When i am making my map, hammer decides that after i have edited a brush, it will randomly stop and end up somewhere else.
It can't be my specs, athlone xp 2500, gf4 mx440, 512 pc2700
It even does this in flatview :S

Could be anything, in some of my cases my map is too big in the 2D views so I have to scroll/zoom in a lot to get Hammer to respond fast enough for my tastes. If this happens from a fresh small map then my suggestion means nothing. If your map is large though, try zooming in on all your 2D views so that it doesn't have to render so much on your screen at once.

What is it that is "stopping and end(ing) up somewhere else"? Is it
your 3D view, your mouse pointer, the 2D views, or something else?

Sounds like a dodgy mousewheel. Mine used to do it sometimes.

It could be a fiew things: (not sure though, just theories)
Make sure you have "center on camera after movement in 3d". Even though it doesn't sound like you're moving your 3d camera 1 second after you spawn an object, just check it anyway. Gotta check anything when trouble shooting
Two things: When you say "stop", do you mean, hammer freezes up on you? (a,la stops responding, then responds normally after a few seconds), or, that hammer freezes, AND your position in the 2d Camera moves?
Check this as well - Do you have any other version of WC / Hammer on your hardrive? They might conflict with each other (I'm not sure... Hammer and WC ARE beta, and aren't the most stable editing tools I've ever seen). I think Hammer itself isn't the most stable of the WC series.
You say hammer. What version? Beta 3.5? beta or are you using 3.4?
There may not be a solution. WC 2.1's 3d corrupted for absolutely no reason for me -- and the damage was permanent. Hammer seemed to crash every time I finished compiling a map. Happened all the time.
If all else fails, try another veresion of WC/VHE. :\ I hope this helps ya m'ioght. Doubt I'm right, just trying to shed some light.

This usually just happens, after i've saved my map, and for a few seconds. Then it will go back to normal.

Try lowering the number of undo levels or the 'back clipping plane' level (in Hammer options), though my lower-spec computer doesn't have a problem with really high settings. Try upgrading to 3.5 if that doesn't help.

un-install hammer>run spybot>run regclean>reboot>re-install hammer.
if this fails, try loading another rmf.

I used to have lag problems in hammer whenever I tried to edit the snarkpitcrewmap. My only solution was to hide like 75 of the map that I wasn't bothering with at the time. Then I got a new computer and haven't had a problem since. I'd think you're using a crappy computer that can't handle your huge map. (and by crappy, I'm saying around p3 650, 256mg ram, geforce1)

rmf files generally aren't portable from one version of WC to the next... Trying to do so generally makes the file un-usable in any version. Try WC 3.3 ? It's about as close as to hammer as it gets, and I find its more reliable then any version of hammer or WC.
Use the map file when trying to port the map to another version of WC.

mine works error-free.
run "msconfig" turn off anything non-essential.

THis could be because you got 2 or more maps already open in hammer. this happens to me when 2 apps are using opengl. try closing one of the maps that are open if there are 2 or more. also try closing all other apps using opengl.

After reinstalling hammer, did you definately get the most up to date FGD? It may be the case that you are using entities or entity settings that were added in a recent FGD, and once you reinstalled you were using an older one that caused problems with those settings. That could explain the crashing...though obviously the lagging is still an issue.

Just wondering, did you ever solve the problem of hammer lagging? If not I'm guessing you might need new video drivers.

Saving isn't going to slow things down noticeably... If it is, get your HDD checked. It might be damaged if all disk accesses are taking noticeably long times. I have never found saving to slow things down, even momentarily. (Obviously, there will be a slight delay, but it won't be noticeable considering the speed of modern disk drives)
