Great, now we have to get Gwil so the three least productive mappers all have at least one map each.

whos the others?
me not so sure if hogwarts would be allowed in as it is quite high spec [ r_speeds 1200 in some areas]. although it will be released for HL2.

I'm sure it would be allowed under the theme of harry potter. R_speeds aren't a huge issue, they just have to be reasonable.

For the competition what would the acceptable limit for r's? Should I break 1200 for the sake of some extra prettiness?

It doesn't make a dent in the framerate but mine is capped at 85. How
high could I get away with do you think considering only about four
people should be playing it?

So eh, would only be using the default HL textures be considered a decent theme, or crap as really there's not a twist to it at all? :/

As I told you before - if just using the default HL textures is your theme, then it's essentially just a regular HLDM map. Think more creatively!

Pah, that's why I asked here, second opinion! I can't come up with a creative theme, coming up with creative architecture's hard enough as is.

You need no second opinion! My opinion is absolute! My opinion is LAW!
Hugh Lloyd, you are going to come up with a creative theme and like it!

I was just wondering, is 900-1000 rspeeds fine for this map? I want to do some things that will make my map have better atmosphere all around but I'd like to do it properly.

boo's and hisses
trillian sucks, every time i needed to send a file, or a voice chat, or a web cam, the other party had it and couldn't accept..
for an all-in-one program, it isn't very one compatible

It does have bugs, but it's better than running 4 or 5 chat programs at once.

I agree ... the first version was horrible ... every time I tried to send a file, the thing crashed. Now it's OK for file sending, but I do miss a webcam/voicechat function. There are plug-ins for it, but they only work with Trillian, not cross-platform.
Still, the skins, and the control over connections really buy me over

It's looking increasingly like i'm not going to have time to make a map for this competition  I might try and convert one of my unreleased FLF maps though as it seems FLF is a bit dead in the water at the moment, and especially with HL2 around the corner i'd like to give my maps at least half a chance before they're forgotton

ARGH! I just formatted my computer due to numerous problems, and while I backed up all my editing stuff, I forgot that all my recent maps (including my contest map) were saved in a folder on the desktop! Looks like its back to stage one for me

You need a separate patition, one for windows/ your OS. and one for everything else you dont want to lose when you format.
I learnt this a few months back and boy has it helped me!

I backed up a whole lot of files, I just forgot I had the new map stuff saved on the desktop. I'm not hugely bothered to be honest, it should be easy enough to rebuild, and I'll probably do things a bit differently this time around (for better or wose). Good idea about having a seperate OS partition Sloth, I'll keep that in mind, but I must say its good to clean everything out once in a while.

Just got back to doing a bit of mapping last night and i'm going to see if I can squeeze a map out in time. Won't be anything spectacular or large as I tend to spend months on my maps. I might just try and make a couple of small 'fun' maps (read: not killboxes...ok maybe one  ).

That's a problem. Anything that high is a poor design. Work some of those fancypants vis-blockers in there and reduce that s**t.

I don't think the design is poor, but inferno is sporting some masively big rooms... It really only seems to happen in these "big rooms"...
I'm not slopilly mapping, I've taken great care to have no sawing brushes, or uneeded brushes (except for when I am absolutely forced to)

Nice, -- what is the map's name? What's the theme/setting?
Suggestion: This might not be a good idea, but maybe you should beef up the light values on your texture light\s?

(Am I the only one who got "page cannot be displayed" ???)
Ok. So it appears I jacked up my r_speeds by having rooms that have a little to much room in them... I would much rather though, try to finish a map that steps over... er, jumps over the boundaries of r_speeds rather than making a map that is nothing but corridors and small rooms all over.
