There are some nice static meshes in the debris folder that will work just fine.

Another way to do it would be to create a basic shape, like a cube, and manipulate it in to the shape of your hole. Then place it through the wall where you want the hole and carve. Then delete the shape and you should have a hole in its place.

very poor advice.

in over 5 years and several thousand maps, i have never seen one instance where carving was necessary.
use it at your own peril.

No, don't carve, there's absolutely no point in HL2. This question has been asked so would probably turn up if you searched properly, but I remember there being quite a funky hole model in the debris folder, that was originally used on the ground as where antlions come out of but could be quite easily rotated and used as a wall.

Carve=Bad, and dont ask why its still there, beacuse there is no point
to explain. SImply put a hole into the wall, then add brushes
(preferibly triangles) to make the hole less square.

As long as you stick to using cubes. I've seen some people doing this with cylinders. They probably never even heard of microbrushes!

And here I thought all you had to do was carefully clip a bunch of brushes into the desired shape... you know, the same way you make everything else in a level...

Take the wall, clip vertical to get the desired width of the hole and clip horizontal to get the height. Then make solids with 3 or 4 points on the face parallel to the hole, and move and vertex manipulate them into the corners to make the hole look a little rounded. It's surprisingly easy and effective once you get going.

Its a tiny brush that tortures the compilers and raises your r_speeds. You usually get them when you use the carve tool in odd ways (like carving a wall with a cone or carving corners with complicated brushes etc).

Don't carve dadgummit! Actually there are MODELS that sumulate a hole in the wall! You add a prop_static and set world model to the one you want. There are a few in there for plaster walls. and there are some in there for concrete. Other than that you'll have to use a mesh. and if none of the meshes work, you really will just have to clip it. NOT carve it. Every time someone uses the carve tool, god kills a bunny.

so you mean you've SEEN the pre-made walls with holes in them and you don't want them? they're beautiful. a MESH is a texture that when compiled looks like it has depth but it is really just a flat brush. If you've played HL2 to the Nova Prospekt level and you see a big hole in the floor at one point, that's a mesh.

Every time someone uses the carve tool, god kills a bunny.
And an angel loses his wings. Be very careful, it might even be your very own guardian angel.
