No, My parents were invited to a private event held by a schmaltzy Attorney firm who hold "movie nights" several times a year for their employess and clients . Dinner, drinks, the whole schebang. I went as a favor to me dear old mother. They lease out a little theater in downtown proper(LA), fed and drank everybody royally before the flick. I must admit it was fun.

I saw Troy last night (as well). It was badass, but something was missing ... I'd discuss some other minor gripes I have with the film, but most people haven't seen it ... lets just say I was looking forward to seeing something happen and it never did. :\

I heard it was really bad. From a lot of people. And this isn't critics mind you.

I saw both Red Dragon and The Shining this evening. I highly recommend both as essential viewing (even though Edward Norton can't act very well as a protagonist, the antagonist in Red Dragon was an interesting character).

which version.. the remake was superb.. even without nickolson.. i'd have prefered the movie followed the book a bit closer, but we can't win them all

"pickabar ... what the hell is pickabar?"

Secondly, Troy was good, even though they focused on Achelies a little too much. Most everything was very close to the Iliad (besides the dialog of course).

But in all adaptations you expect change, I think the final product was good ... except for one thing ... grr.

Really? I heard otherwise. From everyone otherwise. Apparently they changed a lot of stuff, like taking out the gods.

They focused on the human happenings from The Iliad. They also focused on somthing that is lacking in most other movies, character development.

I'm fine with the changes they made. And even with the changes they made, it is still The Iliad.

And if someone tells you some movie is bad because its not spot on to what it was adapted from, smack them.
It doesn't make any sense to replicate something identically in another form of media.

This film is NOT the book. If you want to read the iliad, go read it. If you want to see a good adaptation of the Iliad, go see Troy.

Its kind of like Silence of the Lambs is the best movie out of that trillogy, but Red Dragon is the best book to movie transition (as in closest to the book).

There are degrees of freedom that should be taken when adapting something, and by no means does Troy step out of that boundry.

I can understand that. It's just a lot of people say it's 3 overblown hours of embarssingly cliche hollywood epic. And apparently Brad Pitt is the miscast of the century. I'll end up seeing it anyway, but to perfectly honest, you're the first person to actually comment positively upon it.

My opinion about Troy

PLUS
  • Impressive action scenes
  • Good acting by Eric Bana
  • Character development
MINUS
  • It's sad that maybe crucial scenes were scrapped from the scenario for just another "I-am-Brad-Pitt-and-I'm-Lying-near-naked-in-my-tent"-scene. Also, the end shot, when the camera fades out on him ...
  • At the end, they don't stay very close to the book: + Agamemnon does not die (when he returns from the war, he is murdered by his wife) + Achilles gets shot at the Trojan walls, he's not even inside the Horse, ffs + The Trojans have to make a hole in their 'unbreakable' walls, but in the movie, they just pull the horse inside through the gate ... no, really ... big mistake ... that's what the horse's all about !
I had a good time watching it, but as I've read/translated the Illiad several times for school purposes, I couldn't help noticing these mistakes.

I watched Troy yesterday; I think it's mostly a good adaptation of the Iliad, even though they changed a couple of details, but the story was overall respected. And the artistic direction is amazing!!! The architecture, the music, and the horse!!! I really liked the horse; this is exactly what naval invaders would build; a rough sculpture made with pieces of boats. I give it two thumbs up.

I saw Troy recently too. It was a very good film though I found difficult to enjoy at times, simply because I didn't know who to be rooting for  Nobody was truly bad - they all had noble causes for their battles and tribulations.

not really, the japanese of the time actually believed they had every right imaginable to attack pearl.. and i tend to lean strongly toward the allied side.

Uh, that's nice, but unlike you and Pearl he's a) not biased towards any side and b) both sides seem to have noble causes, perhaps unlike the Japanese and their empire building. Anyway we all know Pearl Harbour was a recylced Frankenstein of a film and difficult enough to watch

PS I haven't seen Troy or really know what it's about, so if it's not noble bitch to Adam

me personally? how can i not be unbiased, but seriously, the Japanese of the time considered it noble, or a noble cause, who are we to decide what exactly quantifies the level noble?

i am not truly comparing the Iliad to pearl the movie either, just commenting on being able to watch a show and separating my ideals from the right and wrongness of the situations that sparked the stories.

yes, i am sleepy again, just got in from Pittsburgh, if my post makes no sense.. thats my excuse.

Noble causes? The greek king uses his brothers wifes infidelity as an excuse to rule the world?.

Helen cheats on her husband, leaves him, starts the biggest war the world has seen to date, sees how her lovers brother gets killed because of it, watches Troy burn because of it? Noble?

Sounds more like a bad soap opera to me. I enjoyed the movie, just Brad Pitt was all wrong in his part IMO.

OK, so going to war over Helena was a little over the top, but the men who served him, such as Odysseus (wrong spelling i'm sure) were very honest noble men. Would you support him because he was fighting for his country, or Paris who stole Helena because they were in love? Neither were in the right or wrong - that was my issue with the film. Films are generally a bit of escapism where you can root for one side and boo and hiss at the others

Well, not really. I thought Brad Pitt wasn't bad at all in Troy. (He seems arrogant enough to play Achilles to me). After seeing a lot of his better films, I think my view of him is much higher then most other people's.

But, I just think Sean Bean kicks ass anyways  (Why was Goldeneye the last good bond film? 006.)

Oh, and since he doesn't get enough credit, Eric Bana was bad ass ? I didn't think he would look cool with that amount of facial hair, but I was proven wrong.

Orlando Bloom can go f**k him self. I hope he dies. So the world will be rid of his terrible acting!

He sucks in everything. The only reason why he's somewhat barable in LOTR is because his acting is over the top and out there.

Well ... no. He's probably one of the only reason why stupid, shallow, vain girls went to see Troy.

Secondly, something I thought was really funny was back when Pirates of the Caribbean came out. I saw some interview with Johnny Depp and they were asking him about the cast.

They asked something like "what was it like to work with Geoffrey Rush" he was excited and said it was awesome and talked about how great an actor Rush is .... then they asked "what about Orlando" and his response was something like ...
"Yeah, Orlando is a great ... guy."

I also think Bloom had rat s**t on his upper lip for that "mustache".

Oh, no he was good as Legoals. But, the reason why is because his acting is over the top and cheesy. However, it fit perfectly in with the fantasy epic feel of LOTR. I never said he was bad in LOTR, just everything else.

However, If I had to say what he was best in (using that term loosly) besides LOTR, it would be Troy. Because as much as I hate him, he wasn't painful to watch (again over the top-ness semi-suited the role) ... unlike in Priates.

just got back from viewing "Troy"

not quite a 2 thumbs upper, but a long way from trash..

knowing what must happen, takes a bit off the top IMO...

Mr. Pitt, wasn't so bad.. no worse than Kirk Douglas playing similar roles..

its rather refreshing to see the hero of normal proportions.. of late, if you are not as big as "The Rock" you can't seem to make it in herodom

we seem stuck in a rut, we only seem to be posting 5 star movies here of late, lets break that tradition with "The Order"
my wife loves this genre of movies, so i can believe her when she said "IT BLOWS"

2 thumbs down..
