my reply was mostly to beer hunter who said Iw as being cocky. I thought you were joking from your "ho ho ho's and your smily face" Anyways I was in a really bad mood and should not have been surfing the web that night for this reason.

If the winner is really good, I might buy them the game of their choice, maybe. Otherwise you'll win some Hong Kong related tat, like a nodding-head Hello Kitty for your car  I'm still thinking about it.

The big question though is would it be more disturbing if an army of Hello Kitties were all nodding in unison?

Argh I can't be bothered / don't know what to do with my map! I've remade it to essentially the same level I'd reached before (albeit looking a little better, in my opinion) and once again, I'm uninspired and bored of working on it. Oh well, at least there is another week to finish it off.

Just a lil update; I've added some start music for when the player joins, and been fixing up some lighting and adding a bit more detail. I'm off to compile now, so don't expect to hear from me for about another hour and 30 mins.
But I will expect to hear some applause [ even if it is for me not being here  ]

Host as in on a server, or just the files? If its just the files I've a feeling it will be somewhat pointless, as Lep will no doubt host them here at the snarkpit.

I'm sure Finger would say otherwise! While I'm sure all of us here know who won, I think it would be nice to put the results up for completions sake, and for outside visitors.

I will be disconnecting my computer from the internet from now on until
my map is finished. I'm sick and neglecting it and I'm putting aside
other maps that I need to finish. This is getting ridiculous, natural
selection is too damned addicting. So without further ado, ciao.

Well, I could try and set up a hldm server, but that wouldn't be until I get a new pc, which im not of when, otherwise im stuck with a intel celeron 500mhz lol. And my upload speed is only 128 until I upgrade.

Hi.
I've just registered
I saw your competition anounced on planethalflife yesterday, and so I started making a map using flat shades only
My question is: What are acceptable r_speeds? The max i've got, right now, is 1470 wpoly, 0 epoly.
Average is around 800...
Is that ok?

1470 is a bit on the high side. i think general opinion around here is that wpoly should stay below 1000, if at all possible. if your polys only peak that high i one area, then it might not be too bad. but really, you should be attempting to bring them down to 1200 max, and even that's a bit high.
good luck getting it finished by sunday.

Depends on what you are aiming for mate - if you are making something to be visually stunning that is gonna suck for multiplayer regardless of polycounts (eg. my flatshaded map) then 1400 sounds ok, but if you want something to be playable on most people's computers then keep them below 1000 odd. Good luck in the contest

HL2 will most likely the game this site centres around, but we are
TRYING to make it more generic and accomodate other games. As the site
owner (Leperous) seems to be drawn toward Doom 3 mapping, we will no
doubt see decent site support for that too.

there must be lots of people around, probably like myself, who think they are decent enough mappers that can jump into the new hl2 or doom3 mapping scene. i think a few of us may be disappointed, and find our level of ability limits us to older, less complicated games, like half-life, or caesar3 even. i know valve have tried to keep a lot of editing stuff similar to what we're used to, but i doubt that it's more than some of the basics.
you can tell that i'm all worked up for this, can't you?

I'm terrified I won't be able to meet the rising standards of the level
design industry, but at the same time I'm eager to get the opportunity
to realise some of the ideas I had that did not fit the engine I'm
currently working in.
EDIT: Actually, I watched the CS:Source video again today, and can
safely say if the engine can make an extremely basic map like that
version of Aztec look pretty tasty, it will be easy enough to pull out
satisfactory visuals.

i just want to be able to build a huge dirt track level for the buggy, with lots of nice terrain generator generated mountains/tunnels. and maybe fill the roads with lots of little alien things that can get splatted. i'll be happy with that.

Fishy has the right idea. This is the first time we'll be able to play
with proper physics and vehicles. I'll certainly be making maps where
you can drive stuff off huge buildings and try to land on a crowd of
people.

I have another question, btw...
To submit a map, all it needs is the .bsp file? Or u want some readme.txt and/or source map?

You don't need to release the source but a readme.txt is generally a standard inclusion, so that people who download your map know who made it. Also, if you use any non-standard wads, either wadinclude them or be sure to provide the wads with the bsp. Same goes for sound files and models

If you want to release your source too, that's ok, people could learn from it. But it's not necessary for the compo, no.
