I will be making a map soon, it will be as close to 1:1 scale as humanly possible with the HL2 engine.
i need close approximations for grid=feet.

Can't you set the scale in the new hammer?
So that 1unit = 1 inch or whatever?

Units still aren't equal to inches. I believe this just can't be
achieved due to the view cone in-game and perhaps several other
factors...

looks downcast
OK, thanx.. thats what i was afraid of.
i will just deal, everyone will just have to accept that its an engine thing if the scale comes out off a bit.

Without intending to unnecesarily boost anyone's hopes, I thought that in the SDK FAW that Valve released before
HL2 even went gold, they said that 1 inch exactly equals 1 unit. To
give a comparison, in HL1 the player entity would have translated to
two feet wide in both the x and y scales, but the entity in the new VHE
doesn't seem to. I could be wrong, but I thought that's what was said
originally...

You can choose between measuring in units, inches, and inches/feet with an option in Hammer - I believe under one of the menus there is a grid option - You can set it there. I can't remember the exact menu, though, and cannot check as I'm not at a hammer-enabled computer.

Looking at the Dev (orange) textures, in Hammer; there is one that marks player height at 72 units. 72 inches = 6 feet... seems pretty accurate to me. Now, having the map feel right, at a normal world scale is another story. If I were you, I would build some prelimenary stuff and see if real-world measurements feel good in the engine. If not, bah.. guestimate?

I'm quite certain I remember them saying that the new grid is 1:1 and that you can set it to whatever scale you want. The only thing is that Gordon is still ridiculously wide, so he might not fit through normally sized doors.

Yes the grid is in inches. If you go to the top menu bar - Map -
Units, you can choose whether the bottom displays it as just the
numers, as inches, or as feet and inches, ie. 5' 4". The 2D views
still show it as just units. But indeed 1 inch = 1 unit.
But finger is right, you should try some test maps to see if exact scale actually looks right.

I just made a map to scale the other week for CSS (Networking project)
and it looks accurate at a 1 unit = 1 inch relationship...but you have
to make areas a bit wider because ol' Gord's a football player and has
shoulders of an ox.

You are making a map that is almost a quarter mile long to within an inch of exact scale?
