Hey, a while back we had a topic about Jet. Just wondering what you all thought about the YYY's, or if you've even heard of them.

I hate all kids bands. This includes Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs, That lizzie maguire s**t, and whatever actresses takes a job up in the music biz.
Although the lead singer of the YYY(s) isnt too bad looking I reckon  .

I <3 TICK!
How could you say that? Well, I guess it isn't THAT great, I'm just mesmorized by her screaming.
But I'd have to agree with all your other choices, especially Y-control. That song rawks!

I quite liked a couple of the songs they released. I can't remember what they were called, but one was quite energectic (and involved claymation in the video), and the other was quite slow and simple, where she actually singed instead of wailed. Though they released one song before both, which seemed to be high-pitched wailing and guitars just for the hell of it. It didn't even touch those other two, so I'm not toally convinced in getting their album in fear that it'll just be the same thing over and over, with only a few good songs.
And what exactly is a kid band? And she was on DIsney? What have you been smoking Vash?
To be honest, I got sick of all those underproduced garage rock influenced stuff that's coming out recently a while back. I'm getting into a lot of progressive stuff at the moment. Refused's last album (The Shape Of Punk To Come) is amazing; how they managed to blend elements of punk, hardcore, jazz, blues and folk music so well is beyond me. Metallica's "...And Justice For All", Nine Inch Nails' 'The Fragile", Oceansize's "Effloresce", Pink Floyd's "The Wall" and "Dark Side Of The Moon", have all been staple parts of my musical diet for the past few weeks.

Not a big fan of 'em. Problem is it's been done so much better by other bands, and the Yeah Yeah Yeah's seem to be more about the image than the music.

I know what you mean by 'kid band' (I think I do anyway) - I would say sum41 is a kid band. It's like bands that kids say 10-14 can like, that aren't crap pop bands, but at the same time they find it hard to genuinely like 'proper' album bands of the genre, because these bands aren't usually so accessable.
I know that when I was younger, it was more 'cool' to like non-pop, but at the same time, it was hard for me to genuinely like these bands, because I either wasn't able to or couldn't be bothered to appreciate the real alternative music. 'kid bands', for want of a better name, provide a way for younger people to break away from the normal poppy crap (which they may genuinely not like), while staying with something they do actually like.

Hmm, I wouldn't apply that term to the yeah yeah yeahs. If they were as accessible as Sum 41, they'd be huge by now...

Well I don't recall ever hearing a song by the yeah yeah yeahs, I was just explaining my idea of what a kid band is - no idea if it actually applies to the band in question

Hah, having a parental advisory label only makes them more attractive to people who think they aren't supposed to be allowed to have the album.
reads post below can't disagree with that since I never heard them

I guess I'd have to agree.
Anyway, I don't think the YYY's would appeal too much to young kids.

Why did they get the explicit lyric tag? I don't remember anything too terrible in it?

Yeah, I know, but parental advisory means language. Otherwise every pop song EVER would need parental advisory, as they are all about screwing, especially from boy bands ... ew.
But that song's lyrics don't deserve a mandatory parental advisory. Also last time I checked, which was a long time ago, the 'artists' had to say whether it needed parental advisory stickers or not, unless there was a massive amount of swearing then the label made it parental advisory.

If they are a band that is going to be widely popular with little kids then having one or two swear words in it will get the explicit label slapped on them... mainly because kids aren't supposed to listen to cussing according to the labels. I've got death metal and punk albums that have swearing and questionable lyrics with no explicit label because no one's either heard of them or no kids are going to want to listen to them. I have two cds from one of the most vulgar punk bands ever, The Dwarves, and they dont have the explicit label.
PS: Sum41 isn't a kids band  . Next you're going to say Offspring is one too...

Hey, that reminds me of something, Yak, have you heard Offsprings latest album at all? I haven't heard anything from it, but I was surprised to see a parental advisory sticker, I found out why though, looking through lyrics. There's like one song that has f**k like every other word, rather odd for them, to be honest.

No no, I'm well aware of their swearing, however it never seemed like just blaintant swearing.
Throw back eh?? That's awesome! I was rather 'disapointed' with their last two albums, I mean, they're alright, but, session and smash are great (I personally like session more). However, I just don't like their first album that much to be honest, like, it's got good songs on it, but the album as a whole doesn't stand close to anything they did on the two albums right after it.
[/rant/praise]
I'll have to find it somewhere then. I was rather hesitance to purchase it taking that my musical taste has wondered into other areas, but I still hold a place in my heart (and cd book for that matter) for The Offspring.

New Offspring album, eh? Is it more of him just shouting loudly and flatly over a bunch of power chords? :runs:

Hey there are bands who're talented that only play power chords. (To be honest, even though I like most of the Offsprings stuff, they're not really great musicians.)
Tool is a bad who play's mostly nothing but power chords, and in drop D, and they're awesome, so.

Tool and The Offspring may both play mostly power chords, but there's a large difference between them; The Offspring are out to make catchy pop-punk anthems, while Tool are more orchestral and progressive in their musical style. Not to mention Maynard James Keenan is possibly the greatest vocalist this side of Christian Scabbia.

Just because it's a kids band, doesn't mean it's only for kids, it means it's for kids as well as for everyone else. A band like tool aren't going to appeal to kids. Sum 41 appeals to kids and everyone else.

It's not as easy as it used to be to download the new popular songs, because fakes are circulated around the p2p networks. Also, if it's a band that only has a tiny fanbase, you're not really going to get mp3s unless they give them away. It's not always as simple as it used to be. Of course, what's wrong with just getting the album? They don't cost much.

The Offspring (i.e. now, in 2004) are undeniably pop-punk. They're just good pop-punk. Not all pop-punk is crap.

"so the idea of CDs costing the same as DVDs bewilders me somewhat. "
Think of the amount of entertainment you get from a good CD, compared to a good movie. Maybe I am abnormal, but I just can't watch a movie more than a few times, no matter how great it is. Music on the otherhand, I can listen to for decades.

Do they raelly cost that much in Oregon? That's hard to believe. Down here, they've lowered almost all CD's down to around $10. At Best Buy they have plent for $6 even. I think they bare trying to compete with p2p and maybe even iMusic, or at least generate the same popularity? I dont know.
