess, cause i saw 2 of them.. they were good.

and no, i do not get annoyed with japanese, IF its part of the movie, i watched, and enjoyed tremendously "the last samurai, it was set in japan, so one expected there to be quite a lot of japanese, so the subs were just fine.

watching an animated show, set in an english speaking country (didn't look french at all to me, but hey, what would i know) with total subs was poor IMO.. but there again, i have no real interest in wanting to like it, so, of course it was annoying.

i watched "shogun" massively japanese.. i watched "anne and the king" not japanese, but oriental i think..

the fact that it had subs, was not an issue.. but it sure didn't help.

as i always tell my wife.. "good thing someone likes it" whenever i see her eat, or read something i think is a waste of time

you, can have them, if noir is the best it gets

Noir isn't the best, but it's good. The thing you're forgetting is that the version you downloaded is NOT professionally translated, its a fansub, unless it's a DVD rip, which is hard to find actually.

Secondly, the Effiel Tower is a DEAD give away ... and if you watch more of the show, you'd find out they live in Paris.

It just seems that you 'ignorantly'/unknowingly bash something, then you get interested in it, then you seem to look down upon it after the fact, which is weird. But, if you don't like, that's fine. But, just assuming that one series represents the entire form is rediculous (which you're seeming to do by your comments). That's like someone in another country watching one or two, random, series' from America and basing an opinion on every American show. I think this conversation has happened before, just on a different subject here.

Anyway, whatever.

you crack me up crono, no place did i bash, i did however state that i was unimpressed with it.

however, i did also mention that i have seen a few anime shows, and throughly enjoyed them.. so i did not in fact bash an entire genre'

/methinks thou protests to much

if, i have indeed offended, i appologize.
