Hey with the big E3 show coming up next week. What would you like to see?.

Me personally, I'm of course, looking forward to the next batch of HL2 goodness.

Also, I want to know about Xbox 2. Apparently Sega has a big announcement (getting back into console biz?)

I have been priviledged enough to attend this twice, but alas, my connection has been cut!(pitiful sobbing ensues).

Heres a link to gamespys take on the thing, with other links within the article to vendors and titles.

I'll definately be looking out for Xbox 2 info, and Sega's announcement is intriguing. I'd rather they don't go back into the console manufacturing business though - I like them as a 3rd party company to be honest. I'm keeping my finger's crossed for it to be Shenmue 3

Otherwise...I'm REALLY hoping for information on NICO (the sequel to ICO) and Phantom Crash 2 - both of which were spoken of ages ago and nothing has been heard since

One thing I'd like to see...me being there!!!!! I didn't get to goto GDC, and I can't goto E3 due to my final project!

Actually I'm not that mad about it.

I'd really like to see some stuff on Quake 4, as well as more demos of Unreal Engine 3. I definitely want to see some stuff on Xenosaga II and FFXII.

And as always, the Booth Babes

I'd love for Sega to make consoles again. They're the best at it (hardware wise), they just have terrible advertisements (Besides the Japanese Ad Campaign for the Sega Saturn).

I'd also like to see some stuff on NICO (I hope it stands up to its underrated predecesor).

Of course, I want an explination why I don't have a copy of HL2 in my hands right now.

And I'm always up for seeing what Konomi, id, and NAMCO have to offer.

I'll leave this area blank, since if I filled it, I would be bashing XBox  (happy, Reno? ).

Hehe, that'll do Crono

I wouldn't agree with you on Sega being the best in terms of hardware. The Saturn was primarily a 2D console, with the addition of 3D support as an afterthought when Sega saw the advances Sony and Nintendo were making in that field. The Dreamcast was a wonderful and underrated console, but mostly due to its games - the console itself broke damn easily and was the noisiest thing to ever grace a sitting room. Good controllers though...I'm glad the Xbox uses a similar design

Reno, you're saying that like there's something wrong with 2D. The "problem" you're talking about is exactly why I love my Saturn.

The dreamcast is not that loud, nothing near a PS2, just because of a different amount of fans. But Sega's hardware IS very good. They're responsible for some influence on the GameCube and GBA design. And if you've used either you will see what I'm talking about (speed and efficiency wise).

Also, when the PSone came out (Saturn was out almost a year before hand as well, if I'm not mistaken ... here anyway) Sony had a policy that games could ONLY be 3D. And the very good games that made that console (Excluding FFVII) were 2D!

And in the 2D area, the Saturn and Sega in general blew/blows the compitition away.

Also, there's some reasoning behind this. Sega is mainly a Japanese company, while Sony is Japanese, Playstation is heavily developed between Japan and US divisions. Talk to a lot of Japanese/Korean gamers, and they LOVE 2D Classic RPGs. So, I don't see how Sega took a bad turn when going in that direction.

However, I don't think you should or have to agree with me. Since there are some other 'subjects' we see eye to eye on

(Also since Saturn was out before the PSone, Sony knew what they had to 'improve' upon before releasing their console: 3D capabilities, color pallete, so on and so forth.)
AMD64; 3.5GHz!!! 256 Meg of ram and a 500MHz graphics chip, the CPU has a 1mb l2 cache , whilst the graphics [ATI] offers 10MB of ram, mabe they'll get the new x800's?? so what ever happened to them G5's that microsft supposably bought for the Xbox2?
AMD 64 isn't too grand (1Mb L2 Cache is standard). Now if it were a FX-53, that would be different (about a $800 difference).

I'm confused ... are you sure it's only 256Mb of ram?? It doesn't make sense to have that speed of processor and that little amount of ram, especially for Games.

You certainly make good points - 3D isn't necessarily BETTER than 2D, but the hardware to power it is surely more complex, and as such I find it hard to pin down any reasoning behind Sega making "better hardware". Whether it was out first or not, it still wasn't as good at 3D....though looking at the original Shenmue running on the saturn I'm tempted to take that back.

