This is going to sound like a dim question/already answered, but I
can't be bothered to search through 14 pages of posts to find the
answer: are extra resources such as sprites allowed in this comp? I've
only just started looking at this competition, and I'm thinking of
looking at doing a jungle map, but I need a quick way for (flatshaded)
leaves and sprites seem to be the answer (or at least for the way I
want to do it). Allowed or not?

I agree to an extent orph, but there is a difference between arrogance
and pride, and unfortunately there are quite a lot of people who either
don't know this, or are afraid to tread the thin line between them.

I didn't think you were referring to Ferret, I just thought you were
sort of generalising how all mappers should be, but I guess I was
wrong. Regardless, I'll put in a few other cases...
Some people are justified in being proud of their work.
Others, should take more pride in it. (you  )
Others still.... have no clue how awful their maps truly are

It might be wise to check my profile to see this room. The open areas Ferret showed, still aren't quite what I'm making... (r_speeds not shown because I wasn't in developer mode  )

Im at a loss as to what room you are referring to.
Reno I am proud of that map  its like 99% on all limitations and it takes up the whole WC grid! It plays beautifuly on full servers and I think its pretty nice to look at! But it is definately not the best map out there  you sir are charged with that one looking at YOUR maps.

I'm proud of most of my work too but no way could any of them be
classed as the best maps out there! Thanks for the compliment though

It would have to be re tallied every month or so... New maps (and possibly better ones) would be introduced.

KungFuSquirrel would win. He's already the most famous person here and I'm willing to assume a considerable number of registerees here are due to knowing his famous household name.

There is no "best" in any non-measurable situation such as mapping,
there is only most popular. I'd be for it, it could be done by having a
top ten in your profile that you can edit via the control panel. Would
be nice to be able to show or hide this on your profile by choice, but
whether hidden or not it still contributes to the overall top ten stats.

Tut tut, trying to get a head start with the public vote are we  Why not upload/e-mail it to just me, and on the date I can 'release' it for you?

if you people have enuff trust of me to keep the map to myself, i would like to get a head start on the reviews of these maps.. if you are sure its a finished map, and such, send me the links to them..
i don't want my reviews to look like critiques, so please be sure the map is completed beforehand.
those of you who would rather i not review your maps, please speak up now, cause i would rather not hurt any feelings later, especially my own since reviews and the pages thereof are extremely time consuming..
thanx

Is anyone else actually working on a comp map still? This thread seems to have gone very quiet regarding progress...
Speak up people

The deadline is nearing and I've been entirely uninspired. I'll
certainly try and get something in, even if its just as basic remake of
the doomed flatshaded map.
So much for multiple entries eh!

I too had a fair bit of trouble coming up with an idea I could run with and when I did, it was this weekend just gone, so that one won't be finished for the competition
I've had to use an older unreleased map instead, but I think its turned out pretty well - though my weapon placement leaves a lot to be desired  (I actually attempted it this time!). I'd forgotten how long it takes to do weapon placement...I was going a good 6 hours last night!
edit: thinking about it, I should probably get dm_pulse finished too - so that's me sorted for multiple entries

Hehe, its the only way to learn I suppose! I may attempt to do
something with px_selfless as well, but I don't know what I could do to
it that would make it adhere to the "themed" part of the contest, as
its really a rather generic map setting.

Flatshading won't work with a map like this in my opinion, you need definition and flatshading doesn't really allow for that.

yup, the flatshading kills any sense of perspective. the very opposite of the cross hatching in the original.

yeah, dont get so cocky, there's prolly a mapper outside of SP just waiting to unleash a kick bottom map that'll win the compo
It would've been nice if there were prizes tho', if other sites can get sponsorship then SP could prolly also get some if Lep asked around. Something like a couple of graphics cards as prizes isnt going to be much of a problem, even for a small company. Trade prices for OEM 9800 pro's are under ? 120 in the UK, prolly much cheaper in the US.
If the company gets a banner ad to run on SP for 12 months in return, then thats a pretty cheap way of advertising and targeting a specific audience. To get it in perspective - putting a small entry in the paper version of the Yellow Pages costs close to ?1,000 and most companys do a lot more advertising than that.
Maybe Lep will get of his lazy arse and get prizes sorted for the next compo

jesus christ. Who said I thought my map was going to win?~? Ask any of my friends, or take another look at how I respond to topics or anything else. I doubt I'm going to win. I wanted prizes over all because I thought it would drive more outside influence into this community. So stop jumping down my throat for thinking I have an ego or some crap like that. Jesus campaign junkie can explain just how much I hate my own work.
