I was thinking the same I'm afraid Tracer - a crate storage facility is about as standard a theme as has ever been for an FPS level, certainly isn't "unique"

I think the portion you convieniently missed out highlighting - "make a map with some kind of twist to it" - is probably the most defining part of the contest. The last part - "The only limitation is it should be a playable Half-Life Deathmatch map" - isn't meant to be seen as overruling the entire part before it, its saying "make a map with a twist in it that is a playable HLDM map". You can't just go all out on some kind of twist and not put in items, spawn points, or playable r_speeds, in other words.
I'll take a look at the map, but from the screenshots, it looks like a really nice level, yet in a very standard DM style theme.

Its not that I have anything against TB entering his map - its a cool little map and I like the entity work in it - but the fact is if he can enter this, what stops me entering a little industrial map with nothing to set it apart from any other industrial map? I just feel its defeating the point of having the contest rules state "make a map with a twist", if there is no twist in the entered maps. I do want to see lots of entries but I'd like to see entries which are different to your average HLDM map, and cratesis, while a nice enough map, doesn't stand out to me as something different.
Its not my decision that matters anyway, I'm just saying my viewpoint on the issue. If TB is allowed to enter this map then meh, whatever, it will make no real difference to the contest. I would however rather he made something new and different - not only does it mean he is adhering the spirit of the contest more, but it also means we get a new TB map

true.. well i said my piece.. and IMO if its a choice between 3 entries and 10, i chose 10
we can sort out the disqualified later.. and it motivates.
worrying about this is akin to thinking we will open the doors to 100 killboxes.. personally i have not seen a massive influx of new members..
although, we could say, you have to BE a member of the pit.. that might get us a few new people

I have - which could be regarded as no going flatshaded, but as they are for special effects I think its fine. Anyway, if you use flat colour textures for most of a map, surely that counts as a twist

Orph I dont like your colors, try shades of red complimented by a desaturated green or a navy blue.

Inquiry: do sky's count against the flatshade theme?
can we use a default, or custom sky?

Orph: It really depends, if your doing the flat shade.. which is see you are, then either go black or use a flat shaded sky. A refrence to this would be ReNo's map, which uses flat shaded sky to give it more depth.

Crackerjack just means that rather than use a typical skybox like "desert" or "night" or whatever, you could make your own one that looks flatshaded and use it instead. You would still make a skybox as usual, but in the map properties you would specify your own new skybox rather than one of the normal ones. Flatshaded skyboxes are pretty easy to make in photoshop or whatever, since you just work with blocks of solid colour rather than having to worry about shading and blending and stuble effects.

i looked at TB's map, it may not be unique, but it is original.. it has more gadgets than any map i have seen in a while.. "squash a rock, make a crate"
very cool
i still vote "YES"

I certainly understand ReNo's perspective, and I do plan on making a small entry for the competition if I can find the time regaurdless of whether I am allowed to enter Cratesis. However I think that it does have a "twist" which is significant enough for it to fit the competition guidelines.

im not too late for the questions am i?
well i was wondering, you said this has to be a playable HLDM map, would it be good enough if the map was 1v1, or maybe 2v2. my theme idea kinda suits the 1v1 2v2 style play.
id give my theme away but i fear people would steal it