As for the Dreamcast noise issue, it is VASTLY louder! I'm on my second Dreamcast and they have both been the noisiest consoles I've ever heard. Its not a fan issue but the disc drive I believe, it makes a racket as it jumps around. I've found the PS2 to be pretty near silent actually, but perhaps the Dreamcast has removed all hearing sensitivity

Don't get me wrong though, I love my Dreamcast, and I'm horribly protective over it when people try to slag it off (much like I am with any console, to be fair), but its more for the controller and the games than what hardware is hidden away in its little white body.

I like multiplayer games on consoles because they are fun to play with friends, but I wouldn't buy one myself. I am looking forward to seeing what this new two-screen handheld console from nintendo is going to look like, I can't imagine how that is going to look. Then obviously there's D3 and HL2. I doubt Quake 4 will be showing very much though, since KFS is going to be a level designer for it, and he doesn't start until July...

They increased the cooling on the PS2 because the more hardware demanding games (Vice City) were causing things to overheat and in some cases break.

AMD64; 3.5GHz!!!
I read an article in Linux format recently where they shoved an AMD64 processor in a machine and ran Mandrake 9.2 64-bit edition on it and benchmarked it. The speed was actually 5.67GHz! I think they might want to use a 64-bit OS...

I never see that much of E3 and only see the media fall-out a few weeks later (released videos, screenshots etc). I just want to see HL2. After all, it should (when it is released...eventually) keep me occupied for about 5 years!

I just got my PSM 100% mag. and there are new screens for MGS3, and a whole list of what you can do in it, and I must say that now my attention is on MGS3 now.

I would also like to see what is the deal with HL2, one of my x-box friends says that HL2 for x-box will come out first, and he is really convinced about it to, just because his x-box mag said so, any truth to this (I dont think so, in fact I think hes a moron)?

OHH and Halo 2, it was delayed (big surprise  ), and I would like to see the master chief in action again  .

I don't see how the xbox with a graphics processor from 3 generations ago is going to be able to run HL2 without a big drop in the eye candy. Seems unlikely to me that it will be out on xBox first, but that's just a guess.

HL2 on X-Box won't have a mod community, so I doubt it would come out first. Unless Valve has some sort of trick up their sleeves...

I would think that HL2, if A) it comes out at all and B) comes out on consoles it would be on the Xbox first. It is the closest to a real computer, after all. However, there's no way HL2 would be released for Xbox first over the computer, since the only reason HL was such a lasting success was the modding community.

As for E3, I expect nothing, so I will be pleasantly surprised by whatever happens.

HL2 is only coming out on the Xbox out of the current consoles, though they mentioned it may be put out on the sequel consoles to the PS2 and GC if it was appropriate at the time. I personally think the release times will be close together, like with Deus Ex 2.

And? Makes sense since the memory chunk size is 64, yet it still optimises 32-bit code (Eat that Itanium!)

Gorb, I totally forgot about Silent Hill 4!! Thanks for the reminder.

Reno, I said it the first time I said I loved Sega hardware. It's more efficient with instructions and power. The reason why the Dreamcast sounds so loud is because there's barely any fan noise to cover the sound. With the PS2 Fan noise is all you hear.

Also, taking that the Saturn was almost a year older then the PSone, Sony had a nice blueprint of what they had to surpass in almost every area. However, if you look at the specs you'll see that they just incresed the registers for the video and the palette size for the colors. Other then that a Saturn and Playstation (disregarding the actual achitecture and programming languages used) they're the same machine.

All I know is my flatmate complains about the noise of the Dreamcast if I'm playing it with the TV muted when he is in bed, but he's never noticed the PS2  Seriously though, whatever the reason for it sounding louder, the fact it DOES sound louder is the problem.

I know little of the Saturn's internal architecture, so I won't doubt you - I just recall reading about how 3D support was essentially a tacked on feature. The truth behind this I've no idea.

Not nessesarily. The PS2 could be louder, but with a constant sound. The Dreamcast is by no means constant. It's kind of like falling asleep when someone is playing a console game nearby, all you can hear is them pressing the buttons because it's the one sound in the room that isn't constant.

The actual level of the noise is arguable ... and I don't have a dB device so I can't measure them :\

Like I said though, the Saturn is made for 2D games. The 3D stuff was/is pretty flakey (kind of like suped up SNES graphics) ... but it worked just as well as the PSX except that the PSX was faster (in 3D) and had more colors.

But then again ... I tend to play my Saturn more then my Playstation

Don't you see, it doesn't matter Crono! I care not which has a higher dB output! The dreamcast is more noticeable in terms of sound output than the PS2, will that do?!

Anyway, something I had forgotten about but just went for a new check on - FFVII: Advent Children. Turns out some new screens have been released - including pictures of Tifa and....THE TURKS! Woohoo, I'm a happy chappy! If you are interested, check them out here...

http://www.adventchildren.net/ff7ac/media/screens.htm

Fingers crossed a new trailer will come out during E3 with footage of these in action, since they did say more info would be released during E3.

Sure, why not.

However, please realize, you're talking about frequency (or rather consistency of the noises) and not amplitude (loudness), there's a difference

LOL Crono, don't worry I have a reasonable understanding of sound, I had the displeasure of having two sound related modules in my first year of uni. I admit not all of it sank in, but I am aware of the difference between amplitude and frequency  The point here wasn't to discuss the science behind the sound however, just to point out that the PS2 is nowhere near as audibly annoying as the Dreamcast was. I hope this puts an end to the issue

in that order.
I think you're going to be disappointed Orph, on all four points.
you gotta admit though, it would be a great year for gaming if it happened

can i help it if i like games, few others do

i figure, if you're going to do something wrong, you may as well do it right.
Firaxis have already started compiling plans/ideas/user feedback for Civ 4 Orph, don't be too pessimistic  I can't wait personally for when it comes.. and number 3 is nearing its 4th year of life so it's about overdue for an update

Fallout 3 is in development Orph so you will no doubt find out more soon enough (though perhaps not at THIS e3), and HL2 is quite likely to make it out during this summer. Personally I think the only unlikely one in your list is Duke Number Forever...did you notice its intials are DNF?

Fallout 3 isn't in development anymore. It was cancelled a few months ago I believe. As for Civ 4, all they have to do is slap Alpha Centauri with a new engine and a few tweaks and its done... but I'm certain they'll f**k it up just like they f**ked up Civ 3.

sighs

why did you have to remind me how badly they messed up on civ 3

i actually played civ II longer than any other game, if you were to talley up the total hours involved.. almost 3 solid years, uninterrupted by much.

civ 3 lost my allegiance, when a elite wooden ship, sunk my steel battle ship that had just came out of port.. the battle points vs. kill ratios were badly off in civ 3.

as for fallout 3, i didn't know till today, that it was even considered a possibility.. shame if you are correct yak..

IMO, alpha centauri was not as good, or in depth as civ II, i would not be happy if civ 4 were an alpha centauri 2

I believe that is an issue being addressed almost certainly Orph, well, you'd hope so the amount of people i've seen complaining about the ridiculousness of the combat calculator (sometimes)..

my example is losing 3/4 modern armour (all Vet) to 2 fortified Cavalry in a size 5 city... I got the city, but was still miffed and baffled to say the least

alpha centurai aint too bad.. i still think Civ 2:ToT and Civ 3 are the greatest instalments of the series.. but we could sit and debate that til the cows come home

AC was good except for the fact that it was way too easy and it had economic balance issues. I bought the last two wonders straight up and had like 10000 dollars left.

The problem with Civ3 wasn't just that the combat was screwy. I could mostly look past that, except when I'd lose a marine and tanks to a phalanx fortified in a jungle.

-The AI was beyond stupid.
One time I was in the early stages of modern times, with riflemen and tanks, and I went to war with China, who had nothing better than cavalry. They sent about 50 units against one town I had which was defended by a cannon and two riflemen, and I managed to kill them all but lose the city. They spent their entire army taking one city and then razing it, so I had to waste my time marching into their country unapposed and burning all their cities. That was a good plan on their part.

-It ran like crap
It was slow, took ages to finish turns for the AI, and was too bloated

-The horrible territory grabbing
Every time some civ built a town on one uncontrolled square in my territory I wanted to tear my hair out. Every time it became a race to colonize the tundra of a few worthless islands I just stopped playing.

Instead of wasting everyone's time they should make a Colonization 2. I'd be so happy!

AC had some cool features to it, like underwater bases and using terrain more. Always fun building a huge mountain to piss off the neighbours  And have to agree about Civ3 being silly, especially with the land-grabbing. The resource system was also annoying, especially with how the AI dealth with it...
